I am your slave! :)

How dare they spill the holy Toxic coffee beans!
BTW Raliuven, don't forget to give those Hittite cities to the Maya. The Toxic Priests are starting to wonder if it'll ever happen.

I know! And it takes 24 slaves to clean that stuff up! Joining the Byzantine citizens is coming!

Can you post the save?

I am going to post the 331-340 & 341-350 Turns and then everything will be current. I will post the save at the 350 Turn save, which should be 1770AD. That is far as I have played to this point. :D

The Dutch must be gifted some useless technology that nobody has any use for anymore, for such is the will of Toxic.

Orders Completed this Set:
1. Build a Coastal fortress in every coastal city.

Part 1
Spoiler :

By 1705AD a new American Ambassador had arrived at, Smilin’ Bob. After a brief conversation the Trade Advisor sought out Hannibal with a smile. “Great Hannibal, the Americans have suffered the loss of their saltpeter. It would seem that they were gaining this resource from the Hittites in trade but after we pillaged their second source of salt the Hittites were unable to sustain this trade. It would appear that the Americans will need to do without for the remainder of history!”

Hannibal found this to be great news indeed. But that was not all. The Domestic Advisor and Military Advisor appeared next. It was the Domestic Advisor that spoke first. “Great Hannibal, it has been reported that all of our coastal cities now have mighty coastal fortress that can protect us from bombardment by enemy ships! This is a marvelous development!”

1705ADFinalCoastalFortresBuilt.jpg

Hannibal paused. “Who ordered that?”

“The great priests of CELTICEMPIRE demanded their construction, great lord.” The Military Advisor said calmly. “They determined after dropping many ambassadors from the highest towers that firing them out of cannons would be a much better experiment. By luck one of them struck a small fishing vessel out at sea and sunk the poor fellow. That gave them the idea for these monstrosities.”

“You have your doubts?” Hannibal asked.

“I do not question the gods, great lord, but it seems to me that unless a ship sails past the fortress with a broadside we haven’t a chance of hitting them.” The Military Advisor shrugged. What could be done? "But they are pretty cool to look at. I don't know why but they just feel . . . right."

The Trade Advisor approached once more. “Lord Hannibal, we have lost our supply of silks from Spain as our current deal has expired. I would suggest that we trade Isabella the knowledge of Banking for her silks, world map, 69 pieces of gold and tribute of 18 pieces of gold for the next 20 budgeting cycles. It is quite literally all they have.”

“I do not like these tributes. We always seem to be cheated in these matters. But as we would probably give her all of this without the tribute, it is fair. We should reduce our demand to 15 pieces of gold so that Isabella is not deprived of her entire fortune and gets made at us and declares war.”

The deal was made and gold began to flow in the Carthage’s treasury.

On the ESC Old Man Iron saw a chance to break the stalemate with the Hittites. Four bands of Hittite Longbows (the 91st, 93rd, 97th and 99th 2Ps Longbow formations) were advancing on the Fortress of Solitude as well as one band of Mayan Knights under the nominal control of the Ajaw of Coba. With POP’s Elite Rangers outside of the Coba, however, the Ajaw had bigger problems.

OMIA struck across the hills and destroyed the 99th Longbows and then, crossing the hills, destroyed the Obsidian Knights of Coba. The approach now well under control, the Carthaginian cavalry and knights flooded the field. The Jagged Knights destroyed the 91st Longbows ; the Knights of Charlemagne took the 97th Longbows and the Black Guard the 93rd Longbows. The Hittites fought bravely and several volleys actually caused harm to the heavy armored attackers. But the enveloping movement was just too much for them to withstand. The formations shattered and all of the units were destroyed.

Much of 1710AD was spent clean up the barbarian uprisings and much gold was collected. But the time had also come to assault Coba. The city was defended primarily by 4,000 handpicked muskets that served the Ajaw of Coba as personal guards. Seeing the massive force moving upon the city the Ajaw was holding nothing back. POP’s Elite Rangers, with the divine grace of their god, made the first assault to push the strongest units aside for the weaker cavalry and knights. Storming over the battlements the Rangers suffered serious casualties and Hannibal feared for the health of the escorts.

His worries were well placed. The Hessian Company was easily driven off by the Sapphire Muskets of Coba; they didn’t come even close to dislodging the veteran muskets that poured death into the tightly packed ranks of horses. The Order of the Dragon made the next attempt and faired little better, the company being systematically reduced to less than 25% strength for only minor gains. But the armor had been cracked and the Order of the Elephant used that to break the Sapphire Muskets. The Ajaw attempted to lead a rally but it was too late. The city wall was breeched and Carthaginian warriors exploded into the city of their hated enemy. The city was razed and two new slave bands joined Carthage, the Mayan36-37.

The Hittite 2nd 3Ax Spearmen formation had also wondered too close to POP’s Elite Rangers and the Knights of the White Mountain were sent to dispatch them. The spearmen were surprised by the sudden attack and easily overwhelmed by the elite heavy cavalry. The Hittite52-53 bands were collected and added to the growing caravan.

In 1715AD Hannibal receives a new gift. William of the Dutch motioned over one of his Carthaginian neighbors (i.e. guards) and explained that the Netherlands had to, most unfortunately, declare war upon Carthage, for their American masters had bid it so. William also explained that he was a bit upset that Carthage had executed his ambassador in 1700AD and was now lodging a protest.

1715ADDutchDOW.jpg

Hannibal had a good chuckle when he received the message. He summoned his advisors so that they could have a good laugh too. He was even more pleased when his Domestic Advisor explained that Carthage had entered a new ‘age’ of civilization.

1715ADNewAgerewrite.jpg

They were now free to pollute the air and water until the Modern Age, when the EPA would make them pay through the nose to clean it all up. Hannibal was excited about this new age but decided he would stop drinking the water. The café’s all applauded, however. Now they could simply bottle the polluted river water and sell it as a delicacy.

“And what shall we research next?” Hannibal asked with excitement.

“This is difficult, Lord Hannibal. If we learn steam power so we can construct rails this will speed up our invasion and domination of the world. But if we research medicine we may then learn sanitation and this will greatly increase our research as our cities grow.” The Science Advisor explained.

“Lord Hannibal, we must also remember to construct our fleet.” The Military Advisor said. “With our knowledge of Magnetism we may now build Galleons and Frigates. A Galleon will be able to transport the Defenders to the ESC which will increase the speed of our invasion. Frigates will help us clear away those pests on our coast and help us dominate the seas.”

Hannibal thought hard on this. He also knew that at some point he could ‘assist’ the scientific nations to learn new technologies and then trade would gain him whatever he did not have. Hannibal thought hard on this and decided that Steam Power took precedence. He ordered it to be so.

What concerned him more was that the Chinese had compromised the LoD by planting the city of Yangchow to encompass the Carthaginian forts under their influence.

1715ADChineseOutrage.jpg

The Chinese had 25 more years before Hannibal cracked their worthless skulls.

Outside of Tarsus, the Hittite capital, the 100th 2Ps Longbow formation was attempting to block the approach of OMIA and his escorts. The Longbows had extended their line across the desert approaches, leaving the mountains and hills. This was not a sound tactic; they should have gained the heights of the hills to give them a greater range. The Knights of Night saw no reason for flare on this attack. A hard charge would disperse them. The 100th put up a healthy scrap, however, and wounded more than half of the Knights. They then gained the hills overlooking Tarsus and began to bind their wounds. Then men grumbled that after all of their losses and service they were still not considered ‘elite’.

OMIA pressed the attack on Tarsus in 1720AD. A line of 2,000 veteran muskets held the city and the Old Man knew that it would require the army to dislodge them. The Knights stormed the city, suffering the heavy fire of the muskets on the approach. The muskets, unable to maintain their rate of fire and running low on ammunition, were forced to retreat. As their ranks began to break, the Old Man drove his army through to the outskirts of the city. Mursilis had ordered anyone that could handle a spear to be sent to the city trenches. These poor people were the 4th and 6th Auxillery 3Ax Spears.

The Red Knight quickly overran the position of the 4th though the people fought hard for their homes, inflicting wounds upon many horses and rendering the Red Knights combat ineffective until they could receive reinforcements. But the flank had been turned and the 6th were clumsy and could only do so much to stop the advance of the Stainless Steel Hawks. Their lines collapsing, the people fell back to a final position at the city hall. Phaedo’s Pride drove the attack home while the remaining Carthaginian units put fire to the city and gathered the remaining citizens into slaves. Tarsus was no more. A new band of miners (destined for the now lost saltpeter resources) was captured and added to the slaves. These would be the Hittite55-58.

POP’s Elite Rangers captured the Mayan38 slave band outside of Mayapan and overran the Ruby Pikes under the command of the Halach Uinic, slaying the commanding general in combat. The Diamond Pikes of Mayapan, however, remained and the Ajaw took personal control of their ranks. The Ranger’s escorts pillaged on their way through the countryside to join the army outside of Mayapan. The city was invested and would soon be destroyed.

Things, however, had become somewhat difficult for Carthage. The Americans had landed a regiment of muskets (the 26th New York) and the US 2nd Reconnaissance Cavalry to the east of Caseyboy97’s Asylum. The unfortunate worms had come across the landing but could not escape. It was likely the US 2nd Cav would run them down before they could escape.

1715ADAmericanLanding.jpg

Hannibal had decided that it was time for there to be peace with the Hittites. With the destruction of Tarsus, Marsilis had made his capital in Emar, a city as far from the LoD as possible. His ambassador was wiling to give up the cities of Tyrana, Quirigua and Adana for peace. This would effectively remove the Hittites from Carthage’s list of enemies! The deal was made. They would receive a 100 year respite. At the same time, Hannibal ordered more forces out of Snakehead Mountain to begin the assault to knock France out of the war while OMIA once more terrorized the Portuguese into submission. All surrendered cities were immediately disbanded.

At the end of the diplomatic rounds, Joan came crawling back to the palace of Carthage. She could not send an ambassador because she had no one left to send. “Great Hannibal. It is clear to use now that going to war with you was a mistake. You have destroyed all of our defenses and cut through our people as though through paper. We beg that you allow us to live and let us retreat our forces.”

Hannibal smiled. Now the French wished to be released. Excellent! “We have had to expend resources to destroy your lands, Joan. What will you give us to allow you to withdraw?”

“Great Hannibal, we are willing to surrender the cities of Besancon and Amiens as well as all 5 pieces of our gold. Please consider this proper retribution.”

Hannibal considered this and then smiled. This would give him time to marshal his strength against the Portuguese. A deal was struck. He would destroy them in another 100 years.

Part 2
Spoiler :

In 1725AD things grew worse. The Portuguese galleys off the coast of Amsterdam dropped their cargo. The Portuguese landed the 20th Lancer Regiment (Knights) and the 29th Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry. The Dutch landed the 5th Dutch Assault Archers.

1725ADDutchandPortugueseLandings.jpg

This was an impressive coordinated amphibious landing. It would be difficult for Carthage to repulse all of them because they had left their core lightly guarded to continue the attack on the ESC.

First Carthage’s newly gained cities were immediately abandoned. This done, the French cities were now primarily in their rocky and mountainous homeland. They would not grow much in the next 100 years – assuming the French did not go ‘stupid’ and attempt to attack again.

The Mayans sent the Jacinth Cavalry of Uaxactun to attack the retreating wounded Carthaginian units. The cowards tried to forge the river before the combined might of 2,700 heavy cavalry and 900 knights. They were smartly rebuked and the Knights of Saint George drove the message home by slaying the few Jacinth Cavalry that attempted to escape.

The first issue to resolve was the mess on the mainland. The Summer Knights, an elite band that had gained recognition hunting barbs in the Netherlands assaulted the Portuguese 20th Lancer Regiment (Knights). The assault was executed perfectly and the 20th Lancers were annihilated as they attempted to move off the beach. The Summer Knights reported few loses. The second attack was performed by the Return of the Black Ravens. The unfortunate 5th Dutch Assault Archers were the focus of the attack. This would secure the landing area and remove any possible counterattack. The best that could be accomplished would be some pillaging and Carthage had more than enough labor to repair that damage.

The Return of the Black Ravens closed as the Dutch Assault Archers cleared the beach and started to unpack their bows. Many of them were soaked and useless. The Ravens fell upon them without mercy. Only a handful of arrows ever left their bows and no appreciable damage was done to the Ravens. This spelled the end for the joint Portuguese/Dutch invasion.

At the same time the first Frigates and Galleons were being turned out of the Sparthaginian harbors. The first Galleon was given the name ICS Justice of Sparthage GA-01 after the many naval battles that had been won by the priests of Sparthage.

1725ADJusticeofSparthage.jpg

This new galleon was immediately sent to pick up the Defenders from their exile upon the Persian island.

Two Frigate had also been completed and more were being produced in every Sparthaginain port. These Frigates were the resurrected ICS Kyoto’s Destruction FA-01 and ICS Charge of Aabraxan FA-02.

1725ADFirstFrigate.jpg

The unfortunate Worms fell prey as expected to the US 2nd Recon Cav, but Hannibal hoped that this would give Carthage the opportunity to destroy the 26th New York Regiment of Muskets and capture their supply train before they could set up a forward invasion point.

The newly formed Last Action Crusaders were already close to the landing point and attacked the 1,500 Muskets of 26th New York before they could become established. It was with great surprise that the sword wielding crusaders managed to sneak into the enemy lines. The musketmen were busy assisting the supply caravan secure their horses for the night when the crusaders exploded into their camp. Without any room to bring their deadly muskets into action, the sword wielding maniacs chopped them into pieces. Hannibal, amused, gave the crusaders the honors of an elite band, though it may be short lived.

1725ADLastActionElite.jpg

The 2nd Recon Cav had suffered minor wounds while running down the Worms and would soon be back. But now the Black Hats were approaching from the north and the Trolls were approaching from the south. The 2nd Cav would be caught in the middle in addition to any new knights that were trained.

On the ESC POP’s Elite Rangers overcame the Diamond Pikes of Mayapan with a general assault. The Ajaw of Mayapan was captured alive, though wounded. In spite of an attempt to save his life, he died two days later. The city was razed and its people scattered, but a band of cowboys were found in the city and were quickly pressed into Carthaginian service as Mayan39. The general advance on the new Mayan capital of Palenque began. The city of Uaxactun would be left to block up the Hittites, for now.

The 2nd Recon Cav did return and their attack upon the Last Action Crusaders and, not caught off guard this time, quickly destroyed the crusaders, riding in circles around them until they killed everyone. A last moment rally to breakout of the encirclement brought the crusaders into contact with the surprised cavalry and many men and horses were cut down. This action was too late to save them, however.

It did, however, put the wounded Cavalry within range of the Black Hats. The knights showed no mercy to the men that had massacred their comrades. The Black Hats suffered some wound but the Cavalry had no hope. They were hunted men and had little sleep and were running out of provisions. The outcome was almost inevitable.

The final mainland battle was against the Portuguese 29th Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry. They had moved against Carthage’s slave camps and didn’t even bother to pillage as they moved. That was very considerate of them, but the Return of the Black Ravens took issue with them anyway. Once more the Ravens prevailed without any significant wounds, the Portuguese, believing they were moving into ripe lands to pillage and would have the support of thousands of slaves, were marching in formation. The Ravens destroyed the brigades as they came forward, defeating them in detail.

Thus the invasion of the mainland was over. Now that Sparthage was producing true warships, the Frigates with their fast movement and powerful cannons would control the seas.

The first battle for Sparthages’ new navy was between the ICS Charge of Aabraxan FA-02 and the invading galleys of the Netherlands. The battle was brief, the Charge unleashing long range cannon fire upon the Netherlands. The only damage when the doomed galleys turned into the fight and charged, ramming the Charge. This did not change the outcome of the battle, however. The Netherland fleet was sent to the bottom.

1730ADChargegoesElite.jpg

In honor of this great victory (and against Hannibal’s favorite long term punching bag) the Charge was acknowledged as an elite warship.

The cavalry and knights covering the retreat, their task done, raced ahead to join with POP’s Elite Rangers and the invasion of the Mayans. All save for the Ghosts of the Pale Riders. Witnessing the American 3rd US Recon Cav moving towards defunct LoD, broke away and attacked the cavalry, destroying the better armed cavalrymen by sneaking across a river thought to be too swollen to attempt. The Ghosts suffered serious wounds after the surprise ended. They began their retreat back towards the LoD and everyone prayed they could make the journey.

OMIA also departed its camp with escorts and began to move towards Portugal.

With time invested in Steam Power, Hannibal hatched a plot with his Advisors.

“Great Hannibal, the time has come for us to make a trade with the unfortunate ‘scientific’ civilizations in an attempt to inspire their creativeness. We may be able to entice them to give up their knowledge with the long list of things we will not give them.” The Trade Advisor explained. “With the amount of time we have spent investing in Steam Power, we may be able to get a trade from one of them – or at least reduce our own research time until they will trade.”

“How can we be sure that they will learn new technologies just for entering a new age?” Hannibal asked, a little confused.

“Godly Hannibal, it is as certain as the sun rises. For some unknown reason, these civilizations have great ‘insights’ at the beginning of a new age. It is called a ‘civ trait’ and is thus 100% reliable.” The Scientific Advisor said.

"What are our 'civ traits'?" Hannibal inquired, curious.

"I believe we are Belligerent and Decedent, Lord Hannibal." The Domestic Advisor responded. "These traits allow us to destroy entire civilizations without the slightest pity and claim must unneeded land as ours even though we never intend to use it. It also allows us to leave our natural resources untouched while plundering those of the remainder of the world without any nagging twinges of shame."

This sounded right to Hannibal so he inquired no further. Hannibal sensed that the Science Advisor had been a little hesitant, however. “What could go wrong with this?”

“Great Hannibal, there is a chance that none of them will bother with the knowledge of Steam Power. They may all learn only Nationalism or Medicine.”

“Even if they do, Great Hannibal,” Interrupted the Trade Advisor, “That will make a trade easier with that technology and save us time anyway. The chances are good that we will benefit regardless.”

Weighing these things carefully, Hannibal agreed to make the trades. The trades would also involve the civilizations giving Carthage their world maps and all of their outstanding gold. It also involved making peace with Persia, which was acceptable because their lands had already been completely pillaged. Xerxes would never be anything more than he current was, locked in a prison of his own making called Bactra.

The trades were made beginning with the Byzantines. Theodora’s people had researched knowledge of Nationalism. That didn’t do any good and Theodora would not trade anything for this knowledge. Next came Xerxes. Peace was given and luck was with Hannibal because Xerxes’ people rightfully learned the secrets of Steam Power! Unfortunately they Xerxes would not trade this knowledge for anything Hannibal could offer. Cursing, the next deal was made with Sumeria. This time fortune smiled down on Hannibal. Sumeria also learned the secrets of Steam and now a trade WAS possible!

Xerxes was willing to give up the knowledge for as little as Democracy, Musical Theory and Chivalry (which would do him no good because he would never acquire Iron or Horses, let alone both). The Trade Advisor approached Theodora but she would not give up this knowledge for anything that Carthage could offer. This was actually a good thing since it meant no one else was likely to buy it either (at least Hannibal hoped so).

This done, Hannibal ordered two new things. To the Science Advisor he ordered the research for Medicine to that Sanitation could be researched. He then ordered for rails to be applied across the mainland, starting with the area around Amsterdam so that the city could be as large as possible! More citizens meant more money for research! Railing could begin almost immediately – several sources of coal were readily available!

In 1735AD the Mayans and Byzantines did something crazy. They signed an embargo against Carthage, as if Carthage wished to trade with them? Now Spain was a different story. :D

1735ADEmbargo.jpg

The first item of business was to establish a coal colony.

1735ADCoalColony.jpg

This done, Carthage could start railing across the world! Railing began in earnest and Carthage had enough slaves to rail great swaths of land. A quick review of the world, including news from the spies provided by his Trade Advisor, it was known that America had the means to build rails and had already acquired the knowledge, probably from the Sumerians. In fact, the Sumerians now had Military Tradition, which was good news because Hannibal could now extort it from them. Their peace treaty would be active for only 10 more years.

More importantly, ICS Kyoto’s Destruction FR-01 had found its first victim on the high seas. A small fleet of Mayan Galleys was approaching the mainland, offering itself up for destruction. The flotilla of frigate engaged the Mayan galleys which used the same tactics as the Netherlanders – they made to ram. While the Kyoto dispatched most of the galleys this way, a few managed to get through and damage the frigates.

1735ADKyoto.jpg

They would make for New Crobuzon for repairs and to join with the new shipmates that were being constructed.

The remainder of 1735AD was spent working on the railroad and moving units into position. In 1740 things began to happen once more. The most important thing was that peace between Carthage and China was set to expire. :D

Hannibal immediately dialed up Mao and explained that Carthage could not tolerate the presence of Chinese cities in Carthaginian lands. They had broken the golden rule – do not settle where Carthaginian blood has been spilt.

When the Chinese Ambassador was brought before Hannibal he actually thought that it was a joke.

1740ADChineseDOW.jpg

The ‘battles’ opened with the elimination of Yangchow, the city that had compromised the LoD. The Krondorian Lancers*, long in the service of Carthage, was trusted to remove the 2,000 men of the People’s 71st Riders from the city. Unfortunately the attack did not go as planned. The well trained and highly mobile Riders easily remained just out of range of the heavy cavalry, picking at them as they tried to reach the city. The Lancers tried to retreat but could not withdraw. The loss of the Lancers was deeply mourned all through Carthage.

The Toxic Knights, infuriated by the loss of the Toxic Fort and the death of such and elite band, charged into the formation of Riders. This time the Riders were unable to maneuver away from the knights, for the Toxic Knights had received divine might from their god and knew what to do. Breaking into two groups, they ‘pinched’ the Riders between them, squeezing the life from them. Then they squeezed the life out of Yangchow. There was no gold in the city coffers.

The undefended cities of Kaifeng and Paoting were also sacked. When Kaifeng was destroyed there was a fleet of caravels in the harbor. These were burned along with the city. The Tusks of Justice* destroyed Paoting while the Knights of the Thistle retook Mongoose Mountain.

A quick diplomatic check revealed the Henry would already surrender three cities for peace. The Mayans were willing to give up military tradition, all of their gold (213gp) and their world map. Unfortunately Hannibal also discovered that the Mayans had learned the secrets of Nationalism. That would make things more difficult. :(

OMIA was also in position to overrun Emertia, a Portuguese source of iron. Reconnaissance of the city revealed the 8th Infantry Regiment of Muskets. These were 2,000 veteran muskets, well trained and armed. The Old Man knew that the army would need to go first. The knights quickly encircled the city and though the led elements took punishment from the muskets the army pushed past, flanking the line and rolling them back to the awaiting pikes of the 13th Infantry Regiment of Pikes, a regular army regiment. The Black Guard, a well trusted Carthaginian unit, took the lead. Initially taking great losses and they charged the pike phalanx, the line sudden crumbled as the pikemen saw the line of knights and cavalry working their way towards the city.

