Before this game, I had no clue what it means to have REAL :yuck:.

Small Shuffled map with a Random Civ & Leader on Prince difficulty resulted in me starting with what you see here ... an Indian Settler standing right in the middle of 12 Floodplains.

I enjoy maps that make me scratch my head, and this was one of the better ones for me. Until this game, I had never truly dealt with :yuck:, and I found it quite intriguing.

For anybody with nothing better to do or with the desire to start with a city already at its :health: cap, here it is ...

NOTE: The following 'spoiler' probably belongs more in "Stories & Tales" than anything else, but w/e ... it's a recap of my exploits.

Spoiler :

Session 1.

I hate to admit it, but I screwed this up bad the first time around. I focused so much on getting Delhi healthy that I failed to secure any decent real estate around me and fell all too quickly behind in the tech race.

Roosevelt came from the west.

Wang Kon came from the south.

Cyrus came from the east.

I was boxed in before I even had a Settler out the gate.

Session 2.

Realizing everything I've read is actually true about getting at least a 2nd good city up before really focusing on the Capital, I changed my focus towards getting a city planted somewhere for session 2.

2200 BC

I prioritized Animal Husbandry for the +1 :health: and the all-around goodness of 3 :food: & 3 :hammers:, so I noticed straight away Cyrus had Horses in his Capital's fat cross :( .

Expecting an early war against Cyrus' Immortals, I founded Buddhism and build Bombay south, closer to Korea.

1760 BC

Seeing Copper to the east, I couldn't help but plop Madras next to it to fuel the Spearmen I still thought I'd need against Cyrus.

900 BC

Knowing I was behind in tech, I simultaneously finished Stonehenge and The Oracle -- picking up Metal Casting to fuel my soon-to-be endless onslaught of the countryside and for trade with Cyrus, who will very soon convert to Buddhism with me.

325 AD

Roosevelt completes The Pyramids ... my first victim is decided.

600 AD - 1050 AD

New York, Boston & Washington fall easily to my horde of Catapults and Axemen (no Iron). Atlanta is burned to the ground, thus capping my War Weariness and dwindling my military might for now.

1260 AD, 1460 AD

Roosevelt becomes a Vassal State of Wang Kon. Shortly thereafter, Philadelphia and Chicago's borders throw Washington into rebellion. Fearing the loss of The Pyramids, war is on the horizon once more.

Obviously, Philadelphia and Chicago are the first on the list, which leaves Roosevelt behind Shaka's lines with a single city captured years ago from the Barbarians.

1490 AD, 1590 AD

I am the first to found Liberalism. Picking up Constitution for free, I am also the first to found Democracy. Instead of using this monopoly to take off even further in tech, I use Emancipation's unhappiness to 'balance out' my War Weariness.

1600 AD

Using my entire empire's produciton to bang the drums of war I struck deep into Korean territory and took the pride of his nation -- the Capital, Seoul.

1800 AD

In his final desperation, Wang Kon falls at the feet of the Zulu Nation and becomes their Vassal.

This is a foolish mistake on Shaka's part and damns the world into oblivion. Up until that moment, both Shaka and Cyrus were quite Pleased with me. I was certain I'd win a diplomatic victory through bribery and religion.

Oh well.

1802 AD - 1914 AD

Following the destruction of Korea, there was nothing Shaka and Roosevelt could do but watch as all of the great Indian empire fell down upon them with a seemingly endless supply of Cannons and Grenadiers.

1926 AD

By this time, the Persians have nearly 6 technologies on me. Too bad none of them counted. I held the one technology Cyrus so desperately needed -- the one technology which may have saved his soul ... Assembly Line.

1935 AD -- Otaku Wins a Domination Victory!!!!

Led by Jeanne d'Arc (an Infantry unit with a 51-strength attack versus garrisoned gunpowder units), the world finally succumbed to my overwhelming influence.

This marks the very first game in which I have been at peace a mere fraction of its span -- peace lasting just long enough to resupply the front lines and continue the barrage.

Are you kidding? With that many flood plains, you absolutely need the fresh water bonus if you want any chance of getting out of :yuck:.

I would have moved the settler 2S. Plains hill for the extra hammer. You still have 6 floodplains, which is still more than you really need (especially with a Cow), but less unhealthiness. And you can put a second city to the north with several floodplains of its own.

peace,
lilnev

Bhruic, what unheathiness do? Takes away 1F. In a situation like this one, I don't think that would be a big problem. If only unhapiness were so easy to discard...

lilnev, 2S would not be a bad idea... nice catch

Uh, no, having -1 unhealthiness takes away 1F. Having -3 unhealthiness takes away 3F. Which is what you'd have if you moved 1W. Which would mean that right from the start, you'd have 0F overall, or no growth, even if working a floodplain square. I don't know about you, but having a 0F starting city doesn't really appeal to me that much.

Damn, dood ... nice eye.

I'd've still gotten hella Floodplains, a lot less :yuck:, and an extra :hammers: to boot (I had a few early production problems this woulda solved.)

Very nice ... that makes me wanna play it again just to see how different the start would be.

That many floodplains makes for either 2 or 3 phenominal cities or 1 worthless city. Take your pick. :p

Did you save this start?

Yeah, I started a game awhile back playing in a similar situation. I got absolutely crushed. I couldn't get any real production, couldn't get a settler out timely, got pinched by whomever. Had massive health problems. It looked wonderful but it was really rough.

Lots of floodplains killing your first city? The standard solution is to move the settler and split the floodplains up between two cities (if the surrounding terrain allows it. you can get three awesome early cities).

edit- Sounds like other posters have already brought this up so I'll just reiterate what others said.

Someone mentioned it before split up flood plains between cities.

A 12 size city working all flood plains you won't feel the pinch as you gain 1 food for every flood plain and -1 health/food every 3 flood plains . So unhealthy is nothing to worry at high pop levels. However it kills your growth at lower city size..

I'm playing a shadow game of this, using the 2S starting position. There still are lots of health problems in the capital, because of the jungles and the AI are boxing me real fast. Done a war with washington for Rice + Crabs (normally i do fight for other reasons, but....)

I can't play more until tomorrow, so I leave here what I already done

What improvement did you build on the flood plains?

In the beginning? I didn't!

Population 1

5:health: = 5:yuck: = +3F

Built a Worker & Pastured the Cows

w/ Cows = 6:health: > 5:yuck: = +3F + 3H (7 to Settler)

Mined the Grassland Hill just south of Cows.

Built a Warrior ... popped a Scout from the north hut.

Population 2

6:health: < 6:yuck: = +2F +6H (9 to Settler)

(vs. on Floodplains Farm: +4F +3H (8 to Settler) )

Built 2 Settlers in succession.

Built a ton of Workers in succession.

Farmed 4 Floodplains, Cottaged another and grew to Population 6

That's basically how I started the game. It wasn't until after I had scouted out 2 good, healthy high-production locations to the south and to the east and settled them that I let my capital begin growing.

At population 6, I worked 3 Farmed Floodplains to feed 2 Scientists and put a starving worker on a Cottage while waiting for the :whipped: or a +:health: bonus, which put me at -1F I think @ 6 Population.

This allowed my 2 extra cities to focus on military production, since I knew I'd be going to war early over :health: resources. Strange reason to war, eh?

In addition to working the 2 Scientists (thus acting as an early quasi-GP farm) I left the city on constant Worker / Warrior (fodder) / Archer production, since it didn't really matter how quickly they got out.

The rest is history. I killed everyone.
