How do you use carriers?

You'd have to search long and hard before finding a worse piece of advice than this.

Geeves, don't ever try this. It's called ROP Rape. Not a good habit to learn.

   I agree with Delphi never exploit the AI, this is a very naughty thing to do and that will only keep a player weak in skill, you´ll also have to fill out an Over-16 declaration, approved by the CFC because this aint for kids ya know :p

When using carriers, you need a screen of subs out at 6 tiles to guard against enemy subs, as nothing will ruin your day like an enemy sub taking out your carrier full of bombers. 180 shields per carrier+100 per bomber x4=580 shields, equivalent to all but Modern Age wonders in total shields. It has happened to me......once.

You should usually be able to use combat settlers to rebase your airplains to, except maybe on an archipelado map. And yes, you can rebase airplains to any city, they do not require an airport.

It really costs way more trouble to to build a carrier, an offensive ship for an escort, and about ten bombers, than just 40 tanks, maybe with several artillery mixed in (about ten should suffice) or a combat settler with a nice amount of airplains. And it should be just as effective.

That's not as fun though. :D

Well, it only works once, and then no one will ever trust you again so it might hurt more in the long run, but if you need to take someone out fast as possible to get yourself out of a tough spot it can work. I did it when I was terribly behind in techs one time and took the great library to boost myself up to the industrial. But I was intending on conquest and treaty breaking and other questionable tactics.

I like to abuse the ai, but keeping up appearances is important to allow better use of them. ;)

There is nothing wrong with ROP rape ... its a valuable tactic and perfectly fair considering the number of times an AI has wandered over a pile of troops, while remaining polite and attacked me.
As for carriers, I dont like using them, its expensive and clumsy. A modern carrier carries 70 plus aircraft, in Civ its 4 ... You need at least 16 bombers to do any real damage which is 4 carriers plus escorts, preferably 5. Given lethal air bombardment in Conquests its a lot of investment to sail out and lose. I prefer to rebase as close to an enemy city as possible, bomb it out and take it for little or no damage, then rebase again. With enough bombers, ie 50 or so you can wipe out an opponent easily and destroy his Destroyer, Battleship Carrier stacks as they approach you. The only time I would consider using carriers is if I cant find a base within bombing range. I'd use a couple of hefty stacks and well defended.

Does anyone know if mobile SAM or Flak would operate from a transport, it would be a good way of defending a carrier stack from air bombardment?

Yes I agree, there is nothing wrong with ROP rape. at harder difficulties, the computer has ridiculous advantages over you, so its stupid not to go all out and throw everything you have at them. its somehow ok for the ai to exploit the human by having research, production, and starting bonuses, but no ok to exploit the ai back?

That's why I alway give myself the "ok" to save/load when attacking a city lol...

It's very useful when you have an enemy near your troops before attacking a city since if you first attack isn't successful you can always load/attack the enemy near a troop then try to attack the city again and kill the spearman/pikeman/whatever
