-battery life
-low cost
-enough computer power for word processing and internet
-small size
-not so small screen-wise that it hurts my eyes to try to write a paper on it

Is that what notebookreviews recommended you?
I suggest upping to the 1.6ghz Atom if you're gonna go that way, but there's a ton of manufacturers for Subnotebooks. MSI, ASUS, etc all have some offerings and I think some have them in the 12-13" range.

I have trouble comparing Dells if only because the tech support options end up being like 30% of final cost.

Given that Atom is low power, it'd probably be ok for taking to school to do office work from the battery, rather than plugged in. But if plug-ins aren't a problem, I'd go for more power with a different cpu.
