How many countries can you name in 5 minutes?

How many countries actually officially recognise Palestine anyway? I'm sure many don't. And since we're thinking about it, wouldn't Kosovo be added to America's list? Does that make them equal to 193?

Most of them recognise Palestine as a state/country actually, about 100/193. The UK does, we have diplomatic ties, some countries even have formal embassies.

The Palestinian state is recognised by around 100 countries.[1] There are also various other proposals for a Palestinian state depending on views of Palestinian statehood, as well as differing definitions of Palestine and "Palestinian."

The State of Palestine (Arabic (دولة فلسطين) is a proposed country, its location including the Gaza Strip and the autonomously controlled West Bank areas, currently controlled by the Palestinian National Authority, an interim governing body set up in accordance with the Oslo Accords, and the outcome of peace negotiations started at the Annapolis Conference.

Several proposals exist for the possible borders of the future state.

Cool. I knew some countries recognised it, and the Australian media certainly treats it as a sovereign state, but I had no idea how many nations did so.

Palestine or Transdniestria okay. But Greenland, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Netherlands Antilles or Christmas Island? They're not countries I think...

Huh? They qualify on this thing?

Greenland is, as to the rest I'd say not.

They may qualify but as I said there are only 192/193 countries, I've heard of 195 at a stretch. But not 270. :)

I let the game run for five minutes and posted the names of the countries I "forgot" a few posts back. I edited the post to prevent a double-post, which is why you might have missed it...

Greenland isn't a country.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries

This list says otherwise. But it's not actually that clear cut. I say it has a strong case, that's probably why it is listed as one of the 1/193 countries on most charts.

As an analogy Greenland is a country in the same way Bermuda is, even though technically it's part of the commonwealth of territories and countries.

114 the first time, but I spent a good minute trying variations of "Democratic Republic of the Congo"/"Zaire" which didn't work. Also I suck at typing. Should have gotten so many more than that.

EDIT: Tried it again, and this time I managed to get to 130 left before the timer went down to 00:09 and stopped there for whatever reason, letting me input a lot more.

It's a dependant territory
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dependent_territories

An autonomous province of Denmark. No need to call them a country(independent is implicitely given here, in my opinion) before they declare themselves independent(my guess is within 20 years).

An independent territory is still a country, until the 20th century Canada was an independent territory, no ones going to claim they weren't also a country, I'd like you to find a chart where they are not listed as a country, I think to be frank you'd be hard pressed. Like I say I'd probably have a bit of a problem with Bermuda, being as it's a tiny Island, and is far from independent but what is the difference between Iceland and Norway and Denmark and Greenland (which is autonomous) except that Iceland is no longer a colony, and Greenland is still owned by Denmark?

Greenland (Kalaallisut: Kalaallit Nunaat, meaning "Land of the Greenlanders"; Danish: Grønland) is a self-governing Danish province located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically and ethnically an Arctic island nation associated with the continent of North America, politically and historically Greenland is closely tied to Europe, specifically Iceland, Norway, and Denmark. In 1978, Denmark granted home rule to Greenland, making it an equal member of the Rigsfællesskab. Greenland is the world's largest island by area (Australia and Antarctica are considered continents rather than islands).

I got 79... got a mind blank on Africa.

I got like 96 first try, 112 second try.

The difference is that Norway, Iceland and Norway are completely independent, while Greenland and the Faroese islands are granted home rule by the Danish government:

"Home rule refers to a demand that constituent parts of a state be given greater self-government within the greater administrative purview of the central government.

In the United Kingdom, it has traditionally referred to self-government, or devolution, for constituent nations (namely Scotland, Wales and Ireland). Home rule also refers analogously to the process and mechanisms of self-government by municipalities in many countries with respect to their immediately superior level of government (e.g., U.S. states, in which context see special legislation). It can also refer to the similar system by which Greenland and the Faroe Islands are associated to Denmark."

You yourself mentioned the number 193. Well, there are 193 sovereign states in the world according to the wikipedia link, so I assumed(and still assume) that by "country" you were referring to "sovereign state". And no, they are not considered among the 193 sovereign states(or countries if you like) in the world.

I got 94.

I think the trick is to do it geographically, whereas I was just all over the place. I couldn't remember which countries I'd already done so I ended up having to go for the -stans, which is not a good idea when you're under time restraints. ;)

EDIT- 91 second time round! I blame my wrist.

If I could see a map, with no names on it, I would do much better

I do it geographically and regionally, but I miss stuff like...Nicaragua out of central America. Antigua and Barbados in the Carribean. So on and so forth.

it accepts kosovo. I think that debate is over, eh?

98 due to being a bad speller.
