How do people play Civ 4 multiplayer? I can't get it to work :(

Almost every game I join have a bad peer. It has always been like this and my firewall is correctly configured.

How do people play multiplayer? Is there another more stable system or do everyone just try and fail until they get in the lobby?

What do you mean by "correctly configured", giving Civ4 permissions is not always enough, on many firewalls and routers you will need to directly open UDP Port 2056 to get Civ to work right.
