How do you stop civs from dying so quick?

Is there a manual change I can make in an XML file that will prevent 2-3 civilizations from dying within the first 100 turns?

I'm guessing its because of some rampant griffon eating them. Is there an animal invasion setting I can alter? Any other ideas?

I keep restarting games because I really don't feel like being a 'builder' all the time and enjoy having other civs around me to battle

It's the barbs that spawn. In the next patch I believe a certain amount of turns will have to pass before they can show up.

I had the same problem like you and wanted to see the cause of it which was the 6/4 minotaurs with crazed which gives ebraged and that one gave them 60% strength and 1 extra movement so I wento to assets-xml-basic infos (or something similar)-UnitInfos (clikced ctrl+f) found the lesser minotaur and removed the crazed promotion and gave them ANIMAL_AI (they won't enter borders).Maybe I overdid it but my rival civs and me can now actually survive.Maybe I should change the AI back but crazed is definetly too much.

Fairly easy to fix this. Go into unit info XML file, seach minotaur, delete minotaur the lesser (it says this in the green writing). This will get rid of the barb spawning ones only, not the ones that the Shiem and demons get. It will probably cause an XML error on start, but it doesn't do anything, if you hit OK the game will proceed as normal.

Next patch they will be a 4/4 rather than a 6/4. Not sure a delay is necessary as well...but me and Valk will hammer that out. :)

go to WB and rebuild their city and place an archer or two

Where would I find the improvementinfos.xml?

Nevermind.

Nice so I have now 2 changes in my moddirectory that are planed for the next patch :) (except that I instead of removing crazed I replaced it with withered)

Another thing that is entirely unfortuneate, but possible. When playing with the extra nodes, Lich can spawn on top of death mana. If it's near a starting civ. Bye-Bye!!
Even if it survives the first turn, the Lich can summon more skeletons again next turn.

I've both seen it happen and had it happen to me.

I once had a 800 xp unit because of that. It was fun though. Easy way to train lots of units with little risk.

Yeah.... The Lich is the only guardian who is still held; Others are leashed, able to patrol their Mana.

It's not just the minotaurs (although they do contribute a lot); it's the fact that tier 4 animals tend to spawn at really inopportune times, and they seem to be able to attack cities regardless of whether "Animal Invasion" is on or not. I've seen games where every other civ got steamrolled by a Griffin Pack, and I barely held on long enough to get a pacifist Conquest victory.

I'm still not sure how to fix it at the moment, but a rough fix would be to add an "Animal Limiter" promotion to all barbarian-owned animals that cuts their City Attack (and maybe City Defense) by something significant. That way they're just as strong as ever in the field (which is where they should be) but can't wipe out a city. I tried 80%, seems to be working well enough.

The other thing that wipes out civs is the easily promoted spiders and other animals have a chance to become a 'pack' after killing a target. Anyone getting a Spider Swarm on turn 97 has pretty much won the game. Those higher level animals need to get tied to a later game tech.

And ....
Spoiler :

... they age from combat :D
