OK, I know there will be Anarchy, Despotism, Republic, and Democracy just from the screen shots and info at civ3.com. Will there be Communism and Monarchy? What about Fascism? Does anybody know? I know there won't be Fundamentalism or Nationalism.

In Civ there were six governments. In Civ2 there were seven governments. I hope there are at least eight governments in Civ3.

I always thought that the governments were a very interesting part of the game. In the first Civ, I usually stayed under despotism the whole game and just fought like a war machine. In Civ2, I usually switched to Monarchy as soon as possible and then to Communism later. It was versatile because it allowed me to get technology while not falling behind in military power. I wish I knew what governments were going to be in Civ3 so I could start planning my strategy now.

They dropped Fundy, but everything else is intact as far as I know.

There are six, five if you include anarchy. I don't, because anarchy is a state of chaos in the absence of government.

But the Governments are:

Despotism
Monarchy
Communism
Republic
Democracy

However, I think there is a good chance that the attributes for each type have been changed.

I hope they have been changed- I REALLY want the other governments to be more than just transitions to get to democracy. While democracy has worked ok with many places it isn't all that's out there. And in reality there are no democracies, only republics...

Just had to point this out (sorry)

How I understand there are 5+1 government types such as in Civ1. It's too small for many gamers who likes a war style playing. But it's enough for me. I use serially Desp, Mon, Rep and as finally Dem. I switch to Democracy as fast as I discover it. And switch to Communism only for very short and powerful war action if I can't provoke enemy to attack me (at that I stay with Democracy). Of course to fight with Democracy be inconveniently but only Dem gives the maximum goods for civilization.

Communism (in Civ2!!) is my favorite govt! I'm hoping it keeps all its great points in civ 3. Veteran spies, 0 Corruption, high cost to bribe (OK, not Democracy's immunity, but still good), double police effect (leads to well-defended cities = solid play), and lack of any penalties like sad faces, fundy's sci cut, or a senate to screw up perfectly good wars...leads to the intangible 'fun factor'. No distractions wasting your time while you're conquering the world! So you don't instantly have size 25 cities? You don't have size 25 pollution to deal with!

I understand, if you are playing for points, Rep/Dem builds those pops like mad! If you are playing just to win, without farming every square...IMHO Communism offers the simplest path.

I agree with you. Communism is the best choice for war style playing. It is a pity this knowledge place so far on the discovery tree. But the Democracy gives possibility to develop more quickly. Yes, this is a difficult task, but the result is worthy.

I think this is why some people would like the government model from SMAC. Even more control.

As for Communism, I have never played it. I want the extra trade bonus of Rep / Dem. I very much like to get a large tech edge. You know at the later part of the game, all computer players will gang up on you. Oh gee, Mr. Computer, can't your Musketeers beat my Stealth ftr.

As for high scores, yes, Democracy can't be beat