Throwing down the pike, the men ran. Most were gathered up with the citizens of the city and gathered into three new slave bands (one of the bands was formed from some of the iron miners that had fled into the city. These were the Portuguese 27-29.

In 1745AD word reached Carthage that the might Tusks of Justice*, fresh from their victory in Paoting, were attacked and overrun by the Mayan Black Sapphire Cavalry of Uaxactun and killed. Only a few survivors managed to escape with the unit’s battle flags. The company, in it is present form at least, was no more.

But it was with a measure of revenge that the Onyx Cavalry of Uaxactun attacked the Iron Lances* through the marshy swamp and paid for their arrogance with their lives. The Iron Lances*, though severely wounded, gave chase and hunted the retreating men of the Onyx Cavalry as they tried to move back through the swamp. Carthage considered this a consolation for the loss of their valiant men of the Tusks of Justice.

A final unit moved out of the fog, the Portuguese 55th Lancer Regiment (Knights). These appeared over the desert wastelands that formally belonged to Tarsus.

The Wild Geese were selected to fall upon the Black Sapphire to revenge the Tusks. The wounded cavalry didn’t stand a chance against the fully equipped and well rested knights and easily fell, unable to even contest their crossing of the Snake River. The job done, the Wild Geese joined the Knights of the Thistle upon Mongoose Mountain.

The Outriders, assisted by the Stainless Steel Hawks, attacked the 55th Lancer Regiment. While the Hawks demonstrated on the left flank the Outriders struck, driving the 55th Lancers back into the desert. Those that escaped only did so because they threw down their swords and shields, shed heavy armor and escaped with speed into the hills. Without weapons or armor these men were no longer a threat to Carthage.

The most important event of 1745AD was the assault upon Kaminaljuyu, one of the Mayan’s largest cities. The city was protected by only a shell of pikemen, the Amethyst and Crystal Pikes, 4,000 men in all. The open attack was executed by the Knights of St George. The Knights stormed the battlements, pushing the Amethyst pikes from the trenches that secured the city and taking the southern fort that protected the hill approaches. This sudden collapse of their defenses caused the Ajaw to push the Crystal Pikes forward, rushing them to the attack. The Knights, however, would require fresh mounts and replacements before they could offer battle again.

With no other elite companies of knights available, POP’s Elite Rangers took the next attack, countering the move of the Ajaw and filling the trenches with Carthaginian soldiers before the Mayans could regain their foothold. When the Crystal Pikes arrived they were rudely repulsed though the Rangers suffered some light wounds. The Ajaw of Kaminaljuyu died during the assault.

The Halach Uinic took command and rallied the retreating troops, managing to turn roughly 1,200 men back to face the final attack that would break the city. The Black Devils were selected for the offensive. They were commanded to seize the city gates at all costs. The charge succeed spectacularly and the defenses collapsed. The Halach Uinic was captured during the attack and the remaining defenders faded melted away.

Those that could be captured were added to the population and made into the Mayan40-44 slave bands. Unfortunately, though the remainder of the army had time to gather, the Black Devils remained exposed to attack.

The loss of this city was a virtual death blow to the Mayans. Even so, the Mayans refused to give up any cities or Nationalism for peace, not that Hannibal would have let them have it yet anyway.

In other news, the Crobuzon Knights captured a band of Chinese workers that had escaped the fall of Kaifeng, alerted when they saw the fleet in the harbor set ablaze. Now they were the Chinese12 slave band.

The Crobuzon Knights, however, came under counterattack by the American 27th Regiment of Washington Cavalry in addition to the supporting 33rd Regiment of Baltimore Cavalry and the 36th St Louis Cavalry. This formed the core of the 2nd Division of the V Corps.

The Knights bravely fought off the assault by the 33rd Regiment, their bravery becoming legendary when they charged the better armed cavalry and penetrated their lines. The melee was one of the bloodiest battles between mounted adversaries. In close quarters the swords of the knights proved effective and the 33rd Regiment crumbled. But a relief column from the 36th Regiment decided the day. The Knights tried to rally but the brigades of the 36th Regiment attacked as they arrived and carried the battle, capturing the Crobuzon Knight’s battle flags and killing most of their men and officers.

In 1750AD the foolish Hittites signed a trade embargo with the Mayans. Hannibal found this amusing as the neither had any hard goods that Hannibal wanted, nor was he willing to trade them anything. All that was left for either was death, thought the Hittites had a few more years left to live (but not many).

Two new frigates slipped from the docks in 1750AD – ICS Battle of Amsterdam FA-03 and ICS Honor of Civinator FA-04.

POP’s army narrow managed to consolidate before the 39th Regiment of Detroit Cavalry (the remaining Regiment of the 2nd Division of the V Corps).

OMIA was also making progress. The city of Braga was before the Old Man and it was bristling with muskets. The formidable 2,000 men of the 51st Infantry Regiment of Muskets were manning the earthen works of the large city. The Old Man knew that only the army could smash such a defense without a horrible loss of life. Just as the 51st Muskets were about to give away the Portuguese governor rushed the 53rd Muskets, another 2,000 men into the crumbling ranks.

The Old Man cursed. There was no way to prevent the loss now. The Old Man ordered the assault to continue and through a curtain of fire the army breeched the city battlements. The Governor of Braga, not willing to give way to easily, had organized a haste band of Pikes, the 1st Regiment of Braga Pikes. They were so fresh they hadn’t any battle or signal flags. The Knights of Charlemagne were called forward to break the city once and for all. The elite knights attacked in fine form as the pikemen rushed to the attack. The two forces collided in the city streets and the pikes got the better of the knights in the confines. Pressing their advantage they chased the knights out of the city only to find 200 more men waiting for them in the open. The pikemen withered away under a charge and the city burned. The Portuguese 30-32 were formed form those people that could not escape. This left the Knights of Charlemagne exposed, but the risk was considered worth the gains. The Portuguese source of saltpeter was now within range.

Part 1
Sorry, somehow I didn't take any pictures that applied to Part 1. :( Not sure what I was thinking! I must have been too excited about all the new rails!
Spoiler :

The year 1752AD opened with the inevitable attack upon the exposed Knights of Charlemagne. The band, attempting to make its way back to OMIA and the protection of the army was beset by the 33rd Lancers Regiment (Knights) and slain to the last man. Old Man Iron sneered at the reports and promised to slay the 33rd Lancers and retrieve the battle flags if at all possible. The Army had to heal but the remainder of the force was rested and ready.

More remarkably, the 27th Washington Regiment of Cavalry in addition to the supporting 36th St Louis Cavalry of 2nd Division of the V Corps attacked Mongoose Mountain, driving at the Knights of the Thistle and The Wild Geese. In a spectacular display of gallantry the Knights fortified upon the mountain and stood firm in the face of the assault. The dismounted men of the 27th Washington tried to climb the heights but found themselves in close combat with the better armored and armed Knights of the Thistle. When the 36th St Louis attempted to fire a volley into the Knights of the Thistle the crazed knights of the Wild Geese flew down from the mountain in a charge. The carnage was brutal on both ends but the Wild Geese closed into sword to saber combat and the heavy armor of the knights once more won out. Both companies of Carthaginian knights retreated to their position to mend their wounds and laugh at the foolish Americans. They had lost over 800 veteran cavalry on a hopeless charge.

The world stood as such in 1752AD.

A foolish American Galley was attempting to run past New Crobuzon but ICS Battle of Amsterdam FR-03, fresh out of the docks was in position to intercept. The frigate gave the galleon a broadside to weaken it and would continue to follow it. When Kyoto’s Destruction slipped from its repair dock the two would proceed to sink the Galleon before it could drop its cargo.

