How do I get Modbuddy?

Hi,

I would like to start modding, but I can't even get Modbuddy - this isn't covered in the Modders Guide.

I am told to go onto Steam -> Steam Client -> Library -> Tools -> Sid Meier's Civilization V SDK. I can find the library, but there is no tools option.

I have also been told to download Windows Powershell in order to run Modbuddy, which I have done.

I eventually typed "Sid Meier's Civilization V SDK download" into Google and found a download, and it says it has fully downloaded, but it won't go any further than that - I can't actually open it! I restarted the PC, and still can't open it.

What am I doing wrong.

Please can someone write a step by step guide on how to get Modbuddy, how to open it - thats what we need before we can even start with the Modders Guide!

Thanks.

Open steam, goto Library...now just under where it says LIBRARY you will see Installed, Click this and it will give u a drop down menu, scroll down too Tools, click it and u will get a list in alphabetical order. The SDK will be listed there.

Thanks Horem!

I've downloaded it - now I opened it and clicked on Nexus - it wants me to put in the Base Path.... what should this be?

It wants the Installation folder of Civ5 and the Userdata paph.

Installation path is "Steam/Steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization V"

Userdata path is "My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization V"

Right I open Sid Meier's SDK and try to click on Modbuddy - it says "Invalid license data. Reinstall is required." - is this because I tried to download from a site when I searched in Google? I have deleted those downloads now because they didn't open anyway. How can the installation from Steam be an invalid license? Isn't it free?

Also Having trouble with Nexus - I typed in the wrong asset path the first time, then corrected it, but now I think it is stuck on the first path!

Should I try to uninstall the SDK and then re-install it or is this gonna be complicated?

I get the license warning if I try to start ModBuddy from the "4 tools sdk menu". Try running ModBuddy directly, it's "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\sid meier's civilization v sdk\ModBuddy\ModBuddy.exe"

I went all the way through and have Modbuddy.exe.config - If I click on that it says it can't run it - now I've been directed here - Moderator Action: *snip* - I guess I'm gonna download it.... all this data is costing me a fortune here at the South of Africa!

Not modbuddy.exe.config but modbuddy.exe

(and that link is a crappy advertising tool that does nothing useful)

If you have "Hide extensions for known filetypes" checked in Explorer's options it will just show as ModBuddy (the icon is a capital V with three gears in it)

Yes I have "Hide Extensions.." So I clicked on ModBuddy with the icon and it still comes up with a picture of (Stone Henge?) but on top of that says "Invalid license data. Reinstall is required." Same as if I click on the ModBuddy shortcut then on ModBuddy in the window that opens.

ModBuddy with the icon is the correct link (it's a henge, but not Stone Henge ;-) ) and if that's giving the License dialog then I don't know off-hand what to suggest. But I wouldn't download anything that hasn't come from the Microsoft website(s)

ModBuddy is built on top of the VC++ Redistributable Shell, so you may need to grab an official copy of that (there is a free version) - the bad news is it's 165Mb so you may want to wait for someone else to confirm that's the correct version!

Edit: According to my installed software, its the VS 2010 Isolated Shell that ModBuddy uses - http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=1366

Please report such stuff the next time, so that we can remove these links :) (which I just did). Because in the worse cases it does not only do nothing useful, but might even be malware.

Thanks for the link whoward, but after 3 hours of downloading... it failed to install Shell (Isolated) - all the other components installed, but it said -

"Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Licenses\9E...... Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."

Then -

"The following component failed to install: Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Shell (Isolated) - ENU"

I tried to Open ModBuddy again, and it gave the same problem as before. Evidently I have to get a license for something??

Am I supposed to go to the computer store and buy Shell (Isolated)?? Thought it was supposed to be free??

Okay - I tried Googling - and found a site saying that I have to download Visual Studio service pack 1 before I can get Shell (Isolated) - I tried to download that, but it told me I need a licensed version of Visual Studio 2010. So In other words I have to go to the store and purchase Visual Studio before I can do anything else....

I could always ask someone else to make the mods for me.... but I would like to do it myself and experiment. Also I would like to do the art work myself....

No, you need to solve the problem it told you about, namely

Code:
"Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Licenses\9E... ... Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."

You are either not logged in as an admin or running the install with admin privileges

Sorry I'm stupid - Admin for what? My computer? I clicked on the link that you posted - http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/downl...s.aspx?id=1366 and downloaded, then during installation it got through the first 2.5 items and told me to restart the computer, which I did, Sell (Isolated) was the 4th? (out of 7?) item(s) on the list to be installed - after restarting, it installed all the other items, but not Shell (Isolated).

How do I "Verify that you have sufficient access to that key"?:crazyeye:

Okay - So I have set the license in question to my PC's Admin using regedit. Then two other licenses appeared in regedit, but I ignored them. Tried to run Modbuddy - it said "Invalid license data. Reinstall is required." So I uninstalled and reinstalled Civ 5 SDK. "Invalid license data. Reinstall is required." So I tried to download Microsoft Power Shell (Isolated) from a different link, but it took 3 hours, and cut out at 157 megs (out of 168?). So I gave up for a while. Then I got access to faster internet and downloaded a newer version - 2012 version of Microsoft Power Shell (Isolated). Tried Modbuddy - "Invalid license data. Reinstall is required." So I went back into regedit and now there were a total of 4 licenses - of which only one was set to my PC's Admin. So I set the other 3 licenses to my PC's Admin... "Invalid license data. Reinstall is required."
