Here's an idea I had in the shower this morning: What if you could force a civil disorder into peace? It would involve moving a military unit into the city and selecting an option entitled, "Arrest/kill demonstators." You would arrest them in a Republic and Democracy, and kill them in other govt's. If you kill them, your reputation with other civs goes down, and that city remains peaceful, but unhappy. If you arrest them, you are called a dictator by other civs (reputation goes down) and the city stays unhappy. If you kill them the city's population could go down.

Yeah, and after that you could send the arrested guys in gulags if you are under communism, giving you extra workers for free, or giving you science bonus since you could use them as guinea pigs...

Mmmh maybe I'm going too far here. :)

Well I guess that is one way of dealing with the problem, though it seems a bit excessive to me :D

Maple, sorry to be a bore, but this idea of yours is already implemented: It's called military police - and is available under Despotism, Monarcy and Communism.

It does exactly waht you suggest - move in a number of military units and the same number of unhappy citizens (which causes civil disorder) goes to rest.

It'd be fine to have under democracy and republic as well, but it would take away some of the challenge if you removed on of the two the drawbacks of the best governments.

No he wants to kill them or arrest them so they aren't there anymore.

That makes me think of something from SMAC. When you captured an enemy base, you good completely destroy said base. However, your opinion would drop with the rest of Planet's factions because your actions were seen as genocide. Why not put that in as a disadvatage to destroying enemy cities.

MARTIAL LAW is another option missing from Civ 3.

Firaxis poorly tried to disguise martial law as military police. There are sigmificant differences between the two things.

If you want to be a cruel and despotic Presidente, and kill or jail anyone that riot against your magnificent goverment (yes, I know, it's hard to imagine that there can be any that do that), or even someone of the lot without any good reason (sorry, all your reasons are good), then you should try Tropico, that a very good game

I don't know what the beef is all about. I had little trouble with demonstrators and stayed in Democracy for 200 years. I just hand picked food producers to be entertainers, thus depriving the demonstrators of food. The old "no work, no eat" policy. I didn't want to sacrifice shield production in time of war. The city would eventually starve down to where it would be zero growth, and demonstrations would cease. Yes I wanted to jail them, but I found the Stalinistic approach more effective.

I made it through the game with rock bottom reputation among the other nations. All of them were furious with me. Big deal. I had nukes. They didn't. :p

It's hard NOT to use something that took patience, time, money and efforts to build. Something very powerful, what's more. And in a game. Not in real life.
When I have nukes, silly arguments always pop in my head, such as "Consequences, schmonsequences", "Hey, what the heck, it's just a video game", "I can always reload afterwards", "That will remind the AI of its treacherous attack in 2150 BC", and so on.

If you kill them, their family member may take their place. In fact, their family may take revenge on you.:D

I like my method better.;) I do not kill anyone. If they are unhappy, that's mean they don't work. If they don't work, they don't have money to buy food. If they don't have food to eat, they will die. It's as simple as that. Under my rule, most of my citizens are happy. If they are unhappy, they may die of starvation. Even when they died of starvation, they died happy.:)
