Okay so most of my games are played on warlord/prince and i admit i'm not the best player at civ. But in a new game as Rome on pangea i was really pissed off! I was only playing on prince, and i just beat a game on prince as the Dutch easily!

Anyway so skip ahead around 90 turns i have two cities, 1 spearman, 1 archer,1 great general and 1 catapult that was gifted by a city state. Because i had just made a new city and barbs were constantly harassing the workers who were working luxes , i had -1 happiness and slow growth. Then , that Babylonian bastard attacks. He has too big an army. Atleast 3 warriors, 2 spearman, atleast 2 bowmen and a catapult. And a great general! What the hell were they doing up there!? How can you build that big an army , manage the upkeep ,and build other necessary buildings for your civilization?! how?

Please, i'm new to this whole domination victory style , in my opinion it is by far the hardest! I always try to rush monuments, granarys and other buildings and don't have enough time for making an army! What do i do?!:mad:

Build new cities on hills for defense and production bonus. You can also build cities on luxury resources to automatically get the benefits. Aside from that, in higher difficulties the AI will usually beat you to ancient age wonders / religion. Expect that and plan accordingly. Do focus more on military and archers because their aggression level is higher.

The biggest thing is dont focus on buildings at first. I tend to get a library in each city and either workers or warriors in the rest till I have a decent amount of defensive units. Check the demographics screen often at the start, you want to kep your army in the top 3 or 4 depending on how many civ's there are in the game. Also you want to try to get the national college up asap. My tech line usually goes pottery>writing>LUX tech (Calendar first if you have the lux) > Bee line to Philosophy to get the college. From there start on your way to civil service then education with the occasional hit in the bottom branch of the tree to get some attacking units to attack or defend. That and try to get more cities by turn 90. 2 by 50 and 4 by 100 is decent but on a larger map you can get a lot more cities but on a 6-8 civ map 4 is good. Try some games on a 4 person map to start if you still have trouble. Less people to worry about with more room for error will let you figure out the best way for you.

Take a look at Tabarnak's Tradition 4 cities opening thread. That setup all but guarantees you can defeat the AI's early rush and sets you up well for almost any game.

The key to succesful defence is archers/CBs, which can later be used for early/mid-game conquering. Rushbuy archers if necessary, sell all your excess luxes/horses to the AI. If you have a city under siege, focus your firing on AI melee units, since ranged units can't capture cities.

Science is what will get you the farthest in the early game, so focus on that. Library and monument are the only buildings you need for a while. (granary if you have alot of wheat, deer, etc, or if you are on plains) Get a worker out quick too and start improving those tiles. Luxuries and farms should be your priorities. Sell Lux to AI for 240 a piece. Dont sell Lux if it will knock you in to neg :c5happy:, you want to keep growing.

As for Bab attacking you, keep an eye on the global politics screen. Do they covet your lands? If so, expect to be attacked. 3 archers or CB can hold off almost any force, just make sure you plant someone at your borders to watch for incoming armies. Once you get alot of science and build a tech lead, you can steamroll everything with advanced era units.

Also I would recomend MadDjinn's youtube videos, they were a great help when I started.

At turn 90, you had 2 cities and 3 military units. That is not enough military. It can be tough getting used to a higher difficulty level (I'm currently stuck between King and Emperor - one's too easy, the other's too hard), but keep trying. Archers are your friend - once you research archery, build one per city as a garrison, and at least one more for barb hunting and defense. If you have aggressive neighbors, tech towards Construction so you can upgrade your archers to Composite Bowmen. These units will be enough to hold off most early rushes.

Thanks a lot for all the advice people , it has really helped. So do I basically focus the first two ages on mainly military units and then later build some buildings? Also in the rome game I went with the honor tree because of the barb bonus and the fact that Rome seems like a very military focused civ. was this the right choice? The YouTube via we're also a great help!

I play deity pretty easily, little pieces of advice.

Make sure to sell EVERY luxury/resource you can (ie, stay happy) at all times. Game can largely be described as a fight for resources.

Rush buy the hell out of workers early on, improve a luxury, sell the luxury, rush buy another worker, and repeat until you have plenty of workers running around.

I rush buy nearly all of my settlers if Im playing a tradition route. Possible exception if Im really mine heavy (you can have negative food and not have your city starve while building a settler.) Also remember you can rush buy a settler in a frotiner city that is closer to your new location.

Just actually think about things that you are doing... dont just mindlessly build things.

Opening the Honor tree (I usually do this with my second policy choice) is handy for taking on barbarians and giving yourself a culture bonus in the early game. I would not recommend going further with Honor- you'll get a lot further with Tradition or Liberty.

@Hadisami8

The above responses are all great but don't get too stressed about perfecting things like the 4 city tradition opening. The level that you're playing on still has loads of room for error. In general is a good idea to get the techs required to get the resources that are in your local vicinity hooked up ASAP. Archery probably wouldn't hurt but if you are playing Rome then I suggest a few more warriors to hold off the barbs and any early DoW and to protect the few workers working those lux resources.

Now, tech to iron working ASAP, upgrade the warriors to the rome UU. don't forget these units build roads so keep your workers building improvements and leave the roads to the units. Keep some cash to upgrade warriors (remember it's quicker to build warriors then upgrade). You may need to buy/build a settler to hook up iron if it's not in your tiles already. If it's just out of reach, spend some cash to buy the tiles. Failing that, try to get iron from a CS.
If you are going on the offensive from here, don't forget to take a few range units with you.
Good luck

IMHO, the key things are
1) don't neglect your military even while focusing on other things,
2) sell excess resources,
3) build the national college asap, and
4) research agreements

With these everything up to and including King should be fairly easy.

For the higher levels I find you have to start bee-lining techs and optimising strategies a bit more.
