How is score determined?

How does the scoring system work for GOTM? How do you pull it out of the SAV files?

I just finished the Conquest version of GOTM 37. Diety wasn't as bad as I thought.... I still lost though (made it to 810 AD) but got further in the game than I thought that I would have. I have the SAV file from just before the hordes took my last city, but how do you save AFTER you die? I'll submit the pre-dead SAV if that is the one that needs to be submitted.

I made a bad decision about 10 turns before I died.... I'm going to replay it from a previous save just for fun to see how far I can make it. I know I'll lose regardless because anytime you are starting the Middle ages and ALL of your rivals are pushing the Modern Times that's bad  .

I have to say that the game was fun and I learned a lot. The highest level I've played before this is Monarch. The research that I did before starting the game was invaluable to keeping me on life support for that long.

Welcome to the GOTM, Tubby Rower. :)

Hmm, to answer your question on submission of a conquest loss first: you can submit the save of the turn before your loss. There's a dropdown menu on the submission page where you can indicate that its a save from before your conquest loss.

The score is computed automatically using Aesons' Jason formula. It uses the in-game score and other data, like the current date, the difficulty level and map type. It's normalized to give a exceptionally well played game 10000 points, this allows comparisons between different victory types.

{edit: You beat me, Space. That's what happens when you get a phone call midpost, I guess. :) Leaving the rest intact, because I said a few additional things.}

Hiya, Tubby. :) Glad you had fun.

For conquest defeats, you do indeed submit a save from the turn before loss. There's a drop-down box on the submission page where you're asked to choose between turn-before (conquest loss) and turn-after (all other victories and losses) saves. Just choose the appropriate one.

As for exactly how the scoring works, it's based partly on the in-game (Firaxis) score. For losses, I believe the in-game Firaxis score is also your GOTM score. For victories, the end-of-game "early-finish" bonus awarded by Firaxis is removed and replaced with a bonus that is weighted so as to allow earlier victories to score as well as games that are "milked" to 2050 AD. The sum of the base Firaxis score and the weighted end-of-game bonus makes up the "Jason" score, which is what gets reported for GOTM victories.

As for how everything's calculated, well, the staff gurus have developed a couple of nifty utilities that extract score, victory (or loss) condition, and victory (or loss) date from the save file and calculate everything automatically. If you want any details on *that*, you'll have to ask someone who has a clue. :)

Cheers,
Renata

Well I was able to submit it. It calculated my score immediately.

Entry class: conquest
Game status: Conquest Loss
Game date: 810 AD
Firaxis score: 888
Jason score: 521

Looking at previous GOTM results. It looks like I'll have my first award, the "Red Ambulance". Oh well, I hope to do better next time with my increased knowledge of how to play the game.

Renata and A Space Oddity have given you the answers between them. The above is almost correct, but the score that comes out of this process is scaled so that a well played game should score about 10,000, regardless of map size and shape. This allows different games to be compared, and explains why your Firaxis score is more than your Jason score. The scaling factor for this game reduced Firaxis = 888 to Jason = 521.

If you do win the Red Ambulance then congratulations! I won a green one with my first submission :D

I think you will have some serious competition for the red ambulance... ;)

Don't be so modest Tomoyo, we know you can do better :)

Fine. I'll have to settle for the green one then.

On the submission website, is the order of the submitted games in the order of submission or score?

Right now I'm on the bottom and just wondering what that indicates....thanks,

Casey

Dianthus is correct. Alphabetical order allows you to find your name in the list fast, although now that everyone gets an email confirming the upload data it's becoming less important for players to check.

As I only slipped my GOTM 36 submission under the wire at the last moment, and I'm still wresting with the decisions to be taken in GOTM 37 at 3700 BC, I'm impressed with your speed of play :D

I either treat Civ too much like a game, or don't know enough to know that I don't know. But I've found out though life experiences that if I think too much about something I'll start doubting myself and screw everything up. I realize that the beginning of a Civ game is very important, but I play this game to relax (yeah like you can do that while ruling the world) not to analyze every move.

Maybe that's why I'm just starting to play on Monarch now  .

I did the same thing, but in my case it has meant that I haven't gotten up the energy to even start GOTM 37. :)

You won't be anywhere near close to that particular award. I was keeping a nice turn log up until the moment it became clear that I was dead, and I didn't even make it off the first page of notes. So much for my decision to start participating in the QSC.

 You're quite right, I should lighten up I guess. But for this game I'd really like to survive to submit a QSC - I failed last month, only for time pressure. But the self-doubt was there on this game before I started the analysis and I'm hoping to reduce it by thinking a bit. As it's Deity, I seriously doubt that my usual warmongering approach of "Damn the torpedos and full steam ahead" will get me past first base.

I might have mentioned it before, but my usual tactic of "send the SODs at the cities and hope for the best" isn't working so well...

Just a little hint...

I think I am playing these Gotms too loosely. I tend to think that they are solo games, not one that score should be maximized. This isn't that good, considering that I'm a builder at heart...

I also think the competition for the red ambulance will be pretty good. Although I might even be in competition for a green ambulance... :mischief: Depends on what happens in the next few turns.

I'll have to wait until the first spoiler to see how well I'm doing compared to other, better players. :)

I'm in the 3700 BC boat with Alan, although I now know what I'm planning to do next -- just a matter of finding the time to play!
