not a big fan of these, how to switch them on/off?

thank you for your answers.

In the folder Assets/Modules/Alt-Timelines edit the file MLF_CIV4ModularLoadingControls.XML, not pad will do it. Change
Code:
				<Module>
					<Directory>Steampunk</Directory>
					<bLoad>[B]1[/B]</bLoad>
				</Module>
to
Code:
				<Module>
					<Directory>Steampunk</Directory>
					<bLoad>[B]0[/B]</bLoad>
				</Module>

I did try and document this in the Players How To thread. Obviously I did not do a very good job as this is the second time I have answered the question, :sad:

I don't think it helps that in the civopedia it tells of a different way to do so (by way of moving them to another folder, like in some other mods), or it did the last time I looked (admittedly, it's been a while since I read that part of it).

That works to.

I think all alternate eras, (and specific techs) should be selectable as gameplay options. (the prehistoric and future ones should be able to be turned off/on for those other people (not me)who don't want to play them. Sometimes you just don't to play certain alternate things, sometimes you do. :)

I think alternate eras should be controllable and optional. There is no rule that says, the dark ages, an apocalypse, steam power (they had some of this is ancient times), Gunpowder, computers, artificial intelligence, space travel, alien encounters, an alien invasion, time travel, laser weapons, vaccines, or other specific technologies just Had to be developed in one specific era. Any technology that is both possible and uncertainly developable in another era, and is not part of a sequence of developed techs, should be optional (what if) and could be fun to play with/without them.
imagine a modern worldly without automobiles or computers, or a Steampunk Victorian world where computers were developed in the 18th century.

Here are some ideas.
1. Being able to start with any era one chooses, would make playtesting easier, as well.

2. Being able to turn off/on certain techs, would make gameplay more interesting. (imagine gunpowder in roman times, lasers in the 1980's, an alien invavasion in the medieval age, the apollo program being continued, a manned mars program in 2000, or Ai being developed yesterday.) some techs do not necessarily lead to others. And some other techs do not automatically guarantee a jump in eras, and can be very fun to play out of time. Imagine guilds in ancient Rome, railroads in medieval times, a feudal America, a democratic ancient egypt.

3. Making alternate eras an And/Or operation lets sets of certain technologies become available simultaneously or changes the course of gameplay, selectively. It could also be made random or have adjustable probabilities in starting game options, or menus. Imagine playing a game where a nuclear war was 90% probable, or a game where dark ages was only 25% probable but could happen anytime. (surviving that could be fun and not necessarily a nerffed game, if it was in-game selectable either on/off) you could replay the saved game with a different outcome, if you select it.

5. It would be nice to have an alternate popular Sci-fi era, with individually selectable key techs, like fighting robots in the near future, or not, or lightsabers being optional if you wanted them (in at all, or at a certain time). This could happen with or without, before or after, other eras. Modern, Transhuman, Galactic, Dimensional, why even stop there.
This way techs from Star Trek or Star Wars could be part of the game or not, randomly or by option.
Heck the future eras could be kept as plausibly realistic as possible, with the best speculation and predictions of the likely future, and the alternate future era could selectively include the science fiction, fantastic, imaginative, and popular culture stuff. They could just fit together as one wished.

It could be kept as realistic as one wanted to play by making key points optional.

Who said when a moon colony should've been possible? versus when one actually gets built. It is a question of possibility and priority.
Who says when hand lasers will be developed?

Who says when we can go back into space? And actually explore the universe?
When will we discover interstellar space travel, now or 100 years?
The same with true artificial intelligence.
When and I what order should things be possible to play?

I want to be be able to play both a Steampunk in the 1800's game, or like Neal Stephenson's great book The Diamond Age, play Steampunk of the future, in the future.
I say we want those options eventually.
We should open up how the tech trees, and alternate eras are playable,
I Think These options should be made, in menus and not just by adjusting the code. In the start options and during the game.

I was thinking something along similar lines with modules (optional on startup selections). Wouldn't be a quick and easy modification to design really but I could see the bool values selectable on start.

As for the rest of what you're talking about:
* You can already determine your start era at the beginning of the game (in fact, if you don't select a start in prehistoric it will annoyingly default to Ancient instead.)

* It would be nice to establish a maximum era selection bar for those who don't want to go past a certain age.

* As for varying the way techs can be reached, I have to say that I feel the tech tree is largely aligned to rational prerequisites and thus makes it difficult to figure out any sort of mechanism by which we could introduce such anachronisms. I won't disagree on the charm factor but how would it be done?

Is their a way to make the game on default start in the prehistoric era instead of the ancient

Don't know why you guys are having this problem. It defaults to prehistoric for me, even after playing other mods. Remember, if you do start a new game after playing other mods (and this goes for switching from ANY first mod to ANY second mod), always do a "play now" to clear the options to default if you want to later play a custom game.

Yes, if you go straight to playing a custom game from playing another mod, the "default" options are set to what you had in the old mod (for the options that exist in both mods).

This should be reposted in the Tips and Strategy Sub forum and in the Beginner's thread too.
