Hi everyone! Also I agree great thread!

I have a problem though.

The exact laptop you recommend isn't sold here in the netherlands.
The 2 acer ones i have found which are as close to it I could get are the same in every way except.

The first one has a ATI Radeon HD 5470 and is 799euros

The second has an extra 500gb hard drive and has an i5 Processor 430M 2.26 GHz

Also I know enough a computers to know that the hard is slow would it be possible to stick in a SSD drive and if I did whats so good about them. I heard there supposed to be brilliant but not sure why.
I aren't fussed about hard drive space i'd say 80 gb is enough.

Almost zero random access time, with the effect that things that require your harddrive to access lots of small files are about one order of magnitude faster on a ssd. And you get a superior data transfer rate compared to notebook HDDs, but the difference is not as large as for the access time.

Why should i want a ssd

The usual workaround for the small disk size is to use the ssd for windows, applications, and the most used data and games. The rest gets onto a normal HDD. Your second laptop would be suitable for that, as it has two HDDs.

Sorry I haven't been around for a minute, I was so busy playing that I forgot to check the forums.

Ryan has Civ V on his computer and it runs all but perfectly. Between turns on huge maps it can take a good second. But graphically, everything is on high, but the anti-aliasing doesn't work (which may be a program bug?). Framerates are gorgeously high. Except for the turn pause, it runs like an old program on a new computer.

Civ 5 wise, there's no benefit to paying more for a different combo of processor and graphics card. There may be a benefit if you need your laptop for other things, but for everyday use and strategy gaming, the Acer 77xx and 75xx series are golden.

I don't know about the exchange rates or tax differences, but if 1000 Euros was in my budget, I'd pick up the 5650. I know it will do everything you need Civ 5 to do. The 5470 seems pretty weak.

A 720p HDTV is the same resolution as a 1366*768 monitor. A 1080p HDTV is the same as a 1920*1080 monitor. Most laptops sold today are 720p or 1600*900. Desktop monitors sold today are usually 1080p or a step up from that.

A dedicated graphics card will get you a lot:
-The textures will be offloaded from the system memory, which should speed app performance any time you're running a 3d game.
-DirectX 11 effects look awesome.
-Framerates will improve, and should remain steady even when your computer is doing other tasks.
-Finally, a dedicated graphics card should make streaming video a little less processor intensive.

As we've been discussing in the laptop topics, the laptop Radeon 5650 will run Civ 5 at high specs, DX11, with no AA, with incredible framerates. So the $80 - $85 desktop Radeon 5670s should be more than Civ 5 needs. You might be able to run FSAA with that, or you might need a step up, I'm not sure.

Sorry to hijack a bit but its kind of relevant and you all seem pretty knowledgeable.
Is it worth it to upgrade from the radeon 565v to the 5730 for $93 (=approx US$70)

Nope, the mobility 5650 and 5730 have almost identical specifications.

Edit: Thought it was a typo, if it really is a 565v not 5650, then the 5730 is well worth the $100 :blush:
