How do I escort units?

I can't figure out how to escort units. This is what I did; I selected a swordsman, then clicked on the escort unit icon and when I place the cursor over the unit I want (a settler) the area turns green. Clicking on the unit doesn't do anything however. I tried being on the same tile as the settler but it still doesn't do anything.

I've never been able to figure it out so I just use the grouping selection (shift-select to add a unit to the group or to remove a unit that is already in the group.) I've never quite understood why anything else was necessary in the first place.

Well, color me chagrinned. I never even thought of that...

Just make sure you use a unit with 2 movement or else your settler will be slowed down so to keep pace with the 1 movement unit.
