Well i have been reading a bit through this forum, and found some great work, now oddly i could not find any information on how you install those things (where the files are supposed to go etc) and use them right. Find this should be a sticky threat as its not that obivous like many here seem to think.

I download a earth map where it said i should put it into the world builder folder, now i could only get into this game by double clicking on that map, (like you can in Unreal Tournament games) yet i find it a bit odd that there isnt a way that you start the game and then can choose the map, or is that really the feature of Civ4??

So how are things installed probably?

Thanks

Have a look at your folder directories in Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4...

You will find a number of folders there that you can install your mods in.

For World Builder Saves you want \Saves\WorldBuilder

For custom mods you want to either put them in your CustomAssets folder in the proper directories, or place an entire mod with it's own Assets folder in your Mods folder. Most of the time the modder will specify which folders to place the given mod in. My suggestion is to never ever overwrite the files in the original Assets folder.

"For World Builder Saves you want \Saves\WorldBuilder"

So i am supposed to go to load a game and choosen then there the map? As i did that but as i said in my example, the map didnt showed up in the game.

If it's a World Builder save you go into "Load a Scenario" to load it within the game. If it's a regular save you put it in the single player saves folder and load it from the load screen. The "Load a Custom Map" option is for customizing the random maps, not for World Builder maps.

every time i try to download a map it saves it but when i load the game it is no where to be see! what is going on???

Do you mean that you are just downloading the map and then loading the game? You have to install it first. You have to move it into your Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword*\PublicMaps or Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword*\PrivateMaps directory.

*If it's for BTS.

I think the problem Chayton is having here is pretty common...among non-mod makers/users. They are unfamiliar with the folders/files for a game and what they do. I am fairly adept at dealing with mods for the Rainbow Six series but I get lost trying to install mods for CIV 4 series. Part of this is not understanding the structure of the program and part is not being familiar with the jargon used. I'm sure that many of the explanations I see online are quite good, but they suffer from a total lack of ignorance. The poster does not put themselves back in the time when they understood nothing of CIV 4.

Mods would ideally come with instructions for a complete newb, every time. Unfortunately they are often written for experienced users who are already familiar with the process. Giving directions with exact paths would be a great start. (ex. Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword*\PublicMaps) In this instance, however, the helpful user, TCO1, knew the difference between "Public" and "Private" maps directory. The learning user, however, probably does not. So what is needed is a INSTALLING CIV 4 SERIES MODS/MAPS FOR DUMMIES article that would be a "sticky" and would explain it on a level that your grandmother could understand and install a mod with first time. With this generic guide, a newb to CIV 4 mods could make a good guess at what the pathetic/absent instructions that come with many excellent mods intend to be done with the downloaded file.

"For custom mods you want to either put them in your CustomAssets folder in the proper directories, or place an entire mod with it's own Assets folder in your Mods folder. Most of the time the modder will specify which folders to place the given mod in. My suggestion is to never ever overwrite the files in the original Assets folder."

Well spoken, but I can imagine the disaster of a newb messing with Assets folders (muttering "What the heck IS an asset and why does a mod go into an Asset folder?" as he trips happily through the program folders with the sense of safety another newb might have altering the Registry...."and Disaster followed after."

This is not meant to be critical of the help offered here. I merely want to point out how confusing terminology can be. Combined with poor install instructions, the average user on the street is lost. My particular horror show has been trying to figure out how to install Inquisitions into CIV 4 BTS for the RevolutiionsDCM mod. (clearly Charlemagne Mod has them but they are not available on the RevolutionsDCM checklist when doing a Custom Scenario after the Mod is loaded. After futile efforts to find information on that topic, I started googling today for information on installing mods in general. I'm hoping that I may stumble on a Tutorial for making mods that will explain why things go where. This is a lot to ask the average person to do to use the average mod. My roommate would kick in the monitor before he would figure out how to install a mod. Help needs to be aimed at these users on such a basic level.

