I'm wondering how often other players find themselves in unwinnable positions.
I was pretty invincible at Warlords level and I basically could win no matter what the variables of the game turned out to be. I am basically a Warmonger that likes to destroy (or vassalize) a culture once it goes hostile and I am currently playing the Warlords expansion pack (I own BTS but have not loaded it yet).
I always play the game choosing "Continents" and Normal speed and I play various leaders and now I'm playing on Prince level.
OK. So what usually gets me into trouble is I like to conquer most of the continent I'm on. I was originally an early rusher, but now I wait to see what develops. So in my last game I started on a continent with 2 other Civs. After I had about 6 cities, I attacked the Civ that was not friendly to me. As I was ready to deliver the coup de grace to the hostile Civ, the other Civ declares war on me. I make peace with the first Civ and go to war with the 2nd Civ. Now I fight the second Civ for 20 turns and he offers me a good peace deal. OK so now we have peace.
I go into rebuilding mode. In the meantime, 3 other Civs come into the picture, and I decide to wipe out Civ 1 as his frigging capital is causing me all kinds of cultural pressure.
So now the 100 turns left warning comes up. I don't have enough ships to attack the new civs, 2 have scores equal to mine, and the new civs are equal to me in tech. As I have no relations with the new civs I can't pit them against one another to start a world war. I can't out tech them and I can't reach them soon enough, with enough units, to wipe them out. I know I can't win so I choose to resign.
I realize I got into trouble because I didn't go find the other Civs, however I usually don't worry about exploring because 1. The other Civs usually find me first 2. When they do find me there is usually only one powerful Civ left on the other continents and 3. I was in about 70 turns of war and just didn't think about it -- Cry Havoc and Let Slip the Dogs of War!!
So I've played about 20 games all together and like the post originally started out, I'm curious how often other players find themselves in unwinnable positions. On Warlod level I was winning at least 90% of my games while on Prince I am winning maybe 50%-60%.
