How Do You Properly Add A New Tech?

I added an "Aluminum" Tech in the Industrial Age after Steel - giving Aluminum here instead of getting it in the Rocketry Tech in the Modern Age - I did this because I made WW1 aircraft just need Flight - while all other aircraft need aluminum as well. It makes it interesting - are you gonna go for tanks or WW2 aircraft? Plus, I find it more realistic then the ol' WW2 aircraft lumped in with the Helicopter in Advanced Flight. But unfortunately when I did this it threw my whole tech Age thing out of whack - during gameplay, I'll be able to aquire techs that aren't available in the current Age, plus when I do advance an Age I'll be missing a Tech or two required to advance! What's up with that?!?!?! How did I screw that up? It seemed so straightforward while programming it? Oh and by the way, it would be real nice if the Civ Edit Tech tree was user friendly and would adapt to added Techs with required branches - I still haven't figured how to alter that yet...:(

This tutorial should help you with the Advisor Screen

As for adding techs what did you do? You shouldn't be able to aquire techs from the next age until you have aquired all required techs from the current age. The game just won't advance to the next age, or at least its not supposed to. :S As for missing techs required to advance, I am guessing that those techs you missed are not marked as required. I would be able to answer you better if you posted a screen shot of your advisor screens.

Here's the deal - I'm in the Ancient Era - I'm working on The Republic but I was able to acquire Feudalism from the Medieval Era...?

^Sorry, I'm somewhat new to this website and have no idea how to attach the picture to this post - I tried but it said it was too big...

^Just as a note - I did not aquire this Tech from another Civilization - I was able to go ahead and choose it. It's weird, but after playing a few times this only seems to happen in the Ancient/Medieval period...

Since the Republic is set to not be a required tech for era advancement you can move into the next era without having finished researching it. You can tell its not required by the slashed circle at the upper right hand corner.