At the same time the Portuguese were traveling in convoy. A carrack and galley were moving toward the caravel ICS Arrow of Ice CA-09. The Arrow watched the approach but did not attempt to attack, remaining on the defensive against the armed carrack.

The Maggot Makers avenged the Knights of Charlemagne, crushing the disorganized 33rd Lancers Regiment and gathering the battle flags of the Knights.

By the end of 1752AD the Transcontinental Railroad was complete on the mainland. Now the remainder of the cities would be improved and side rails would be completed to make patrolling for barbarians easier. It also meant that new units could be delivered to the ESC instantly!

POP’s Elite Rangers now faced the Mayan city of Lazapa, a city with nearly a half million loyal Mayan citizens. It was also garrisoned by over 800 rifles, 2,000 pikes and 400 cavalrymen. This was a daunting task.

Deciding to test the defenses of the city, the Rangers sent the Knights of the Chalice as a sacrificial offering to see how well the heavy cavalry of Carthage would match up to this new threat. The 600 Knights of the Chalice charged 400 riflemen of the Quartz Rifles of Lazapa. The results was a fiasco; over 500 knights were lost and only 100 of the enemy were wounded or dead by the end of the combat.

Realizing this would be a war of attrition, Carthage would need to rely upon its massive units and its ability to withdraw to whittle down the enemy. What was truly needed with the knowledge of Military Tradition.

In attempt to weaken the city, POP’s Elite Rangers led the next attack. This would determine if Carthage could press the attack or would need to sue for peace until its forces could be built to take on the Mayan defenders. The Rangers pressed the attack mercilessly, waves of men crashing against a narrow section of 400 rifles. The carnage was horrible. Bullets tore through the army and killed hundreds of men before the Rangers finally took the position.

Unable to call off the attack after such serious losses, the attacks continued. The Meta Knights attacked the Quartz Rifles much to the same effect as the Knights of the Chalice; 300 knights dead to a mere 100 rifles out of the fight. But there was now a chance of success. The Halach Uinic of Lazapa led forwards a formation of 2,000 pikemen to allow the Quartz Rifles to rest and reload.

The Knights of the White Mountain, knowing their superiority to such a defense, attacked. Led by the Halach Uinic, the pikes held firm, beating down the waves of heavy cavalry. The Rangers prepared to send more men into the city, certain the Knights of the White Mountain were lost. A final surge, however, carried them to the battlements, nearly overrunning the Quartz Rifles as they reloaded.

Victory was at hand. The Knights of the White Company attacked the 200 remaining Mayan rifles. This time the tide turned against the rifles, their ammunition too low to continue the fight, the men fled. Had they known that only one or two more volleys would drive away the White Company they may have held their ground.

This left only 400 cavalrymen before the amassed army and there were still may heavy cavalry and knights remaining to attack. The elite Paladins of the Silver Ash were commanded into the breech. They handy won against the shocked cavalry, entering the city on the tail of a full route. The city of Lazapa was destroyed, another fatal blow to the Mayans. The slave bands 45-49 were formed from the citizens and two bands of spice workers captured when the city fell.

Back at the LoD lookouts on Mongoose Mountain watched as the 44th Atlanta Regiment of Musket entered the killing field with a supply wagon. They looked intent on setting up forward operating base and that could not be allowed. The 44th Regiment was also flanked by the American US 10th Reconnaissance Cavalry, the eyes of the V Corps. The Atomic Knights were assigned to attack and overwhelm the supply train and its guards. This attack was executed though the attack was not strong, leaving and equal number of Carthaginian casualties as American. Only the superior numbers of the Carthaginian force allowed them to survive the struggle. The American27-28 slave bands were formed.

The Knights of the Order of the Dragon were ordered to complete the attack on the 10th Cav. The Order of the Dragon pressed the attack and only prevailed by a thin margin against the better armed American Cavalry. This revealed another problem, however. The Order of the Dragon could now see the 52nd Buffalo Regiment of Cavalry preparing to attack Lady Isabella’s Knights.

The Knights of Glin were called forward to attack the 52nd Buffalo. The attack initially seemed to go well but the company became tangled in the marsh and the attack floundered. The American Cavalry pressed the attack back and the Knights of Glin were trapped. Unable to withdraw from the marshland, the knights were crushed. The Red Knights followed the attack of the doomed Knights of Glin. The 52nd Buffalo, having taken advantage of the marsh land, were now trapped themselves and crushed in hand-to-hand combat.

Carthage’s losses were beginning to mount. Only the open rails of the mainland would allow Carthage to continue landing enough reinforcements to maintain a war footing.

Carthage had to obtain Military tradition. To do this, the ambassadors to Sumeria and Byzantine were summoned and given the chance to turn over the knowledge. After all, had not Carthage given them the knowledge to advance to this new era? But the ambassadors rebuffed Hannibal and, enraged, he declared war on both nations. The Sumerian 1st Longbow Regiment (for the Sumerians had adopted a more civil military structure now that it didn’t matter anymore) was crushed by the Knights of Cold Steel. The heavy cavalry of The Knights of Kerry began to pillage the Byzantines. The hope was the pressure could be brought to bear to force them to capitulate.

In addition, Hannibal noted that Spain had begun to settle the ESC as well. A war would be brewing with them soon as well, it seemed.

The parade of embargos continued with the Hittites and American allying against Carthage. As well as the French on behalf of the Americans. And the Persians on behalf of the Americans.

The Carthaginians were so thrilled with these embargos that they offered to put a covered walkway between the throne room and the council room so that Hannibal and his advisors would not be affected by the weather as they walked from the drafty, open throne room into the council room. It was a very thoughtful gesture.

Part 2
Spoiler :

The year 1756AD was spent, mostly, gathering strength and healing. OMIA moved on Portugal’s only source of salts and disconnected them. These would remain disconnected now for all time. Hannibal was surprised when America did not counterattack at all. In a daring move, Hannibal ordered a band of knights and heavy cavalry towards the city of New Orleans to destroy the city.

A small Portuguese fleet of galleys also attempted to slip past the Carthaginian blockade by New Crobuzon. Since they didn’t have the correct password, they were sunk after ICS Battle of Amsterdam FR-03 fired upon their ships and told them to surrender. When they did not halt, ICS Kyoto’s Destruction FR-01 sunk them. The Kyoto suffered minor damage from running through the field of wreckage and headed back to port for repair, leaving Battle on station.

In a historic moment, the Defenders boarded the ICS Justice of Sparthage GA-01, leaving the Persian continent forever. It would be 10 years before they could disembark upon American Soil.

Hannibal also made a difficult decision. The Mayans were done for. Carthage could not take their remaining cities without great effort, however. Hannibal called his Advisors to consult.

“The problem, Hannibal, is that we must have knowledge of Military Tradition. Going for Medicine first was a mistake.” The Military Advisor growled.

“I admit, I thought we would have some leverage that could be used to purchase it from another country. But that has proven impossible.” The Trade Advisor conceded. “But perhaps a new answer has presented itself. The Mayan are wish to have peace all any price. They will give knowledge of Military Tradition, all 113 pieces of gold in their treasury, their world map, tribute of 65 pieces of gold for the next 20 budgeting cycles and two cities: Ek Balam and Xcalulmkin for peace.”

Hannibal considered this. “Is there a chance they will pay us this tribute?”

“It does not matter, Hannibal.” The Foreign Advisor said shrewdly. “This will give us the knowledge we want and some much needed gold. If they break the deal, we will be back at war – but now will have cavalry. The Mayans will not learn anything new. At least nothing of any great weight.”

The Military Advisor nodded. “I like this, Hannibal. Our units in the area can rest and heal. And when the treaty with the Hittites ends, we will have men already in the area to attack. Including if they break the deal. And if we are forced out because of growing borders, they’ll need to give our troops a free ride to the nearest border, thus extracting them from the battle field.”

“And, godly Hannibal, if we so desire we can always break the deal ourselves. None of those remaining have proven good to their word.” The Foreign Advisor reminded them. “It is something to consider should it be needed.”

“And we can use the lull in battle to remove the French and Portuguese once and for all from the battlefield.” The Military Advisor said with a gleam in his eye. “The French only have 22 years left to their treaty. About the time we are done with Portugal, we can finish the Hittites and the French. Then we can mass against the Mayans.”

“Let’s not forget that the defenders will land in America in 10 years. They will have free reign to pillage and their first target will be their horses. Without knights or cavalry, they will be dead in the water.” Hannibal grinned. “Very well, accept the deal. Let the Mayans off the hook. The use the money to increase research so we may learn Sanitation as fast as possible.”

Research of Medicine was immediately accelerated so that it would be learned in the next 26 years at a modest debt. This was a vast improvement and would get better as Toxic’s Café continued to grow. The first Cavalry was also produced. The Knights on Rails were refitted for service as Cavalry. With their new weapons came a new designation. They were to be Hannibal’s Raiders!

1756ADHannibalsRaiders-1.jpg

“Shortsighted Hannibal!” Hannibal looked up from the throne (in the throne room, not the restroom) and saw the Toxic Priests approaching. Conversations that began like this never ended well for Hannibal. “Hannibal! You have angered the gods with your lack of humility once more! To call Carthage’s greatest military units after you rather than in honor of the gods is unforgiveable!”

Hannibal bowed his head in defeat. “I beg the forgiveness of the gods, great Toxic Priests. Tell me what I can do to regain my piety!”

“You will be forgiven, Hannibal, because we know that you are godly and have done all the gods demand of you.” The Toxic Priests said calmly. “First you shall name all cavalry units in honor of Toxicman007. They shall be Toxic's 1st Cavalry, then Toxic's 2nd Cavalry, etcetera.”

I know there was discussion about modifying this to every one other cav, not sure how you feel about that Toxicman007.

Thus Hannibal’s Raiders were changed to Toxic's 1st Cavalry.

1756ADToxics1stCavalry-1.jpg

“And you must also do something more to appease the gods, Hannibal.” The Toxic Priests intoned. “You shall accept at least one Byzantine citizen into Toxic’s Café. As these are scientific people and you are making so many of them work as scientists, we may as well use in them in this profession.”

Hannibal immediately agreed, of course.

In 1758AD the list of embargos grew. Mayans and Sumeria agreed not to trade. In a daring raid the People’s 39th Riders attempted to attack POP’s Elite Rangers and were smartly rebuffed. The swords and crusaders of the Rangers encircled the riders and, deprived of their mobility, they were mercilessly slaughtered. After resting the men and administering many prayers, the priest of the Prince of Persia had healed enough of the army that no one would dare attack now.

In the war with Byzantium Theodora has sent the pitiful 4th Skirmishers to attack the 1,700 heavy cavalry outside of Amorium. The Knight of Kerry took the attack to the skirmishers; easily charging threw the hail of arrows. A few men fell from the saddle; others had horses ripped out from under them. But other than these handful of mishaps, the Knights under the command of Kerry suffered little damage. As the goal was not their destruction, the heavy cavalry fell back to observe the city without taking any other actions.

The Sumerians, in the midst of a war, had decided to send an Enkidu warrior our covering a handful of settlers. Chuckling, the elite knights of Cold Steel dispatched the smelly warriors and claimed two new Sumerian slave bands, Sumeria47-48.

The city of Richmond lay before the invading knights of Carthage. But the 15th Richmond Regiment of Muskets had already begun to entrench. The city was small and without any natural fortification but with the deadly muskets it was treacherous for knights to attack. Lady Isabella, ever blessed, volunteered her company for the attack.

Though valorous, Lady Isabella was repulsed. For a moment her flag reached the city limits. Then a volley of muskets knocked her from her horse. Wounded, the Lady was removed from the field and her company retired from the field.

The Stainless Silver Hawks, angered by the rough treatment of Isabella, followed the attack. Disastrously, they too were repulsed. The muskets fired volley after volley precisely as the knights massed, driving them off the field. The final attack was for Phaedo’s Pride. Ever cursed with ill luck the pride attacked and miraculously carried the day with only a few wounds. The city destroyed, the knights and cavalry retreated.

Two new Frigates also put to sea. ICS Raze of Bengal FR-05 and ICS Osman’s Demise FR-06. Both were sent towards New Crobuzon for duty. At the same time, ICS Battle of Amsterdam, on scouting duty, encountered the Portuguese carrack and galley that had menaced ICS Arrow of Ice CA-09. With four warships converging, the ships would be bombarded, pursued and then sunk. :D

In 1760AD ICS Fall of Karatepe FR-07 put to sea and it was a good thing. A virtual fleet of ships had arrived off the coast of Carthage! Aside from the Portuguese carrack and galley, an American Frigate and galley had appeared along with a Chinese caravel. And, with great gall, China had landed a band of settlers with a musket to cover them.

In 1760AD Byzantine19 was joined to Toxic’s Café as command by the Toxic Priests. They were immediately shown to the lab and Hannibal waited from her to produce a scientific miracle.

1760ADByzantineScientist.jpg

When it didn’t happen after 2.39 minutes, Hannibal lost interest and left her to her work.

Another ‘miracle’ was the fact that the Lady Isabella and her escorts were able to flee the area around the ruins of Richmond without being attacked.

Portugal was facing a difficult time, however. The city of Sagres lay before OMIA and his escorts and the city was presenting nothing more than 6,000 spearmen?!?

1760ADSagres.jpg

With plenty of choices available, the Old Man considered which unit under his command should be sent into battle. For a moment he considered making the assault with the Portuguese28 slave band. Then he thought better of it and sent the Knights of Night into combat. The Portuguese spearmen were organized into two regiments, the 71st and 72nd Infantry Regiments of Spears. The open lands around the city gave the city little protection and the spear regiments had only the shallow earthworks they could dig themselves.

In a great shock, the Knights of Night overran the 71st Regiment with such ferocity that the 72nd Regiment fled the field in open terror. The citizens were equally shocked as the Knights placed shackles upon them, creating the Portuguese33-34 slaves. Unfortunately this lightning attack left the Knights of Night vulnerable to attack (What the heck? Only one regular spear defenders? What’s going on with Henry?). The next target would be Lagos.

The final battle was with the Chinese landing. The Tusks of Justice! were routed to the landing with the Summer Knights close at hand. The muskets were a formidable group; 2,000 well trained veterans. Because of the strength of the formation and their landing within the thick forest it was decided that the elite Summer Knights should make the attack. Expecting to attack before the muskets could form the knights were rudely rebuffed by a wall of gunpowder and lead. The decision to send the elite knight was a good choice; the Summer Knights crawled away from the combat, only a few were unharmed and even fewer had mounts. The Chinese13-14 slaves were formed from the settlers.

As 1760AD came to a conclusion, the Trade Advisor recommended a new trade to Hannibal. Mursilis was willing to part with his world map, all 103 pieces of gold in his treasury and tribute of 9 pieces of gold for 20 budgeting cycles for knowledge of steam power. Even though Hannibal intended to attack them much sooner than this, it would still be nice income. The deal was made and science was once more accelerated.

In another shocking discovering, Persia was willing to give his world map, 80 pieces of gold and tribute of 47 pieces of gold for the next 20 budgeting cycle for military tradition! Although they were certain to fail to pay all this gold, it was worth it to carry the balance for a short duration! Hannibal knew that reaching Sanitation so that Hospitals could be built would result in great benefits for Carthage. The deal was made immediately. Research was accelerated again.

The final milestone was that the first cavalry had reached the LoD with the landing of Toxic’s 1st Cavalry.

