Humankind Game by Amplitude

I have my fingers crossed for culture-specific, but that would total 60 unique tracks, which is a lot. Endless Legend had 32 at launch, whilst Endless Space 2 had 36, so I have a feeling they will be tied to the game's eras, with maybe 5 or 6 tracks each.

I'd rather the full OST be played all the time or at least add tracks but dont stop playing old ones. I have to turn off Civ 6's music by end game because its nothing but overly bombastic orchestral music it doesnt suit the gameplay there needed to be more ambient tracks and darker tracks rather than endless triumphalism.

Civ V having music that would only play at peace or only at war worked really well in making sure the music fit the mood, no upbeat jingles while men were brought to the ground by machine guns or bomber aircraft carpet a city in explosives.

  1. Ancient Era (previously Bronze Era)
  2. Classical Era
  3. Medieval Era
  4. Early Modern Era
  5. Industrial Era
  6. Contemporary Era
I like this a lot.

EDIT: I see some confusion from others on Twitter already but I think that Early Modern is great and hope you guys don't change it back. It's great for the game you guys are going for, especially since being less Western-centric.

I like "Early Modern". None of eras were named as such by their contemporaries anyway, and it avoids cultural eurocentric terms such as "renaissance" or "enlightenment" or geographic context such as "exploration era".

I also prefer "Contemporary Era" name over "Modern", "Atomic" etc.

I’ll be honest, although I’m pleased about Ancient Era replacing Bronze Era, I’m not entirely convinced by the term “Early Modern”.

It just feels clunky and out of place among the other single-word titles, being inconsistent with the otherwise established naming convention. Furthermore, the inclusion of an “Early Modern Era” feels as though it should necessitate the existence of a “Late Modern Era” as well.

I appreciate that “Early Modern” is probably the correct term used by historians, but personally I think “Exploration Era”, “Enlightenment Era”, “Renaissance Era”, or “Colonial Era” work a lot better, and would be less confusing to the masses.

I can understand the concern about the difference between "Early Modern" and all the other single-word Era titles, but all the alternatives you suggest require that Factions be Exploring, Colonizing, or going through a Renaissance or Enlightenment. That cannot be guaranteed in any game, unless the game artificially Forces Factions into Exploration or Colonization (All Terra Maps?) or into a Renaissance or Enlightenment. That as certainly not true IRL or historically, and to do so simply produces another Fantasy Game.

"Early Modern" is the most common term for the period 1500 - 1750 CE or so used today amongst historians of the period, and the Age of Reason and Age of Enlightenment are considered to cover only a fraction of it (roughly, the late 17th, to late 18th centuries)

"Late Modern", a possibility for the period after "Early Modern", is usually considered to be 1750 to, roughly, the beginning of the 'Contemporary' or 'Post-Modern' period after 1970 - 1973. That means, by the ay, that to the modern Historian, the Industrial Era or Industrial Revolution takes place in the Late Modern Era, which is much better than having it be its own separate Era, since countries industrialized at wildly different times ranging from 1750 to 1990 and later.

I'd definitely feel more comfortable about it if the Industrial Era was renamed to "Late Modern".

Aren‘t we already post-modern in the modern day though?
And this is why I think using the term "modern" to refer to any period of time other than the present day is silly. The word "modern" is literally derived from the Latin "modo" meaning "now". It's synonymous with "contemporary"...

On an unrelated note, does anyone else find it odd that we haven't had a new Feature Focus for 3 weeks now?

Some people argue this, and it’s an interesting academic debate.

To non-historians however, and I include myself here, I think it seems quite confusing. To a layman Post-modernism is too much associated with a particular artistic movement to feel like an accurate descriptor for the current time period.

Outside an academic audience, modern means, well... now.

In German academia and every day speech we distinguish between modern and moderne (modernity) that equals from 19th century onwards and Neuzeit (1500s till today) and Frühe Neuzeit (early new time =1500s to 1700s).

I think the first dev diary video was released on a Friday, so we might see one today. I certainly hope for it.
It actually wasn't, but you were correct nonetheless!

I know that Amplitude did not stick to an exact time with their Tuesday reveals, but I am still wondering why today's reveal that might tell us if Huns or Han are in the game did not happen yet? I know that France is in kind of a "war state" but I thought that the Amplituders might still work, just from home. I hope everybody's okay.
