I just found out recently that you can disable Java/Javascripts in Internet Explorer by changing the security setting in the Internet Options panel (under Tools).

Tools --> Internet Options --> Security --> Custom Level

Then you can disable things like ActiveX, cookies, java, etc.

In Netscape 4.xx (and Communicator 4.xx), it's:

Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced

Java and Java Script can be enabled/disabled separately.

The popups are actually Java Script. However, disabling J & JS can also have other side effects, like automatically putting you Username and Password in the windows at the top of your new posts.

But killing J, JS, and Active-X makes your machine much more secure when surfing, esp. if you're in an untrusted website.

The best compromise is to run a 3rd party program that will recognize J, JS, and Active-X based on the source site. I still run AtGuard 3.22 for this, though there are newer programs out now. Some people like ZoneAlarm.

Well TF, at last you found that. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif" border=0>
What I also did several months ago was to also disable the pics and animation display. Because I feared that the huge CFC logo on the top of the page would not be discrete, since I was supposed to work. Now I have everything activated, my colleagues all know very well now what I am spending my day on <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif" border=0>
Btw, this key should be added to any keyboard, right?