In 1762AD and the parade continued. The Persians and Byzantines signed and embargo against Carthage. As expected the Portuguese 36th Lancer Regiment (Knights) struck the Knights of Night as they attempted to regain the safety of OMIA. The Old man, deeply angered, personally returned with the army to slay the 36th Lancers. The rest of the army moved towards Lagos, pillaging as it traveled, leaving a great void behind them.

The year, however, was better marked for the naval engagements off the coast of New Crobuzon.

1762ADNavalBattleofNC.jpg

The Sparthaginian Armada continued to shell the passing Portuguese carracks and galleys. With the experience sailors trained at the waterslides of Sparthage’s Voyage the enemy vessels could not outmaneuver the Sparthaginian ships. After extensive shelling, the heavily damaged escort carracks fell pray to ICS Kyoto’s Destruction FR-01. Several shots sent the remaining carracks to the bottom of the ocean, leaving the galley alone and damaged.

The Mayans and Portugal jumped on the embargo bandwagon in 1764AD. The naval battles continued near New Crobuzon. After shelling the American frigates ICS Raze of Bengal FR-05 sunk the American the American escorts, leaving he damaged galley to its fate. ICS Kyoto’s Destruction FR-01 sallied out of New Crubuzon and sunk the American galley before returning to the flotilla.

The Portuguese galley retreated under the cover of its escort, a newly arrived carrack with another galley while the Chinese caravel continued on is course. Sparthage, meanwhile, launched two new ships, a galleon (ICS Bravery of Isabella GA-02) and a frigate (ICS Sacrifice of Sparthage FR-08).

Finally, ICS Justice of Sparthage GA-01 successful unloaded The defenders onto American Soil. :D

1764ADLandingoftheDefenders.jpg

The Byzantines had advanced the 5th Skirmishers (Longbows) to contest Carthage’s might. Once more the Knights of Kerry brushed them aside with little loss.

The unfortunate Henry of Portugal had managed to rush 2,000 veteran muskets to the defense of the city. With nearly half a million citizens, it was good that Henry was thinking about them in spite of spending his time building a bunch of ships. :crazyeye:

Interesting things were happening at the LoD. The Americans had sent the 63rd San Diego Regiment of Cavalry with a supply wagon towards Mongoose Mountain. Also in the area of Mongoose was the Chinese People’s 33rd Riders. Crossing the swap was the Portuguese 40th Lancer Regiment (Knights).

Toxic’s 1st Cavalry attacked the 40th Lancers to cover the workers in the area but this further revealed the People’s 37th Riders. Toxic’s 1st handily dispatched the Portuguese knights that were bogged down in the swamp, shooting most of them as they tried to flee. For this, the first cavalry combat and a great victory, the cavalry were given the honors of an elite band.

The Knights of the Thistle attacked the 63rd San Diego from Mongoose Mountain. Sweeping out of the shadow of the mountain, they had expected to take the Americans by surprise. Only they had fallen into a trap. The Americans began to fire as soon as the knight began to move out of cover. The carnage was great with more than 50% casualties in the first few minutes. Stunned but not defeated, the Knights pushed home the attack, pressing into hand-to-hand combat where their armor could tip the scales. Finally the 63rd broke and fled, leaving behind their supply wagon. The supplies were quickly gathered and the men pressed into the service for Carthage as America29-30.

In a daring move the Red Knights preempted the attack of the 37th Riders by killing them instead. Falling prey to the swap and believing they were undetected, the Riders were quickly destroyed by the veteran knights.

In a blitz of attacks, the People’s 33rd Riders and an unseen 39th Riders charged the LoD. Both would fail, one to the Red Knights, the other to the Wild Geese. The Red Knights, proving themselves elite, finally fell to the American US 5th Reconnaissance Cavalry. The people of Carthage mourned the passing of such an honorable company.

By 1766AD Henry had not been able to garrison Lagos with anything better than 1,500 pikes from the regular army. These were the unfortunately 45th Infantry Regiment of Pikemen. The only unwounded unit, the Wolf Pack, a veteran band of heavy cavalry, were tasked to make the assault. The Wolf Pack charged the formation but was quickly chased from the battlements when the pikes charged into the formation. Though a defeat, the Portuguese had tipped their hands. When the pikes left their fortification they revealed that here was no one left to man them. On top of this, only 900 men returned to the battlements. Or at least tried to return.

The wounded Maggot Makers, missing 15% of their combat strength, made the charge anyway. This charge was successful, the Maggot Makers reaching the battlements at the same time as the pikemen. A general melee took place and the Governor of Lagos was slain. With his death the final defense crumbled and the city was laid open to the forces of Carthage. The citizens were gathered into three new worker bands as the city burned. Portuguese35-37.

The Old Man now called a halt so that his men could heal. Then the conquest of Portugal would continue.

The sea battle off New Crobuzon continued with the priests of Sparthage dealing death to everything with a sail. The Chinese fleet of caravels was the next victim. Shelled incessantly for two days, ICS Sacrifice of Sparthage FR-08 made the final kill, sending the small fleet to the bottom without any damage to Sacrifice.

Different year, same story. Hittites and Byzantines join in an embargo. The American US 5th Reconnaissance Cavalry pressed their luck against the crusaders of the Death Hand and lost. The crusaders, well knowing the cavalry were in the swamp, awaited for them to emerge and then struck for concealment, closing the distance quickly so that the guns of the Cavalry could not come into action.

In further naval warfare, after bombarding the Portuguese navy, the ICS Fall of Karatepe FR-07 sank the escorting carracks though return fire damaged the Fall slightly.

The Byzantine 6th Skirmishes, trying the same tactic over again (insanity?) the Knights of Kerry slew the longbowmen with the same, practiced ease.

In 1770AD ICS Burning of Coba FR-09 set sail from Smilin’ Bob and ICS Death of Gandhi FR-10 set sail from Toxic’s Café. The remaining fleet chased down the Portuguese galley and ICS Battle of Amsterdam FR-03 sunk the galley and all hands.

The Mayans had landed their first annoying settler in the typical place. Hannibal was happy that there was only 26 more years left to the peace between them. The American had sent the US 6th Reconnaissance Cavalry on another suicide mission, a move that was not smart seeing as how they would no longer be making cavalry with their horses disconnected by the Defenders.

It was decided that OMIA would move northward to meet with POP’s Elite Rangers coming down through the Hittites when it was time to kill them again.

The various artillery of Snakehead Mountain plastered the US 6th Cav, scattering more than half of their strength before Toxic’s 2nd Cavalry administered the final blow.

OMIA annihilated the (Portuguese) 15th Artillery Regiment (Longbows) and claimed two new slave bands from the supply train with the artillery. These were the Portuguese38-39. Because he could not bring the slaves back to the healing units he ordered them scattered so that if the Portuguese came back after them it would give him an opportunity to kill some of them. :D

If enough people want only every second cavalry to be named in the honour of Toxic, I don't mind.

BTW, I couldn't help but notice the Hittites only have two cities left. My previous city-gifting order may as well be changed at this point to

The last city taken from the Hittites must be gifted to the Maya.

Unless you've already played ahead and/or have gifted cities to the Maya already.

It is hard to see but they actually have four cities left so the order of Toxicman007 will be fulfilled! The Mayans are not cooperating with the plan at the moment, but they will come around. :D. It just took a little while to work into the story. The current turn set is addressing this and Elephatium's order. :)

Part 1
Spoiler :

At the dawn of 1772AD an interesting trade became available. Because of the many embargos Carthage had limited trading partners for resources and luxuries (not that Carthage was exporting any anyway) but Carthage’s technologies and maps were still tradable items. When the Persian ambassador asked to trade maps Hannibal’s immediate reaction was to laugh. To humor Xerxes, Hannibal asked his trade advisor to explore the idea and thought no more of it until she came back with a smile.

