I am kinda a newb. And, I always do seem to tech faster than the other civs. But, it doesnt seem to be fast enough. Like, I saw a pic of something getting RailRoads by 16 something AD. Thats impressive man.

you are playing at too low of a level if you can tech significantly faster than the AI. Go up a level and trade techs with AI's, best way to get techs quicker.

Also make sure you have all worked squares around your cities roaded and libraries, universities built in all majot cities relatively close to your capital and forbidden palace

TREV is right........i have gotten modern armour at around the 1700s before.........now i am not a pro bbut try to keep the more powerful and rich nations happy with you.........once i get like 250 gold per turn only for democracy.......and that helps alot........try to sell techs and luxuries to ur allies for gold per turn........itll help u get ahead and u can keep sellning new techs every 20 turns.........

specialize in your research. Go up a tech path and trade other civs for a differnt tech. This way you only need to do half the work!

Hi Illusion

This is probably obvious but dont forget that tech, happiness, food and gold are all related. Finding more luxuries or building happiness Wonders translate into faster techs. As do economic improvements. It is vital to explore early (with any unit you have available) and secure as many luxuries as possible even if it means building a few cities too far from the capital to be really useful otherwise at this stage. Also dont forget to check the research and happiness slider every move. You can often reduce science and stay on the same number of turns, especially when getting close to a new tech. You can sometimes get the last turn before an advance with tech set to zero and just one scientist somewhere.
Try and get the Great Library. As soon (or even before you get it if you are confident) set tech to zero and let the AI spend the money on research. Save gold so you can research and build faster when Education cancels the GL.
The other vital thing is micro-management e.g not wasting time irrigating a square in despotism when it does not give you more food.
You probably know all this stuff already, anyway good luck

Regards

Yeah but... I am not good enough for a higher level yet...

Well, if you can consistantly out-tech all the AI civs, I'd say you're ready to "step-up" to the next level.:goodjob:

Illusion13, what level are you playing?

As I made my way up the different levels, I found the tech pace increases dramatically. In a recent game, I launched my SS before 1600ad (my best result ever!). The game featured 16 civs and was on Monarch.

My first experince on Chieftain was not pretty. I finally reached the Industrial Age at 2010ad. Needless to say, that was a long slow game.

Step up to the next level. You will not regret it.

I thought you tech SLOWER on a higher level...
Yeah, life is funny that way. But at a higher level, the AI has more workers and builds improvements faster. This translates into more money and more research (Libraries, etc.) for the Bad Guys (tm). As you learn more tricks for keeping up with technology, you'll find yourself moving along faster with them.
