How many farms do you need if you you have 20 grown level city and about 15 units stationed?

Enough to be able to mine/workshop all plains in a city, or as many grassland/food resources/floodplains there are to create the most amount of Specialists.

Also stationed troops have nothing to do with it...

Farms add +1 Food to the tile they are on; each population requires 2 food. Thus, tile-score;

Enter the city screen right after a city is founded; count tiles in the fatcross with 1 food as -1, 0 food as -2, 2 food as 0, the city tile as 2, and 3 food as 1. Add up all the values. If it is a negative number, then the number of farms you need is enough to bring the value to 0. if it is positive, divide by 2, and that is the number of specialists you can have.

All that goes out the window when you get biology and state property/corporations.

Actually, it all goes out the window the instant you include health issues...

Health issues aren't too bad (have the sick guy work a farm instead of a mine) except when its time to get the factories set up since a coal+oil+factory+coal plant=9:yuck: and your probably near the 20 pop so you can't just work a couple extra farms until more :health: arrives.
