Can some one help me with this ? I would like to know how to automate a settler. I know it can be done, because I used to do it before. After a lapse of one year, I don't seem to remember. Please help.:o :o

you can use the orders menu or I think the key is K.

K does automate the settler; and there's an additional bonus/cheat I think i read about somewhere on this board before:

If you're in the middle of nowhere and there's no water around to irrigate, you can automate a settler and it'll start irrigating even without access to water. This is a cheat the AI opponents uses, so I figure I'm allowed to use it as well (although I only use it sparingly-if there's water 2-3 cities away, I'll just do it the right way and irrigate my way to the inland city)

I don't trust those little settler buggers as far as I can chuck 'em. They're not very good at their jobs, and they end up wasting their time. Sort of like some real-world workers ...

And Nishdog, I was just kidding about the settler cheat. It's really quite handy in SP. You might want to try building airbases on hills -- you get extra food that way, IIRC.

I don't trust automated settlers either. Like i said, i only do it if i'm in the middle of nowhere; i will monitor what they are doing when automated, and I'll usually re-activate them after the first irrigation is built; then i can just manually irrigate around that, without having them running off building roads outside my city radius.

I never use automated settlers because I had bad experiences when I trusted my city advisors to do a good job...Trying to build a wonder in not one but all my below size 5 cities. Even though I was already building the same wonders in better cities. Grrr

I hate to do this, but Houston, We have a problem!!
I still cannot automate the settler by using the key K or using order menu. In fact, my order menu does not have a automate option. Help!!!

Go into your Civ2 directory and open a file called menu.txt
The following should be under the heading @orders

Build &Fortress|f
Automate Settler|k
Clean Up &Pollution|p

If the Automate settler option is missing, that may be your problem; add that line into the file using an ASCII text editor (I use DOS's edit command); If automate doesn't become available to you after this, i don't know what to say.

Make sure you back up your original menu.txt file before altering it. Good luck.

Actually, now that I think of it, try this before altering files:
make sure caps lock is off; you need to press the k button in lower-case for the automate feature to work.

I have this problem all the time, except not usually with small cities. I will have one of my well protected cities building a wonder and the next thing I know some puncy little town has built my damn United Nations! Aaarrrgghh!!

I think it may have been because I had over 100 cities when it started happening, which made it doubly annoying because this was the time when I really needed to be able to automate my cities...

I think that trick with the automating Settler is quite cheap. I never use it, unless I'm in reeeeeally deep trouble ;)

And that's one of the biggest problems in the game. Incredibly stupid AI. Too bad there's no way you can proritize some improvements :D

:santa:
