How to achieve cultural victory for Dummies

I must admit that this is a hard one. Cultural victory? Why go for it?

I'll tel you why. Cultural victory lets you know what wonders are in and what really benefits you most.

Simple. Beeline first on your economy then to religion. Some wonders need religion related techs. After that, start pumping out wonders!

Any reactions? Violent combustions? Peaceful words?

Feel free to contribute!

also, dont build any defensive units, because when those barbaric civs enter your boreders they will be so awe-struck by the magnificent wonders you built that they will drop their axes there and then, wet their pants and run of crying that their civ is inferior. if you build wonders you will also have a massive libido.

Cultural wins are fine and do not always require alot of wonder although they help. My views on a cultural win

1) You need to decide fairly early (BC early) if you want to go for a cultural victory.
2) You need numerous religions, although founding them or even switching out of no state religion are optional.
3) Build temples and spread the religions to all your cities. Build monestaries as early as possible, especially in the three legondary cities. Build catherdrals for each religion in each legendary city.
4) Make sure you have a high production fourth city for military.
5) Build alot of cottages in your big three cities. When you rev the culture slider up late in the game, you will be amazed at the extra culture.
6) Make sure one of the legendary cities has unchopped or lumbermilled forrests so you built the national park there for the extra artists.
7) Make sure one of the cities has the globetheater for the extra artists while in emancipation.
8) Speaking of emanciaption, do not hesitate to switch to caste system once you rev the cutlure slider up. You'll have alot of happiness.
9) Beeline industrialization before radio. Tanks will protect you from the AI trying to take out one of the legendary cities.
10) Wonders are helpful, but not essential: Some that are more important than others: Parthenon, Sisten Chapel (the most important), Statue of Zues, SOL, The radio/Mass media wonders.
11) Do not ignore science or teching.
12) Get music and Drama early. Building theaters by 1 AD in the three cities gets them to +6 culture after 1000 AD.
13) Save GPs for the culture producing Corps (Sids, creative construction, Jewelers). They can be founded in a non-big three city, just make sure you have wall street there.
14) Keep the military and navy very high.
15) The eifel tower is useless except for some extra culture in the city built. Broadcast towers are cheap enough and you only need three.
16) Once you have teched Mass Media and Industrialization, ramp the culture slider to 100%. Build wealth in otehr cities if you need the money.
17) If you have not realized you should be pumping out great artists, preferable in one of the big three cities by running excess artists. Do not unlease the culture bombs until you know which of the cities will need them the most.

Not all above have to be in each game, but I tried to cover as much as possible.

Sounds like a good idea so I'm gonna go do it right now. ( wanders off waiting for his computer to load up Warlords);)

Disagree with these 3.
13) Corporations don't come until late, using GPs earlier helps with tech and gives you culture for a long duration.
15)Broadcast tower is still 4-7 turns of production. Every turn of production can be put to use in your cultural cities. If I have a very high production capital(or other city) but lower production in my other 2 cultural cities, I will build Eiffel in the that city while I build other culture buildings in my other ones.
17) If you really want to do well you SHOULD know which city needs culture the most, and start the specialists early. Waiting produces less culture. And it's pretty easy to know which of your 3 cities needs it the most.

criteria for determining which city needs great artists the most:
1. Current cultural production rate.
2. Amount of production... if you don't have production you can't build cathedrals and wonders as fast... so low production hurts.
3. Amount of population that can be used for specialists.
4. Current amount of culture. If one has 3000 while the other has 5000, the 3000 one might have to do catchup(this is the hardest to calculate though, but with big differences its safe to say you need one city to catchup.)

I won't argue the first 2 although you an get ton's of culture in all three cities from the corps.

The last I think we agree on but perhaps I worded it wrong. My point is if you get an early GA, things can change which effect the rate of culture per city. SOmetimes City three has more commerce and jumps in culture production once the slider is set. It doesn't hurt to hold those GAs until the end.

Another point I forgot is civics. Government does not matter much, Free Speech is a must have, Caste system is preferred as long as happiness is not an issue, Free Maket for the extra commerce and corps, Pacifism is preferred although Free religion may be forced on you for diplomatic/cost reasons.

If it's late enough in the game that you definitely want to use the Great Artists for culture bombs, then you're right; it doesn't hurt to save them until the end. But a Great Artist born in the early to mid-game will yield a lot more culture if you settle him in one of your big three cities instead of creating a great work. A settled Great Artist's 12 culture per turn is amplified by religious building, civics, etc...with enough multipliers, it could take 50 turns or less to exceed the 4000 culture you get from a great work.

The danger, of course, is that you settle him in the city that ends up ahead of the others in culture anyway. If you calculate correctly, though, the payoff is worth the trouble.

Cultural Victories are way too easy and way too cheesey. The only easier victory is Apostalic Palace.

If you are playing with Permanent Alliances, switch to 100% culture as soon as you get your Permanent Alliance- no more need for research.

With or without PAs, all you need tech-wise is Liberalism for Free Speech.

NEVER research Mass Media. NEVER build the U.N. The only way you lose is if Mass Media is researched and someone builds the U.N. and someone else wins by Diplomatic Victory.

The only skill is knowing when to switch to Free Speech/ 100% culture. In general, the sooner the better. I'd say 20 turns after getting Liberalism at latest. If there is PA's, Liberalism -> Communism -> 100% culture.

What can I say, Cultural Victory is so easy. The only tech you need is Liberalism and the only Wonder you need is Sistine Chapel.

Um... don't wait on Priesthood because you want to build Temples as soon as possible for ancient culture bonus. Same with Drama, if you beeline you'll be able to get Theater for ancient culture bonus (if you don't beeline, then forget it you won't build them before 700 A.D.).

Cheers,

Dai
