How does one form an armada?

When joining units together XP is used to decide the outcome. The XP value and the promotions of the unit with the highest XP is what is applied to the newly formed unit. When both units have the same XP the values of the target unit (in the blue hex) are used. If the lesser XP unit has an XP bonus, that is lost.
I'm not sure this is valid anymore - at least the promotion part. When joining units now with different promotions, the combined corps, army, et al. will receive both promotions. In my current game I have a level 3 military alliance, which grants a free promotion. So instead of building an army with 1 promotion, I'll build a single unit and a corps, pick different promotions, then combine them for a 2 promotion army.

Wow, a nice undocumented change... or one I missed. Thank you, will check it out and update accordingly.... and I must say, well found abuse of the situation.

I of course trust you Laurana (although I’m greatly disappointed with your avatar change), so as I ask: how much have you investigated this? please don’t assume I’m doubting you.

Since the early battleship is a fairly common get - could I have a 2 promotion battleship and a 3 promotion battleship and combine them for 5 promotions?

This is really significant. I’m picturing scouts, as they have two very good lines. Subs too I think. Yummy battleships.

edit: Ottoman cheese was fixed? Or can you still spam 2 promotion units?

edit: this makes gorgo more interesting too, no?

Three games and far, far too many hours in the past week.

It probably goes without saying, but only if the promotions on each are different. Any duplicate promotions don't magically add a new promotion. For example, if creating a Fleet and both Battleships have the Bombardment promotion, you'd still only get that one promotion. However, if one has Bombardment and Rolling Barrage, and the other has Line of Battle, Preparatory Fire, & Supply Fleet, then you'd get a fleet with all five promotions.

 Wearing a mask to prevent Covid spread? I changed it way back in March iirc.

Ahaha! That’s why you changed it? That’s funny!

Well, this motivates me to consider playing a game or two.

Hmm, if corps gain the promotions for either one, that's a huge change. I know they fixed up to make sure that when combining, if one of them has a promotion like the Spears of Fionn or Matterhorn, then the corps unit will retain that, or if one was built with a barracks and the other wasn't, they maintain that too. But if land and sea units also double their promotion trees, I have a whole new way to build corps. Being able to combine the ranged units to make sure all corps have both the vs district and vs units lines, and to make sure that my cavalry units have both sides of the promotion lines is a huge change.

Yes, and while it smells unintended, by design it can’t be, right? So maybe they wanted to buff formations, and this was the result.

However, I can’t see the ai using this as efficiently as a player. And as I’ve said before, because the ai is nowhere near as efficient as the player, every new system they add or develop further gives more advantage to the player in a game that already lacks challenge.

So fun to tinker with a bit, but ultimately makes the game less fun once the shine wears off.

BTW, avatar was a cool update, always look for a stylish change from you.
@agonistes avatar with muzzle would not have the same effect with those gnarling teeth missing. Would probably look like the mask was squeezing the eyes out.
