I think they must be. It actually retrieves data from www.civ3.com, and also from Atari when it loads.

Meh. It just takes you to civ3.com. I had hoped it would be something more interesting...
If it is legit, why has it been registered by a guy from China? Go to http://www.networksolutions.com , click on the small "whois" icon at the top, and enter civ4.com in the domain field then search.

Atari is a japanese word for "Danger". Know worldwide because of its use in the game "Go". Atari as a computer brand is history. Hasbro bought the copyrights (i think) and used it because of the known name and an excellent logo. The first game I saw with the Atari logo after a looong time was Neverwinter Nights, I think.

I always thought this would be a great way to make money, for instance after spiderman comes out buy the rights to spiderman2.com and sell it to them for a fortune because you know their will be a sequel. But the courts won't let you do it. People have rights over their creations, so if you buy spiderman2 just to sell it, you will be forced to give it to them for what you bought it.
Same thing with names. Some guy bought juliaroberts.com and tried to make her pay him a million dollars for the rights, and a judge made him give it up for like $50. But they have to prove that you're taking that domain name just to make money off that specific person, so if you have the same name as a celebrity you could buy it, and they would have to pay you a lot of money for it.
Similar thing happened to that kid, Mike Rowe, who registered the domain name MikeRoweSoft. Microsoft tried to sue him and they were unsuccessful, they ended up paying him something like $10,000 and a free X-Box.

That, or someone has bought it years ago. But in either way I'm pretty sure there isn't any money to make out if this any longer.
This trick could have worked 10 years ago, I think. Now companies are much more internet-wise.
(except record companies such as BMG or Universal that still haven't understood that CDs are over... But that's off-topic
