How do I get enemies to respect my borders

I am playing regent and the Indians and Japanese are entering into my borders EVERY turn. I ask them to leave or declare war and then they leave but they keep coming in.

Also, how can I tell which patch I have?

Build up your military. After you have a stronger military than they do, they should respect you mor.

Look down in the lower left corner of the main menu screen for version.

Realistically though? You don't try, you be a pushover. But that has its advantages since you always know when their attackers are out of their homeland...

Please.

This has been an ongoing problem and complaint since the game came out.

Settler Diarrhea is part of this problem where they keep marching in, won't leave, and finally teleports themselves to open tiles on the other side of my civ, tiles they should not know exist. The AI is so dumb it doesn't even know these crappy towns can't be defended in war.

Maybe a larger military helps. It didn't a few patches ago.

This is second only to Culture Flipping, and ahead of lame naval warfare, on my list of complaints.

Borders muct be respected, if for no other reason to END THE TEDIUM of telling them to get out over and over.

his drives me crazy - they march in and wont leave until you have told them 3 times to go.....T

Options:

1.Build a wall of cheap units to block them (maybe with a some fast units like horsemen to surround them quickly) -

2.Sign a ROP with them for lots of gold /tech - at least you get some profit out of them as they would do it anyway.

3.Attack and kill them

4.I find workers do it all the time if the civ in question has a city on the other side of my territory - in which case I leave them to it - yes I know it is probably not wise to but I can't be bothered to keep asking them to leave.

keep a number of fast units avaialabe to act as blockers and when the ai crosses your borders set them up so that the AI cannot move the violating units forward.

Some interesting AI responses:

Joan d'Arc: "In the interest of peace, I will remove them." But she doesn't.

Mao: "Hmmph, we were just leaving, anyhow." But they don't.

Bismarck: "You blustering fool, you don't know what you're doing. We'll leave now, but we'll be back." This one you can count on.

give'em a good smack, literally.

like the chinese proverb brutally and shamelessly translated:
kill the chicken to warn the monkey.

build a bunch of your best fastest offensive unit, pick one of the 2 offending civ that you can defeat, and wipe them off the map. It'll make the other civ behave. At least for a while. During that while move your military units to near the border of the other civ and they usually will respect your border.

Of course the other course of action is don't leave any holes that they can stick a settler at. Since 1.21f patch I think the AI will only build cities 1 square away from your cultural border. So if you space your cities 4 squares apart everywhere the AI should have no room to stick a city in the middle of your empire.

You can pay them to attack a civ that is opposite of their direction to yours. That will keep their troops occupied for a while.

Let them built a few city( with only 1 or 2 defender) then declare war( without being into their teritory) rze or capture their city, then contact them for peace treaty and ask for gold per turn. It is quick and you can easily do it while in republic. Short war, short strike, big income.

I had a game recently where I had the same problem. The Indians were constantly entering my territory. I noticed, however,. that they always used the same route. When I put a worker in their way, not a military unit, they stopped the incursions totally. Really strange. Has anyone else had experience of this sort.

In the past I've used military units and they would just come a different way.

Well I think when you blocked their route , AI calculated second nearest route and it was not threw your territory anymore :)

The AI doesn't retreat non-military units (settlers, workers, explorers). You don't have to either. Although, it are units, so the program gives you (and the AI) the option to ask them to leave. Pretty stupid.
In my current game, the persians used my land as parking lot at first, but now my military is (finally) larger than theirs, they don't even come close.

Knowing the reason for them to keep coming back will help you to prevent them from coming back. For example: Is there unclaimed land on the other side that they want to build? Are they at war with another civ and they need passage through your empire? Are they preparing to invade you? If you figure out what they want, you could use that to your advantage.

Three basic answers to this problem

1. Guard your borders- Troops on your borders are a good deterrent to civ's encroaching on your borders
2. Put up with it- Appeasement may be the best strategy, esp. if your civ is inferior
3. declare war- Nothing says get out like a good ol' declaration of war, if ya do it right you should be able to get rid of the offending civ once & for all.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this will only work if you have more territory than they do. If they own more, i think you are the one that has to pay.

That makes explorers even more useful than I thought, since now I know I can keep them in their territory as long as I want without them getting mad.:)
My military is stronger than other Civs, yet they still always send workers into my land. I just deal with it, because the first time it happened I told the civ to go away, and then they declared war on me, and I didn't want to fight a war. It doesn't really bother me though, since all the workers do is go back and forth like idiots.

Kill them and they won't send units in your territory.

If you can't kill them, just put up with it.
