Diplomacy screen!

Ugh, the UI is soooo intuitive! I can't wait to try this at home!

What's morale by the way in this context?
It takes at least two whole tooltips to be explained.
Overall, it's a basically a sort of pride meter? As in, once war happens, your own people will push you to accept a disadvantageous peace treaty and the like. You can make demands to get it up.
The two AIs you play with are extremely passive and friendly so you'd need to do some toying around to have them actually start "conquering" you and put it to test.

Morale is roughly the equivalent to war weariness. Low morale means your people are demoralized about how a war is going and will be willing to accept bad terms in exchange for peace or outright surrender. High morale means the opposite that your people want to fight on. You have a morale number for each other civ. You can change your morale for a civ through trade, making demands, causing grievances etc...

The "crisis" tab is your list of grievances with the civ.

I really like the diplomacy screen. The two leaders will talk to each other when you propose or accept deals. The banter feels very natural way. I like the grid format for the treaties. It is a nice way to view what types of treaties you have with a civ. I like that you can customize your relationship. You can be very open, sharing maps, trading everything etc.. or trade everything but only reveal your capital or only trade luxuries but have open borders.

Morale is how willing your people are to fight against that other player. If they cause grievances, you can demand compensation, and if they refuse to do so then you gain Morale. Also, if you declare war then you will lose Morale, and each successful military operation gives Morale. If you drain your opponent's Morale then they will be forced to accede to your demands.

And I believe that Militaristic Factions start with higher morale or have some kind of morale 'bonus', which makes, as it should be, fighting them a little bit tougher in the long run - unless you are very successful, they can outlast you.

I assumed the Empire State Building and other famous skyscrapers have not turned up in Civ due to copyright issues but here is Humankind with it. Did Sega get its wallet out to get it in the game? Or does Firaxis just not like Skyscraper wonders?

The demo sounds great but my internet will be much too slow I imagine hopefully someone can show off the stuff in it sometime.

actually, the "Freedom of panorama" in USA is ok for buildings only ;) And totally ok for inside and outside of buildings in Australia (The Sidney Opera is in Civ !)

I'm always sad than modern architecture is just not recognised as the ancient ones
I always dreamed of having early skyscraper as industrial era wonder (The Guaranty Building, Chicago, Louis Sullivan.) or more contemporary ones ( Brasilia Cathedral, Brazil, Oscar Niemeyer. The Lotus Temple, India, Fariborz Sahba. Le Louvre, Paris. Gugghenheim museum, New York, Frank Lloyd Wright. Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.) .... Well so much, so much idea ... in all different stylse, even in constructivism / brutalism architectural style there is some which deserve to be highlitghted.

Well, you got plenty of answers already... So now how are we going to get a truthful survey out of CivLuvah? Did you all think about that when answering him? :p
Fame and Diplomacy are the big focus of this OpenDev, so "Did you understand Morale?" is a good chunk of the survey.

I believe that is the Hittites only, not all Militarist cultures, because it is the Legacy Trait.

I finally got to play the OpenDev at Stadia by the way. I couldn't remember any question about whether I understood morale, but I might need a few more playthroughs to get that question.

Was wondering, @Catoninetales_Amplitude, if you could explain to us where those cosmetics bonuses from pre-ordering and digital deluxe version will be used, in forums only or actually in-game ?

  • Victor Hugo Avatar Set - Adds Victor Hugo Set to customize your Avatar
  • “Inspirational” Avatar Personality - Adds the “Inspirational” Personality to customize your Avatar
  • Boudicca Avatar Set - Adds Boudicca Set to customize you Avatar
  • Player Profile Pre-Purchase Decoration - Adds an exclusive Decoration to customize your Player Profile
  • Player Profile Symbol Set - Adds 10 exclusive Symbols to customize your Player Profile
And those that apply in-game, will they be apparent even in SP games ? or mostly in MP ?

Just want to set my expectations to the right place following my purchase ;-) I'm assuming avatar's in game, the profiles thingy's forum only, but that's based on absolutely nothing !

Thanks

Yes, all those bonuses apply in game. They're ways to customize the avatar you see in the civilization screen and diplomacy, as well as the icon representing your civilization (where we are currently using the culture specific placeholders).

Awesome. Thx for the quick response. This makes it much more interesting, even if still cosmetic ;-)

There is one thing I wanted to discuss, utterly disconnected from recent news, but I have forgot to discuss it when that culture was announced. Which is embarassing fact seeing as I am Polish myself.

@Catoninetales_Amplitude

Why is "Polish" culture in the early modern era not "Polish - Lithuanian"? We got "Austro - Hungary" in the industrial, so personal union of two peoples is not unreasonable culture.

Early modern era in this game seems roughly to be from 1453/1492 to 1789. Poland and Lithuania were literally the singular, united country since 1569, for over two hundred years of this era. But even before that, Poland and Lithuania were in very close personal union since 1385. By the late 15th and early 16th century they were already very well integrated. Jagiellon dynasty kings (ruling from 1385 until 1570) were ethnically Lithuanian. A lot of "Polish" nobles, commanders and yes iconic winged hussars were Lithuanian (or Belarussian) in origin. Polish and Lithuanian cultures were in fact so close in this entire period that it's often impossible or nonsensical to even differentiate what was the exact nationality of the person in question. And the culture in game seems to explicitely refer to the imperial late period of Commonwealth (hussars were a late 16th century formation), no to the 15th century when the independent Poland still existed.

So, my question is again: why is this culture "Polish" in the early modern era? This was not Polish culture. This was Polish - Lithuanian culture of Polish - Lithuanian dual state.

In fact, if anything, it's "Austro - Hungarian" culture which should be less convincing addition - it was a state lasting 51 years. PLC was lasting 226 years, and Polish - Lithuanian union in the wide sense was lasting 410 years. They were also far more interwined and integrated that Austrian and Hungarian cultures in this period of nationalism (well the fact is Hungarians went Independent way the first chance they got).

So yes, I'd actually gently campaign for changing it to the "Polish - Lithuanian" culture for early modern period, as I find it
1) More correct for EM age
2) More fitting EM age's spirit
3) Consistent with Austro - Hungary
4) Making room for the separate medieval Lithuanian culture and medieval or modern Polish culture.

(Fun fact, my home city Lublin is where the ultimate union was signed in 1569, and my high school has been named after the "Union of Lublin")

"It's just cosmetic!" was never an argument I bought into. If the way our characters/units/whaever look in a game didn't affect our enjoyment, they wouldn't sell.

Honestly for a 4x strategy game that's a good game design philosophy to have, and it shows! I listened to the Unity podcast episode with Romain, and from what I can remember (might be wrong!) there was a blurb when he said that often in the genre art design is almost an afterthought.

The only model I dislike in pre-order bonus even if "only cosmetics", are the ones which are exclusive ... forever. If you miss it, you will never have it.
