The Civ4 patch bugs are a bit absurd in that it's easier to get a pirated version up to 3.19 than a legitimately purchased version. This is apparently made worse by the proliferation of distribution channels, each of which has their own unique and incompatible patches. Having read through the CivFanatics forum for solutions, I realized that a simple, distribution-channel specific thread might be appropriate. I, at least, would have found it helpful.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

In 2011, I purchased the DVD-package of Civ 4 Complete (civ +2, NOT including Colonization!). The packaging is recent, so I don't know why the contents are still copyright 2007 (or un-patched to 3.19), but that is what it is.

The game installed Civ 4 Beyond The Sword (+Vanilla & Warlords) version 313. The default installation directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword.

The in-game patch does not work.

None of the patches downloaded from Firaxis Games work. (http://www.firaxis.com/support/support_detail.php?gameid=16&patch=1) The Firaxis 3.17 patch will start and then respond that the game isn't installed.

2K Games' website does not offer any patches beyond vanilla Civ 4 (not that I found, anyway).

From the Downloads forum on CivFanatics, I downloaded the 3.17 patch and 3.19 patch. These patches worked (and don't appear to have given me malware).

I can now play RFC Europe, which makes jumping through the hoops worthwhile.
