I've noticed AIs stop wars easily. It is upsetting when AI drugs me into their war, makes peace few turns later and leaves me at the war and enemy refuses to negotiate peace for many tens of turns. Seems diplomacy rules are not even, or there are some hidden game mechanics or just me lack understanding...

You should only join those wars if it will benefit you. For example, if you have a superior army, it will win you diplo points with others, or the enemy is far away and can't hurt you.

Or are you talking about wars started by AP (the everyone declare on X). Well for this one it should not be a concern since the poor victim is probably screwed anyways and unlikely to hurt you too much.

The rules of interaction AI vs AI compared to AI vs human are not symmetrical at all, and they are not intended to be. You can declare at friendly!

Just be very careful about what you drink.
If at a nightclub, never leave your glass out of your sight. If you do, get a new glass.
And never have coffee with a Russian-accent stranger.

Apart from that, it seems to me the AI asking the player to join a war falls broadly into two categories:
  • At the start of the war: usually a genuine offer
  • After a while: usually because the AI wants to pull out of the war (easier to get their opponent to accept peace if they themselves are in a multifront war)
Act accordingly.

I mostly accept join war type requests after a "dogpile" (several AIs vs one) has happened. Then I feel totally safe

Is it real? In the BTS game engine? It might explain why they easily settle war, leaving my alone with a foe.

I haven't delved into the code, so I can't vouch for it.
(Others have, and I remember reading a long time ago some posts here detailing how the AI evaluates its war situation. Probably hard to find it again, but maybe someone has it bookmarked?)

But from my experience as long-time player, and from watching a lot of AI games, it definitely seems true.
