How to prevent total economic collapse

Hiya,

So i recently picked up BTS from a hiatus from civ. Ironically enough, after being an incredibly peaceful player up till now, with beyond the sword i have discovered a love of tearing through the lands crushing people with my mighty barbarians.

Anyhoo,

So im playing with Ghengis Khan on the 4th easiest (i think its noble, sorry im not at home and i dont remember all the details) and i have a fairly big landmass. Horses, iron, its all good. Im on continents, and i've gotten to the point where i can produce hundreds of kesheks to destroy my foes. I'malmost one tech away from feudalism, at which point i plan to capitulate the now much smaller nations around me. So i make a quick pre-war save, and start my conquest. I fly out with 3 squads of 20 kesheks with 4-6 catipults to tear through washingtons cities, i swiftly conquor most of his country. Now, during this time i've been trying to keep some gold reserves, so i've been turning down research to about 40%. I'm still close to feudalism being finished, i can capitulate Ol georgie, and get my economy booming again while using my still formidable conquor squads to get the smaller nations to my north and south. At this point i've added a 4th squad, and i've tried to keep the gold coming by building only improvements. because of my ignorence of the inner mechanics, i've just been choosing the reccomended.

As i get halfway through america (big country) i notice my research is at 10% and i still have -50 gold or so. Uh oh. So i try razing some cities to stall for gold. Dosnt work, i end up with 0% and -30 or so. Heres where the economy starts to collapse.

I run out of improvements in all the cities, so all i have left is troops. Due to lack of funds, my kill squads start to disband at an alarming rate. Everything falls apart, i become a third world nation.

So i reloaded.

So this time i planned to just raze all the cities to fund my war machine. However, the same thing happens. My economy collapses, even if i dont build the 4th conquor squad and just build improvements, because all i can build is more troops or workers. I cant build wealth or anyhting yet. In other words, im stuck.

What steps can i take to prevent/forstall this total economic collapse, and what can i do to support a large army in the future?

pottery + cottages

currency + markets

col + courthouses + forbidden palace

larger isn't always better, don't overexpand and crush your economy yadayada

units cost money in maintenance, don't use 50 when 15 will do yadayada

:)

If you want to do that, then do it post-renaissance when you have the infrastructure to support huge armies. Trust me it is still fun.

In my games I currently build around 40-60 tanks/modern armor, stealth/bombers, jet/fighters, gunships, etc. and wipe out opponent empires in a heartbeat on the replay. Fun times.

Early on your economy simply can't sustain such huge #s of troops.

Cottages are good. Capturing/founding cities with good commerce resources in there radius is good too.
