How does the Pressure system work?

I think converting more than 1 city in the region helps. I'm still experimenting with it though.

As near as I can figure, pressure is created by nearby cities that have a majority religion, and the pressure appears to be proportional to the number of followers. It also appears that the Holy City of a religion also creates additional pressure independent of followers.

More than that, we don't know.

Found a post on another site that explained it pretty well. New here and not sure if posting the link will get me banned, so here's the quote.

"Basically, the holy city always exerts pressure for its religion, which causes it to slowly convert to that religion (even if it has no members of that religion currently, due to shenanigans by another religion). Once a religion is adopted by over half the population, that pressure starts to be exerted on cities around it.

There are bonuses that can increase the amount of pressure that is exerted by a city on cities around it.

If there aren't other religions nearby, eventually the religion from the first city will automatically be adopted by cities nearby. If a lot of cities in a certain area share a religion, the pressure on other nearby cities will increase.

It's possible to have a holy city NOT have their own religion as the majority religion if the city happens to be surrounded by several other cities of another religion. If that happens, then without help that religion basically will never spread.

If you have a holy city, then, and all the cities around you are of a different religion, you are going to have to get to work with your prophets and missionaries, and convert nearby cities by hand, because they aren't going to convert themselves. Once you've converted enough that the pressure on those cities is greater by your religion than the surrounding religions, your religion is safe (at least until more cities or enemy prophets or missionaries start to impact your cities).

Depending on your religion, you honestly might not care if it spreads or not. If it's one that grants you extra food or production, you'll get some decent use out of it by just keeping it in your own civ and utilizing the bonus over your neighbors. If you are using other bonuses (bonus gold for additional followers for example) then you'll want to do a little extra work and create some units to spread the good word around."
