How many units do you send to battle?

i attack with as much as possible i normally prepare my wars though so i normally know what im up against so i can choose how much of my army to send in

Zachriel: 300! I usually use 10-30 throughout the game, depending. If I just want a few cities, its 20-40, and if I'm on a conquest, It'll be 50-60. But 300??? Do you play on Diety? I play on Regent, and 50 has been sufficent. (Note: 50 in each stack, I like to have 2+ stacks).

With this thread in mind I played GOTM12, keeping track of the starting attack stack size in each age.

Ancient: 14 Horse, 3 Impi
Middle: 20 Knights, 4 Pikemen
Industrial: 32 Cavalry, 10 Riflemen, 11 Cannon, 4 Workers and a Knight Army
Modern: 48 Tanks, 20 Infantry, 23 Artillery, 6 Army Leaders, and one Fighter (This is a little less than normal, but the enemy conspired secretly, then attacked en masse by surprise. )

It all depends on the situation. Is my enemy on the same continent or do i need to ship my troops to the enemy. Tech determins how much I need to outnumber my opponent. If I'm at the same tech level then I like to have 5 times the number of defending units, if I have a few tech levels on the AI I can get away with 3 times his units. If I have to send troops what has been working for me is building 20 gallies and fill them with troops, 50/40 offencive/defensive and the rest is arty (capaults/cannon), as I progress thru the ages I just upgrade my flotila and keep filling it up, so by the time I'm attacking in the modern age with transports I'm sending 160 units. This generaly lets me concure and hold 3-5 cities while razing a few for workers

hmm...well u wanne know what i do? Well i will tell u!

I try to get a leader to build armies in the furthur. I do that by attacking babarian camps.....so I will get Elite units. With those Elite units I will attack an other civ. When i got my leader...... I will keep him alive until I have de recources to build more armies.

At the time I went in the industrian age I realy focus on an large military. If I have the feeling that I will be attacked within a couple of turns.....I will move my troops in a good position so I can strike them hard within 2 turns.

What I also do is......if a unit gets it to Elite status I will pull him back out of the attack and stack them up for the further.

So when I start a second war against a stronger enemy I have a very strong Elite army ready!

Simple answer: All of them.

When do I think myself ready for war? When I can hit half of my front with my enemy with a force 3-4 times as large as his expected defending force (assuming even techs). That is, if my front contains 4 cities, I'll need roughly 18 offensive units ready to go before I attack -- with expectation of a good reinforcement stream.

Of course, it's usually moot as the rabid AI declares war, but....

Or I'm playing Always War and declare with one warrior to my name -- always scary.

the size of my invasions depend upon how many borders I share with different civ's, my relations with other civ's and the size of the civ I am attacking. In a rough Guide, I want a 3-1 advantage in attacking force over the civ in question, (if I have a spy planted) or 5 attacking and two defending units and two bombarding units (cannon, arty, planes) per city (this is a minimum requirement) I try to stack my units into 3 major stacks (20+) and 2 or more minor stacks (5-10). My largest stack (typically in excess of 50) will orient towards the enemy core cities with the other stacks supporting as necessary.

Antiquity - About 30 swordsmen. I have played a game where I had 46 jags, and 25 swords at the most!

Middle Ages - I usually don't have wars in the middle ages. I spend time building culture. Although, Med. Inf. might change that..

Industrial - 150 at the most. ;) That must've been a sight. 150 tank amassed at the Babylonian border. (that's 150 tanks)

Modern - Never had a modern war. But, I'd probably have 200 modern armor, with my cities on wealth. :)

I normally attack a city with 5-8 units (say, 5 in antiquity, 6 in middle and so on). I also like to use a sea-blitz & daul-ROP tactic. Surrond the the civ's cities by sea, and build up on the other side of the civ (their neighbor) for 20 turns. I usually split my forces into two sections (one for each side as support).

If there's an out-of-the-way city, I might send 1-3 units to take it.

As many as I can. Ancient era wars are usually small, unless I'm trying some HOF game, then I'll have 100+ horsemen armies with me and even more spears. Medievel forces are usually 40-70. Knights, pikes mainly. When Cavs come around I will usually go past the 100 unit mark. Infantry usually numbre 100-150. Tanks are less because they can massacre infantry so its usually under 100. Then MA and MI are well over 150, because MIs in large cities are near impossible to defeat.

But it all depends on how big the map is and how powerful the enemy is. When I played HOF games, I had over 150 knights, and it would go well over 200 cavalry if I had continued. Those games get ridiculously large.
