How do I edit file type in XPpro?

for example change a *.scn to *.alt (and others)
I don't seem to be able to do this as I could in Win 2000.

Well the safest way to do this is by going and changing a file type using a special program to do it. However if you want to just simply change the file type, then you need to do a few simple steps.

Open up an explorer window (just double click My Computer or something). Then go to "tools" and click "Folder Options." Click on the "view" tab and then look for a check box with the text "Hide extensions for known file types" - uncheck that box.

Then click "ok" and go to the file you want to edit. Just change the file from whatever it is to the new extension.

Ie: "filename.exe" --->rename---> "filename.avi"
