How do you change starting positions in the World Editor?

does Team number or starting number matter? like when you start the game your always in slot number 1 right..try changing that?

*edit* oops..you trying to change it from WE...nevermind..i haven't had a chance to check out the World Editor yet..

You can change starting postions in WB. but there are some weird AI issues. I did this with the base map in Dales Mod, still trying to fix it.

if you want to look at it.

You need AoDII.

The problem I'm having is that you can change the starting position, but the Pirates freeze in place and most of the other civs either disappear after a few turns or just cruise around the map exploring and not building cities.

Do you change the starting positions by just deleting the units and replacing them with new ones at different locations?

(Because if so - then the starting position in earnest isn't changed. Any new ship you buy in Europe at a later point comes up at the point where your ship originated.)

The reason I am asking is that I'm trying to locate where the game predefines the location your ship actually pops up, but having no luck so far. Perhaps, if this delete-and-readd units style is not what you're doing I could get some insights here. :)

Caledorn,

I opened the WBsave and changed the starting positions. I just can't understand why the civs are doing what they are doing? I even made a version with one city each at start, it helped, but didn't always fix the problems. I then added an extra ship to the some of the problem civs... the pirates stayed frozen, and the civs who ships disappeared now had two ships.

I still like the starting city idea.

Can you post your map with starting cities? Did you list an x,y coodinate starting location in the team description or place the cites in the actual map plot? I tried it on the AOE II "colonisation" map with no results. I used the same syntax as in Civ4 WBSave and can't spot any typos.

I had to go ahead and open the World Builder on the first turn (before moving) and create a starting city for each European civ and place a ship next to it then saved it (renamed) in my public maps folder. For some reason if I just moved the ships to quasi historical starting locations and left them to found cites on their own you get a bug where if you ever buy any more ships you can't get them to sail from Europe. I would attach my WBS file but for some reason when I tried to upload it I get logged off as a member.??

This AI bug will be fixed in the next Snoopy/Dale patch. The AI will function correctly and settle in user-made custom scenarios. :)

One thing to note:

If you change the positions on the map by deleting the existing ones, and placing them elsewhere, be sure to go into the reveal tile mode and clear for all civs. It is an easily overlooked step.

Also, I noticed that when moving, you can't specify the starting units the way they are in the game. In other words, if you examine the units, you will notice that most are colonists with designations as soldier or pioneer. You can't change that when adding specific colonists and you must put in Hardy Pioneer and Veteran Soldiers from the get go. Not too big a deal, but you just can't get them exactly as the game defines (unless you go in and edit the xml, probably)!
