How many games do you abandon?

I never used to abandon games ever when I played PTW but since Conquests I'm abandoning every other game it seems. I dont know what it is with Conquests but I find it very hard to get started at all.

When I first got the expansion I started a game as the Byzantines on Warlord and got out-produced and out-researched almost from the off. Never had a chance to expand and ended the game. The second Byzantine game I attempted I lost 6 Dromons in a row with Settlers and units on board trying to get just one square in the danger zone to another island. I was so far behind after losing so many Settlers I abandoned that one. The next I got overran by the Romans before I even researched my first tech!

I finally got a decent game going as the Romans but found it tough due to the fact I had only Iron and Horses on my entire continent (and it was a dang large island). The next four games were all abandoned for a variety of reasons.

I just started one as Babylon now, set my tech slider to 80% to get Warrior Code for their UU. Got the "blah blah's book of who is the most advanced" and was bottom on each and every one. Ran into the Mongols - already they were about 5 techs ahead and wouldnt trade, ran into the Germans - same story. Goody Huts gave em all a tech bonanza. Although I popped a Settler in one, I only found two others - both with Barbs. Damned expansionist civs!!! I hate em...

Another game abandoned. *Sigh*

How many games do you abandon?

I haven't finished a game since sometime last year... Definately not since before christmas. I don't finsish many games.

I have a different probelm than you though, I love the opening part of the game, I just get bored later on. This hasn't really changed for me with Conquests though :(

If you can't beat them, join 'em ;)

I abandon a *lot* of games, it has to be said, although it's often more to do with attention than losing (not saying I never lose). The last game I abandoned for game reasons, I took 3/4 turns to settle my first Civ and all the others were miles ahead of me by the time I met them! I didnt have a bad starting point either; next to Horses on a River...

Pretty much all the games I don't win by Conquest right away I quit. Too tedious and generally know if I will win or not for sure by early-mid game.

i only abandon them after i know ive won.

I have only finished two or three games since Christmas, all losses except one (Emperor difficulty).

My problem is the exact opposite of yours! I love the late game, but I hate the early game. I find myself quitting most of the time (when I do quit) in the early middle ages.

I'll abandon a game if it is really tough going and isn't working out by 1000 bc or so. (insert "but those games make you a better player" comment here) However, once I get a game going, I feel I've invested too much time and energy to not finish and get a score.

I know, I know, the score is just a number but there are two of us using the same laptop so I like to have proof that I'm better -- but she IS catching up quick. ;)

If I were to give a ratio, probably 3 out of 4 games never see 10 AD.

None. I never give up. I hate losing. If I do I spend a lot of time figuring out how to improve my strategy for the next game.

When I get serious about the high score HOF I may abandon a few because they won't yield a high enough score.

I sometimes quit in Modern Ages - I know I will win, and I do not play to the end.

However, I am struggling on Demigod and I really restarted SEVERAL times for a better starting position.

Hint: Egyptians, Seed 2100160304, Huge World, everything Medium except WARM climate. ;)

I'm really discriminate about my maps. I've used Mapfinder to generate thousands of worlds for my current game and only actually started playing about a hundred, only one of which turned out to be something I liked.

I've been like that, but I discovbered that it takes part of the fun out of the game for me. I now start with the map I'm given, no matter what. Play most games until victory, but I agree with Gainy bo that the beginning of the game is coolest.

I did that with I and II, and used to do with that III until I beat Deity starting from a jungle island by myself. Now that I play HOF games exclusively (aside from a PBEM) I refuse to go with a bad starting location. A good beginning is needed if I'm going to mow down the AI with hundreds of Cavalry before they even get Muskets or RR...

How often do you lose your games? What difficulty level do you play at?

I abandon quite a few games, actually. But I love the ones where I come back from behind from a crappy starting spot and win! Those are the best. :)

As far as I can remember I've never finsihed a game. Very early on I know if I'll or not. Sometimes I know it in medieval, sometimes in Industrial but when I get to Modern (If I already haven't abandoned the game) I know I'll win for sure so I quit because it's all about cleaning pollution and deciding what city improvements to build.

And it annoys me because I've never had the nuclear experience. I've had nukes but never used them(only to test reactions and see how they work) and never been nuked myself. Modern warfare is different than the simple ancient/medieval/industrial warfare which is basically the same. Bombardement is everything in modern games and I like that. I should try finishing a game once.

When I mean "finish a game" I mean research to the end of the tech three and then win.

I went into the editor and changed the domination victory to be 30% of the world's land area and 30% of the world population. I found that playing past this point is somewhat boring because I am more powerful than anyone else and there is no tension left in the game.

This way I can earn a victory yet avoid the long drawn out endgame. :)

Note that if you don't want to use the editor, you can change the domination victory to 30/30 by clicking the "Game Limits" button in the "Player Setup" screen when starting a new game. However, this must be done each time you start a new game because these modified values are not saved.

I believe this feature was added in Conquests.

I am abandoning most games now in 1000 BC. At that time the game has usually been decided. There is no way I can lose, it's clear what to expect and how to proceed, and the remainder is just tedious work, so I'd rather start a new game. :)
