How do you upgrade naval units?

In my current game, I can't upgrade my galleys to caravals. In the description for galleys, it says they are upgradable.

Anyone know how to do this? Do I have to construct a drydock, a harbor, or another city improvement? I didn't have to build a barracks to upgrade land units, but I don't know if I need to build something to upgrade naval units.

Thanks in advance for answers...

I don't think they upgrade to caravels. Not sure, though. The civilopedia is rather bad at explaining things. I'd guess they actually upgrade to galleons, the next cargo ship. Caravels can only carry a single non-combat unit, so they don't really count.

As for place, they just have to be within your cultural borders.

I think they upgrade to galleons, actually. I recall that caravels are more like combat ships and galleys are more like transports. Just make sure the ship is in your cultural borders, you have the tech to build galleons, **and** the money to do so. Naval upgrades are expensive!

Galleys do not upgrade ot Caravels, the upgrade to Galleons.

Caravels are mostly useful for exploration and "stealth" operations. Since they can cross closed boarders without triggering war, they can slip a spy or missionary into your neighbors territory.