So guys, if you are going to help, as I know you want to, don't forget to explain what a Private and Public map are, what an Asset Folder is and how the game finds the right one after you make a new one when you " ...place an entire mod with it's own Assets folder in your Mods folder." A basic introduction should explain how to find the game files in C: by listing the entire path. Some users will never have gone in there past the dire warning not to look at hidden files. It may be obvious to you what goes in the BTS folder and what goes in the basic CIV 4 folder but it isn't to most of us...and to some it's just magic. Please take pity on the uninformed and less brilliant users and somebody do what Chayton suggested. MODS FOR DUMMIES. Thanks.

Well said, Yamarion! Having done extensive modding in other games (Morrowind, Oblivion, etc.), I'm pretty confident moving through the folder structure, but there's still quite a learning curve, trying to figure out how the game loads mod/map files with regard to the originals, and how it knows which to load first.

I'm necroing an old thread because I have the exact same problem. I am trying to install next_fantasy_war and the install instructions say
To use this mod put it in your \My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\CustomAssets\python\ folder

So I did. Then I went to open a game, and I couldn't figure out how. I clicked on advanced>load a mod... but the only options there were to load the existing mods that came bundled with the game. Then I thought maybe the readme was outdated so I tried putting the mod in \My Documents\My Games\Beyond The Sword\CustomAssets\python\ folder, but that didnt work either
Then I looked around in the folders for a BTS mod launcher, couldnt find one. Now, if I have used any mods before I could propably figure it out on my own but this is my first Civ IV mod and I am not even sure if I have installed it properly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Particularly an explanation of what to do after you put the mod in the folder.

Incidentally, I am not a modding noob either but I am a noob when it comes to modding Civ IV

Custom assets are automatically loaded, so whatever you put in there is loaded every time you start civ4. Also I'm pretty sure Next Fanatasy War is a BtS mod, and it seems odd it would only have python. I'm sure that's not right. Anyway you're better off getting advice in that mod's forum/thread, as anyone who hasn't used that mod has no clue about it, and wol't be very useful in debugging it.

I'm new to the modding world as well, and I have been trying to download and install several mods in order to see the finished products I need to be working towards. I have installed WinZip and when I download the file, this is usually what happens:
1. I direct WinZip to unzip in the path ...BeyondtheSword/mods
2. WinZip gives me an error message saying that I cannot do that
3. I unzip it into my documents (which it does let me do...) and the copy and paste the unzipped file into the previously mentioned directory
4. Everything seems cool, the mod is in its own folder with all the things that were downloaded with it inside
5. I open up Civ, ready to play a cool new mod
6. I go to 'Advanced' and click 'Load a Mod'
7. The name of the mod shows up as a loadable mod. I click on it
8. Civ restarts, shows the first screen that says 'Loading...', etc.
9. Civ crashes.

Whenever it does this, the actually loading bar never comes up. It crashes right when the bar would normally pop up.

Any help from a seasoned modder would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance guys!!

Are you installing the mod to:

"My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\MODS"

Or are you installing to:

"Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods"?

If the latter, there should be other mod folders (like Final Frontier, Afterworld, The Road to War).

You should be installing to the latter. (The path might not match, but it should be under Program Files).

Yeah I'm putting it into the second one. I can see all of the other mods in there.

Is there something wrong with my comp?

Download a mod that uses an installer, that way you don't need to worry about it.

Planetfall, Fall from Heaven, Legends of Revolution, History of the Three Kingdoms, Dune Wars, Mars Now: These are all popular mods that use an installer.

I've tried several mods (as in about 20...) Some of them may have been old, but the majority of them specifically said 'For BTS 3.19'.

I've actually been able to download (through the installer) and play Fall From Heaven 2 and it ran without a problem. Had a lot of fun with it, that's one of the reasons I wanted to check out some new mods. Thanks for the list of installer enabled mods though, I'll be sure to check them out.

If you can play the most recent version of FfH2 (0.42, or so), then your civ installation is up to date and should not produce any problems.

So, there's another reason for your problems.
Maybe windows issues, maybe hardware issues.
One example: How old is your hard drive?
Mine is pretty old, and sometimes when i install mods they'll just crash because they've been installed in a broken part of the hard drive.

With what you said I've come up with a hypothesis. I've running Windows Vista, and I've read that Vista does some odd things to Civ... Could it be as simple as that??

And my hard drive is under 2 years old. Never had any problems from it before. Additionally I've tried installing it on both my laptop and the family's desktop. Mods don't work on either.
