Hi All.

I just came upon this awesome mod a few months ago. I have played a few different patches of v12 and have had alot of fun.

There is something that is bugging me though....

Hybrid Forests under the Hybrid Civic. The way I interpret the bonus of the Hybrid civic is that it will give +1 minerals to a Hybrid forest on top of the +1 mineral that a standard forest already gets. Is this correct, or is a Hybrid forest (under hybrid civic) the same as a forest except for the + planet value?

If the second assertion is true then a Hybrid forest under a non-hybrid civic will actually give -1 minerals compared to a standard forest.

Just wanted this cleared up in my mind, as at the moment I thought there was something wrong with the current patch version.

Hybrid forests don't give any minerals over a non-hybrid forest under hybrid ecology.

The +planet is useful, though, since it can provide a lot of psi potential and whatever the heart thing is, which helps a lot with worms.

Hybrid forests can also be grown on more terrain types than a non-hybrid forest. (Or fungus for that matter.)

As for hybrid forests under a non-hybrid ecology, there is no way to grow the forests to not use an ecology, so the only way you'd get these forests ot grow is to constantly switch ecologies (which likely is a somewhat wasteful strategy), or by conquering a hybrid player. In the second case, you'll probably just have to terraform it away (though I haven't actually had this happen in game, so am not sure. It might be that the hybrid forest decays back into a forest if you leave it long enough.)

I know this is unrelated but does anyone else feel that hybrid is a little underpowered.
You get -2 Health in your cities and only that +1 hamers from it.

On the other hand Biodomes and Teraformed give you massive bonuses.

Well, it appears that you DON'T get the +1 hammers from it at all!!!! (Compared to normal Forest).

In that case, yes Hybrid does feel a little weak given the 2 :yuck:

It seems that the real bonus is in the reduced maintenance (number of bases) an also that all the forests that turn hybrid (as well as the ones you plant) give 1.25 Planet in the city - per plot.

Still you also do get the disadvantage of no mag tubes. With the standard restrictions on mag-tube building being tough enough, it is almost impossible to have a decent Mag-tube system when you turn Hybrid. Forests with Mag tubes already will lose Mag tubes when they 'convert' to Hybrid.

It is very much a 'meh' feeling...the Hybrid civic. The wording is not very clear and it misled me into creating a hybrid society, only not to get the primary benefit I was after! (+1 minerals per [hybrid] forest)

This said, what are mag tubes supposed to be anyway?
Why can't we build tunnels or pass them through the HF?

Conquered Hybrid Forests will stay under "Biodomes" (unless you terraform them manually away), while "Terraformed" turns them slowly into Forests.

You can rely on Psi Gates for mobility instead.

Not allowing magtubes on fungus/hybrid forest is for gameplay reasons. For a roleplay reason, you could for instance assume the strong magnetic fields generated by the magtube irritate Planet.

Maniac,

Thanks for your reply. Mag tubes are abit of a pain but I don't mind the way you have them implemented - it forces the player to think and to make decisions.

However you still didn't address my primary concern....the Hybrid Civic is still misleading in my view. I expected +1 minerals from a hybrid forest plot under hybrid when compared to a standard forest. I interpreted that way and so did my brother...I am sure others would have as well.

Over-all Hybrid forests/fungus seems somewhat weak when compared to the mid-late game SMAC versions....which is somewhat disappointing....I loved have a 'green empire' with Gaians in SMAC that eventually converted to a 'red empire' (I loved the Gaian food bonus).

Regardless I still enjoy playing Green in this mod even though it is weaker then SMAC.

Also remember that you expend less resources fighting Planet and the mindworms in that they for the most part leave you alone while other factions must continually ward them off.

I don't know what more I can say:

1) I disagree Hybrid is underpowered
2) Your expectation about Hybrid Forests was wrong. All the relevant info about these features is in the Datalinks. I don't see how I could improve on that.
