I'm just curious about how often other players go to war. I try to avoid war at all costs until steam power rolls around. I find that war before that just moves to slow and is incredibly tedious, although if i must i will fight. Anyone else do the same thing? And also, how many times do u go to war in an average game?

I normally go to war once or twice each age.

If I'm the first to get IW, iron, & have a close neighbor. I'll mass produce swords and attack. Same with horses, cavelry, & tanks.

I go to war once in the middle ages, then maybe 2-3 times in the industrial ages.. i find it helps to go to war at the crucial stage in Industrial ages because it stops them from progressing far ahead..

one tactic i usually use is to get other people into the war as well. they concentrate their production on armies and pay less attention to science and production.. it slows down the fast-growing civ that you're not at War with..

one big War always comes by at the end of the Industrial age when i get the Marines.. that's when i bombard the biggest civilization other than me..

I can't last long without war. As soon as I get knights I go to war until someone is eliminated. And I only stay peaceful long enough so I can build enough troops for the next civ.

I typically go to war when it feels right. Kinda silly, considering its a game and all, but sometimes I'll just feel that my stack of 15 swords can get the job done, while I'll feel hesitant with a stack of 30 in a different situation.

In the end, it all comes down to the situation. Some games I'll hardly spend any time at peace, and others I'll fight only one or two wars.

When I get my favority unit the cavalary :D , even better when Sipahi:goodjob:

Depends on the game. I find I generally have a war of conquest with a near neighbour early on. Take thier territory and build the FP.
After that I'll go to war if I think I can gain an advantage out of it. Like a getting a resource, stunting the growth of a big civ, getting a few GL's.

Whenever i think i can win. But most of the time its not me that declares war. On higher levels the AI does that bit for you ;)

Usually later in the game... once my factory infrastructure is up and running. But if I have an Ancient UU I usually go to war then for the GA and possible teritory gains

A lot more often than I used to, but not as often as a lot of players, I'm sure.
I always ask myself what I'm going to gain by making war. Cities? Luxuries? Desirable geography? Resources? I don't go to war for the sake of going to war, but if I can benefit from it, I go ahead.
And kman, don't overlook early, ancient age wars. Often an ancient age war is a quicker, easier, and cheaper way to knock down a neighboring civ that you know you'll have to take on eventually. They don't have to be long and tedious. In the ancient era, AI's tend not to defend their cities too heavily, so a fairly modest stack of Swordsmen, Horsemen, Archers, or one of the early UU's can pick off 2 or 3 cities that will really give your early development a boost.
I find that when I'm next to one of the more agressive AI's (Germany and Zululand spring to mind :) ) an early war really helps "keep them in line" and often eliminates the need to deal with them once they have tanks (or, worse, Panzers.)

I go to war at least twice in the Ancient Ages to knock off neighboring civs. Then after that, it's usually only 1 time per age, depending if they have a resource I need, or I just dont like them.

Early wars are more tedious, but then again this whole game is tedious. I have to be very deliberate and micromanage to gain any advantage I can, particularly at emperor level.

I went to war at least eight times in my last emperor game.

Two times in ancient times to knock down the two other civs on my continent. This was VERY beneficial to getting earlier control of my continent.

At least two more times to wipe out the civs on my continent.

Two times to knock down the two largest civs on the other continent. Then rest the republic, then another war to eliminate one of the civs, and a final war to put the other in upheaval (down to one city that I gifted them before the war).

I did not have a war with one civ, and I needed to keep a second around so I could win the UN vote. Who says the UN is fair? :)

I plan to meet all the victory conditions of the game, the UN was just one.

I have won 99% of my games the military way.
The only exception was a game where I reached 100k per accident.
One of my favorite variant rules is "always war", currently I'm testing it on deity, pangea map. Another good variant is "oszillating war", war disrupted by periods of peace.
This way limited trading is possible and the tech pace is faster.

I generally avoid war in the ancient era unless I cornered someone (usually China) and they have only 4 or 5 cities, and they keep on trying to send settlers through my land. Then, I send a stack of horsemen and a stach of swordmen and I take them out before they can get galleys. Other than that, most of my major wars are fought as soon as i get chivalry, and then I start mass producing samurai and take over my continental rivals. If there is any weak civs on the other isle, I'll invade with my remaining samurai to get a foothold over there and try to get a GL to rush my FP. In the industrial era ill usually send stacks of cavalry/infantry if I feel my new land is being threatened. Modern warfare=no unless the enemy is the aggressor.

WOAH!! wait, are you telling me you can like.... not be at war?? the situation has never arrisen in my games due to my tendencies to be a blood thirsty warmonger :nuke:

I play on huge maps. Lately I have been playing as the Iroquois. It seems I only go to war one time. That one time lasts the entire game. What’s strange is that when I am ahead; as in biggest military, biggest land mass, and most advanced scientifically, other Civs will declare war on me. They grab a couple of guest workers (which I got from a previously destroyed nation) and then end up on the scrap heap of history.

Whoopee, I am up to 0.30 posts a day. At this rate I will have my own avatar when I hit retirement age, not that that's that far away.

That's only 27 months away... Don't let your boss know you're planning on early retirement ;).

I usially dont get into war untill the industrial age unless omeone REALLY pisses me off, but the wars i do have in the industrial age are vicious and long (one of them went for nearly 100 turns).

I try and avoid war untill i get tanks. If somebody makes a demand i always reject- so often i'm forced into war with knights and cavalry etc.. To me fighting with these units is boring, i build as many spearman as possible early on and continue upgrading untill they become mech infantry. Once i've got tanks i'm unbeatable. Sometimes when i need a war and someone has a worker in my territory etc... i make them angry by making demands untill eventually when i say "remove your troops or declare war" they do the honours.
