How Does Demon Altar Work?

Im currently playing as the Infernal and just sacrificed a captured ogre onto it but I see no change in research stats. Do I need to sacrifice many before I see a change?

I thought it just gave you beakers, like the special ability of the AV T1 priest unit. If you were looking at Beakers per Turn, you'd see no effect, but if you opened the technologies page and mouse over your current tech, you'd see that you were further along than you had been.

All I know is that all units need to be a certain level(2?)(which means you can't sacrifice slaves or captured workers, which I think is weird but... oh well)

After I posted I looked at the research bar and noticed it move forward a tiny bit after I sacrificed an ogre.
