Depending on your computer. Overoll best mods are wery slow. Rhye civilization - best balanced mod take from5 to 15 minutes per turn on my computer. With slow computer you may want to check Rhye civilization small map(Clash of Empiers). If you want a lot of tech try Rise and Rule (RAR).
For modern war with carriers, missiles and jets - Cold War Deluxe (TCW). That's the three mods which I've played.

There are some other which I plan to play if I'll have time :
Warhammer, Master of Mirror, Rise and Fall of Roman Empire, Pentagenesis, Ancient Mediterranian

Another thing to consider besides computer speed is how much RAM you have. If you only have 126MB, you'll have problems playing some of the mods, like RaR and Warhammer, especially on large and huge maps.

First, make sure you have the latest patch in any version you plan on playing. IF youa re getting conquests, your first order of business is to download patch 1.22.

This will help the base game. In addition, many of the mods require you to have 1.22.

for modern warfare, i'll gladly pimp my TCW (The Cold War Deluxe) scenario.

it has everything and i mean everything. the full fury of land, sea and air plus 30 different civs to choose from. 2 eras of techs and about 300 total units.

of course, there are other scenarios out there that are excellent. Rocoteh's WW2 Global is awesome as is the Barbarosa and TGW scenarios. Plotinus' Rood&Dragon seems like a well-made scenario as well. if you like the turn-of-the-century/pre WW1 era then you might like my Age of Imperialism scenario.
