How far does a city have to be away to make it a colony?

I searched about but could not find the answer to this question. I realize your new city has to be on a different continent, but is there any specific number of squares that it has to be from your culture to allow your new city to be granted independence ?

I don't think there's a distance limit, but you can't make a colony with just one city: you need two or more.
