How do I enable trade networks across the ocean?

My crack team of caravels just discovered another continent with Frederick, Ceasar & Genghis Khan. I'd like to start unloading some of my extra resources on them, but the trading screen says they're "Not Connected to the Trade Network".

How do I get them attached to the network so I can trade?

I think you need astronomy...the tech that allows galleons (and ocean trade).

:thanx:

Do the benefits of Astronomy outweigh the effect of obsoleting the Colossus?

how mush can you make from trades vs. coloccus?

Astronomy is always more important than colossus, with the exception of a pangea map or lakes map. The galleon will let you expand your empire to (1) get a bigger empire (more money = more science), and (2) get resources you currently do not have (more happy = bigger cities, more healthy = more efficient cities, more strategic = faster wins)

edited some typos

Astronomy is amazing. The overseas trade routes way outweigh the Colossus. For example, I was Aztecs in 1000ad, and although Astronomy obsoleted the Colossus, since I had a ton of cities and therefore a ton of trade routes, my gpt jumped a ton.

I'm having this problem too, and have had a hard time figuring it out, but I just did.. the answer is Astronomy.

I have 4 rival civs that are overseas and I'm connected to two of them only. I am currently researching astronomy so I thought that wasn't the answer, but it's the fact that 2 of my 4 rivals have researched astronomy, that's why I can trade with them. I can't receive money from trade routes until I have astronomy myself, but we can trade resources.

Also to the guy asking about Colossus, Astronomy should far outweigh colossus because the commerce from Foreign trade routes will provide a HUGE boost to your economy, especially with a customs house (+100% foreign trade) - this is assuming most of your rivals are overseas. If you're already getting ample trade from rivals who are not overseas it may not be worth it. Generally though, Astronomy is a big game changer for the boost to your commerce, most especially if you don't have foreign routes prior to.

Now this will get interesting, jerVL/kg is still active in these forums iirc., will he find anything unusual about getting an answer in a thread he opened 7y ago and by that strengthen the anti-necro people or will he just say thanks again and herald the new age of daily necroing?

Stay tuned, because the answer to this will come in the next episode of this thread, which is in 2020!

:joke:

On the other hand why not resurrect an old thread instead of starting a new thread on exactly the same topic?

That's what Tachywaxon said yesterday or the day before but it doesn't fit to my post, because I didn't take sides but simply had some fun ;) .

Hmm, I don't remember ever asking this question. Guess we were all n00bs at some point.

The irony is, I still delay Astro whenever I build the Colossus...forgetting, of course, how much more valuable the foreign trade routes are!

But is the Colossus worth being built in the first place?

Let's see... 125 Hammers for a non industrious leader. (let's assume copper won't we?)
Now you must work 125 coastal tiles.turns before you get something in return.

Beh...

125 coastal tiles is not much soundjata, that's a size 5 island-city that has only coastal tiles for 25 turns. If it were i. e. 3 island-cities (i. e. for intercontinental traderoutes) that were size 7 it would i. e. only be 6T before the colossus had payed back the invested :hammers: in :commerce: and Great Merchant :gp: are also quite valuable.

i replied to help out others who are looking for the answer.. i even registered for the forum to do so.. yes, i noticed it was 7 years old, but wasn't replying for "lively discussion"

i googled the question, and this thread shows up, there was no definitive answer anywhere else, so i was simply assisting others in the same position - TYVM :D

i think colossus is one of the most pivotal wonders, granted that you have at least a handful of coastal cities, as a stifled economy is the biggest hurdle to expansion/research progression, and it helps out tremendously

@TripleB:
As soundjata already suggested, there are always payback times for wonders you build. (Although I'd add the cost of the Forge to the equation as well, in this case.) There is also an opportunity cost associated with it: maybe you'd be better off building two triremes or a settler or whatever in a certain situation instead of rushing the Colossus.

There's an additional problem to keep in mind associated with the Colossus: to make it pay you need to work coastal tiles. Now if you have lots of seafood this is generally no issue. If you have poor land and would grow on coastal tiles anyway and mostly use the whip, again, the Colossus will be effective. But for how long?

On water maps you'd generally want MC reasonably fast and Astronomy as fast as possible (for mobility and TRs), meaning your Colossus will have a very limited lifetime. Hence on water maps TGL would (generally) be a better option. Available at Sailing which you'd want fast, obsolete with Corporations which you can avoid for a long time if need be, and you have to do absolutely nothing to make it pay except for settling / conquering coastal cities which you'd do anyway. Now again, on a pangea type map where a lightning fast Astronomy isn't required, but most of your commerce comes from the sea, because your land isn't worth cottaging, this might not hold true. But those starts aren't necessarily the norm.

I just figured out the answer to this one a couple of days ago. I was stuck on a small continent, steadily losing money, and all of a sudden I'm getting +93 gold per turn.

The spanner in the works in terms of international trade routes is that the AIs have a really bad habit to change to Mercantilism, which kills trade. Equally annoying every time. Before and after that happens, though, Astronomy is strong.

Rejoice!! The new episode is here!

Seems like jerV hasn't blessed us with his or her presence for almost three years. Perhaps all the local sheep have bee nuked. However, Astronomy is still good. Yay! :D
