How long do the pains for appendicitis last?

Not true, appendicitis pain can come and go over a long period and slowly progress into extreme pain.

Well, I'll be praying that the "exploding organ" part would wake me up. ;)

If your appendix ruptures, you could bleed out and succumb to death from internal bleeding within a matter of hours. You need to get it checked out if you feel that there is a problem. Don't wait until it is serious.

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small, finger-shaped sac that is attached to the large intestine. Experts do not fully understand the purpose of the appendix.

Most of the time, the appendix does not cause problems. Occasionally, however, it gets blocked by bacteria and becomes swollen and infected.

If the infected appendix is not removed, the infection can cause the appendix to break open or rupture. This spreads infection into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis. Peritonitis is a serious problem that requires emergency care.

About 8 out of 100 people will get appendicitis. It is most common in people ages 10 to 30, although it can occur at any age.

At this point the pain isn't really that bad at all, and I wouldn't wake my mother.

If this keeps me awake, I'll think about it - but it seems to be lessening. (Or maybe that's just because I've been sedentary for a while.)

Well, keep an eye on it; and by all means, if it gets worse, please, please see a doctor, soon.

You know, it's kinda funny when you see a thread titled, "How long do the pains for appendicitis last?". That shows how self-reliant we Civfanatics are! Doctor? We don't need no stinkin' doctor. Seriously cgannon, get it checked out by a doctor or something. If we lost you, this forum would be a lesser place!

I don't know if it's an old wive's tale, but I always heard that if your pain very suddenly goes away, that mean's it has ruptured and that you'd beter get help pronto.

I would think something exploding within would not lead to an instant cessesion of pain, but then again I'm not an old wife. Also, I've known some old wives who were pretty darned sharp, so I guess we shouldn't dismiss their sayings out of hand.

False. The pain would probably become very intense and stay at that intensity if it ruptured.

Hey cgannon64, if the pain gets bad, get to the hospital as quickly as possible. Like John HSOG said, it can get to being a life or death type of thing.

I can just affirm what has been been already said :

GET TO THAT HOSPITAL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

My appendix bursted when I was 13, and the only thing that saved me was that I could get operated immediately.

EDIT: Rule of the thumb here, if you have pains in your stomach for more than 6 hours, you should call for a doctor.

Go to the doctors now. I had appendix pains tha startd around midnight when I was 11, and if I had not got to the doctors that night it would aparantly have ruptured before morning.

Incidentally, does anyone know if appendicitis was a major killer before the coming of modern medicine? It seems quite common.

Appendicitis occurs, IIRC, in about eight percent of the population, usually between ages ten and thirty years.

I always thought it lasted until you have it removed or die. Whichever comes first.

Seriously.

Appendicitis pains last until your appendix bursts and spews 'debris' all over your 'clean' areas, causing severe infections and even death perhaps.

I think. They may go away but from what I've seen all my life on tv and elsewhere that seems to be a likely scenario.

I've heard of peoplehaving healthy appendics removed as a precuation if they plan to spend an extended amount of time in isolation, away from medical care - for example if you're going to live in some small research base in Alaska... or teaching school children in some remote African village.

Just because you don't need it, the problems can start randomly to ANYBODY and the surgery is relatively minor... And if it DOES happen, without treatment you will die...

Yeah, it went away fine after a nice big breakfast of waffles and bacon. And I got to enjoy my sister's wedding in peace - but not before having to fly from Manhattan to Brooklyn and back within 30 minutes, to pick up a computer I was supposed to bring.

Oh, and TLC: Wouldn't you have felt like crap if I had died? :p I bet you would have told yourself, "Oh, it's just a coincidence that he never returned..."
