Well through careful decisions regarding tech trades and emphasis on research rather than expansion I was able to get refrigeration from liberalism!! at about 1400AD. I used espionage on the tech leaders who were on par with me but going down different tech paths to make sure none of them had access to paper or education for as long as possible.

what was your best tech grabbed through liberalism? what did you do to leverage that position?

On Monarch I get get any late renaissance/early industrial with lib tech at will pretty much. I usually aim for steam power or see if I can hold out for assembly line. I'll research it until it's 1 turn away then just keep an eye on any threats research. I haven't bothered trying to go any deeper than assembly line but I'm sure it can be done fairly easily.

I once saw someone take Mass Media with Liberalism... that was one of the fastest UN wins I've seen before...

Edit: see correction below

I think Radio has been the latest tech for me (Warlords) via Liberalism with Mansa. :D

With espionage in BTS, you can probably get a lot further if you beeline Lib.

How the heck did the whole world neglect Liberalism for that long or were they so far behind?

Whoops, I was mistaken, I went back and checked, and the tech was Radio (Mass media was lightbulbed). Still, that's pretty good for a Prince-level game.

Radio is pretty spectacular to get with Liberalism - that's why I remember it from my game. Usually it's Astronomy, Nationalism or perhaps 1-2 levels 'better'. Recently I tried to target Steel as my free tech - Cannons, Ironworks... What's not to like about that? :)

how did they get behind?? well they really didnt and while I was able to snag a late game tech, I had to accellerate my research and delay conquest goals to accomplish this.

the AI on the other continent went feudalism guilds gunpowder chemistry route

espionage against AI towns on my contienent slowed them down, and heavy use of forment unhappiness and poison waters.

I refused to trade paper to anyone until 1 person had it. I also targeted those civs with my espionage points to make sure they were not done researching education. I was in the middle of researching physics when I had to stop to research liberalism snagging medicine.

next was constitution followed by corporations and founding sid's sushi. sent 2 executives to the other continent and now they're paying heavily for it

1400 AD is crazy late for liberalism, If I dont get it by 600 AD it seems I'm beat to it, although usually I will lose the race somewhat intentionally, in favor of temporary millitary advantages. Usually the nationalism taj mahal golden age is what I would like to take when I am successful.

In Sisiutil's latest Peter All Leaders Challenge, I grabbed Radio in my shadow game. Because I had a moderate espionage lead, I was able to wait for Liberalism until I saw that a rival was aiming for it.

Radio. Sure, the AI techs a bit slower in BtS than in Warlords, but sheesh!

pure silliness, all true but posted for giggles:

i took radio with the oracle and mass media with lib to bag a UN win in 10BC. then again that was on chieftain level with handpicked opponents . *giggle*

prince level, i once saved lib for physics to get the GS. then again, i ended up quitting that game when a loss seemed inevitable and the fun of playing went away...

... Saving the Oracle for radio... Lol? That I'd like to see... sure it wasn't on settler without AIs? :king:

My last game, I missed liberalism because (although I researched straight toward it starting early in the game) I had just conquered myself a really big, spread-out empire with a big army and so I was stuck with bad research til i had courthouses and such. If I had gotten liberalism, I'd have been stuck with something kinda cheap to research, anyway. (banking maybe).

Mansa Musa beat me in that race so I took revenge and took away half his empire, including razing his capital.

In my current game (BtS, Monarch, Aggressive AI) I got Liberalism at about 1700 AD and got Assembly Line with the free tech. It looks like I could have waited and gotten an even later tech since everyone else seems to be ignoring Liberalism even though they are not that far behind me on tech. No matter, the factories have skyrocketed my productivity and my infantry are starting to take over the continent.

I don't know. I always beeline towards Liberalism because I just don't want to miss out on the free tech so I get Astronomy or Nationalism with it always.

Actually been playing as Willem and makes perfect sense to get Liberalism with him to get 'Free Speech'. 100% :culture: + more :gold: in towns. Hell yes! AND get East Indiamen with it. No other leader has a greater reason to get Liberalism ASAP.

The English queens are also good candidates to get Liberalism for 'Free Speech', especially with Victoria I find all my little cities need culture help at that stage. But with them the first to get Nationalism is handy to get GOLDEN AGE through Taj Mahal.

On BtS Monarch, being able to see what the AI is researching can allow you to sit one turn from liberalism for centuries (up to 1500AD in some games at least). I've taken Biology in OCC games (if you get a forest start, that's huge), but generally get bored and settle for steam power (mmm...levees) in normal games.

Now that the AI's lost its upgrade bonus, I am starting to see a bit of tank v longbow action though.
