How do I launch a multiplayer game?

I tried to run the game on a local grid, but I get thrown out of the game. Help me in any way you can!

I don't know about the Steam version I'm afraid. For the disc or GoG version you will get an error message but it will still let you play a LAN game despite the error message. I have never been thrown out of a multiplayer game. The way you can test things is set up a LAN game with just you and the computer.
