How do I trade with other continents?

Greetings all!

Completely new to Civ so I'm still loosing spectacularly but having a lot of fun in the process (which is very weird for me). I refuse to lower the difficulty leverl from "Warlord" though.

Anyways, the questions:

1.) How do I trade with other continents?

After wiping out Japan from the continent we shared I sent out caravels to meet and greet other civilizations. I found them, sure enough, and opened borders left, right and center. Now, in me previous (failed) games I establish routes by connecting my roads to the other Civ's roads, but how do I do that over water?

2.) Why does only one of my own cities appear as a trade route in my capital's city screen?

I have them all connected to each other in a very nice network I used to move troops around in the middle ages.

God, I can't believe how much I like this game. And I haven't won once!!

I belive a harbor will allow you to trade over ocean squares. Not sure if they need a harbor too.

Heheheh. I do sound like Milhouse. Anywaaays...

Anybody else know how to trade accross oceans?

With the right tech, Sailing I think, Coastal squares act like roads (so you don't need a harbor just a city by the sea)

With another tech you can trade across ocean squares

Astronomy is the tech you need to trade over ocean squares.



harbors have nothing to do with allowing trade--they give you a 50% trade yield in cities

I think each city starts with 1 possible trade route...and later techs/buildings/wonders allow more and more as you attain them. For example the great lighthouse gives +1 or +2 trade routes per city on the coast (I think, im at work and can't check)

All you need is sailing (which lets your costal cities tyo conect to others if they are along a coast) and astronomy (which lets them connect over ocean).
If you get those techs you should be able to link up cities on other continents but if it is for another civ then you need to know them