1772ADPersianMapoffer.jpg

“Hannibal, this might not be such a bad idea.” The Trade Advisor said happily. “We need to keep the Persians around for next 200 years, so we might as well gain from them. They are willing to supply their world map, all 108 pieces of their gold and tribute of 6 pieces of gold for 20 cycles. Now they certainly intended to cheat us of the tribute, they must be earning the gold from a deal brokered from their technology sales. This gold will eventually dry up. But we can capture all of their gold stocks and receive some assistance until the gravy train ends.”

Hannibal considered this. “And the dangers?”

“Limited, Lord Hannibal.” The Military Advisor reported. “Our world map has already been traded around and even those with limited resources probably know most of it from the likes of Gandhi and such. And with rails we can defend every corner of the island from invasion. Even if they manage to put down a settlement or supply depot, it won’t last long.”

“I would caution, however, that we should not take the deal just yet.” The Trade Advisor said. “We may be passing up the money, but we should preserve the trade for when it becomes available on our terms. Let us think on it and send their ambassador away. Then we can bring him back in a few days time to discuss the details.”

Hannibal agreed to this plan. It was a risk, but it seemed wise to him. After careful thought the ambassador was called back and the final deal was struck. Persia would now give their (worthless) world map, the 149 pieces of gold from their treasure and tribute of 5 pieces of gold for 20 cycles.

1772ADFinalMapdeal.jpg

In addition the silk trade with Spain had expired and a new deal needed to be penned.

“Lord Hannibal, Isabella’s small island empire is drab and unimportant. She is willing to give us the silks we desire, her world map, all 12 pieces of gold from her treasury and tribute of 8 pieces of gold for the next 20 cycles for the (useless) knowledge of Free Artistry!” The Trade Advisor said, beaming. “I would suggest we make this deal.”

And so it was done.

As it turned out, Carthage’s World Map was worth even more. The Hittites were willing to give up their (worthless) world map, all 19 pieces of gold from their treasury and tribute of 4 pieces of gold for 20 budgeting cycle. Although the Hittites were on the ‘soon to be deceased’ list, Hannibal accepted. Gold was, after all, gold.

The ‘diplomatic’ issues out of the way, Hannibal turned to news of war. The report that gained immediate attention was the continued – and suicidal – naval blockade runners passing by New Crobuzon. The Americans, deciding that a galley had no chance of making the run even with a Frigate for support, sent a small fleet of caravels. Said caravels sailed up to the ICS Osman’s Demise FR-06 and ICS Sacrifice of Sparthage FR-08 to ask for direction to the Carthaginian coast.

1772ADAmericanBlockaderunner.jpg

The Sparthaginian Navy, helpful as always, greeted Carthage’s newest visitors with a 21 gun salute aimed at their waterline. Not wanting to be left out, ICS Burning of Coba FR-09 and ICS Fall of Karatepe FR-07 rushed to the party. ICS Sacrifice of Spartage FR-08 claimed the kill after extensive bombardment. This was, however a trap. The Americans, having heard of the blockade and the mighty Sparthaginian fleet had packed several of the caravels with oil. Set ablaze, these ships did substantial damage to the Sacrifice and it would need to return for refitting at New Crobuzon before it could engage in battle again. In spite of this the American caravel and all its cargo went for a swim at the bottom of the ocean.

The response to the dispersed Portuguese slaves was rather disappointing.

1772ADPortugueseResponse.jpg

A single musket appeared on the horizon, but better to kill him in the open than in a city. The Black Guard* were tasked with the destruction of this band while the army prepared to move. The 600 heavy cavalry met the 7th Infantry Regiment of Muskets on the open field in a pitch battle the relied upon open speed rather than fortifications. The 1,500 men of the 7th Muskets were army regulars but this did not prepare them to face the elite heavy cavalry. The battle was over in less than an hour, the 7th Muskets completely routed from the field.

With this success the Old Man ordered the entire army forward to finish taking the Portuguese objectives in time to turn on the Hittites.

A second band of Portuguese, the 61st Artillery Regiment (Longbows) were caught along the rail line leading to Snakehead Mountain. The Order of the Dragon was sent to clean them up. Caught on the open flat desert, the longbowmen had no chance at defense. The Dragons pressed in under the cover of a dust storm and the knights were amongst the bowmen before they could react. They had little time to defend themselves, causing some superficial wounds to the Dragons.

The 61st Artillery defeated, the Dragons could also see the 10th Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry in the distance, also crossing the desert. It would appear that Henry’s army was arriving in detail and being defeated the same way. It was decided to allow these men to continue their journey; they would be destroyed later. Scouts were sent to track their movements but they were otherwise left alone.

Having failed to send its caravel through the blockade, America tried again with galleon in the belief that the Sparthaginian Navy would be confused by the sudden change in their mode of transportation and allow them to pass through.

1774ADSeaBattle.jpg

The combined might of the Sparthaginian Navy, 6 flotillas of frigates were waiting for them. The opening shot from ICS Burning of Coba FR-09 smashed the galleons into kindling, setting several of the blockade runners on fire. More than 150 sailors were killed by the shelling. Bombardment from the Demise (FR-06) and Defense (FR-11) continued until the galleons were a fleet of burning wrecks. The Fall of Karatepe FR-07 delivered the final blow, sailing into the wreckage and firing at will, sinking the remaining ships that refused to surrender.

At the LoD things were becoming interesting. The Americans had advanced most of the 3rd Division of the V Corps in an attempt to create a forward supply base for attacks against the Carthaginians stationed in the area. The 42nd Seattle Muskets were covering the supply train while the 19th Houston Cavalry and 8th Miami Cavalry took flanking positions, the 8th Miami being closest to Snakehead Mountain, presumably with the intent to cut off the Carthaginian units returning from France after being ‘ejected’ by Joan when she settled the city of Bordeaux which encompassed the Fortress of Solitude. Hannibal promised that this city would be the first one destroyed by Carthage in the 4 short years pending the expiration of the peace treaty.

Toxic’s 2nd Cavalry was tasked with destroying the 42nd Seattle put up a solid wall of fire to ward off the Cavalry but the open plains and their outdated muskets were no match for the rifled barrels for the 2nd Cavalry. But they did not escape without damage to themselves. The 2nd Cavalry lost 100 men in the fight with another 200 wounded, some of them being wounded by enfilading fire from the 19th Houston.

The supply train had been captured but the 2nd Cavalry had to abandon the slaves formed to avoid its own destruction. The American31-32 slaves were divided and moved into positions to invite attacks that would expose the attacking units to counterattack.

The 8th Miami was bombarded by the batteries of Snakehead Mountain and then attacked by the elite Outriders. The Outriders only barely managed to prevail, quickly retreating back to the fort to recoup their loses and heal their wounds. The batteries were protected from counterattack by the outdated crusaders.

The (Portuguese) 10th Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry had also made its way into the path of the retreating Carthaginian units and was destroyed by Lady Isabella’s Knights. The defeat of the 10th Medieval Infantry, however, revealed the existence of the 38th Lancer Regiment (Knights) also crossing the desert. :wallbash:

Unable to leave the Portuguese at their backs, the Hessian Company attacked the veteran 38th Lancer Regiment. The open desert warfare was an even match between the men but the Carthaginian heavy cavalry outnumbered the Portuguese knights 3-2. In the end all 400 of Henry’s subjects lay dead in the desert while only 200 of Hannibal’s men were wounded or killed.

Theodora of the Byzantines offered the 7th Skirmishers (longbows) for the usual military sacrifice. Kerry obliged them, slaying them in spite of an annoying river crossing.

1776AD was a great year for Carthage! The Science Advisor came running into the throne room. “Great Hannibal! We have learned the secrets of Medicine! With this we can now research the much needed technology of Sanitation!”

1776ADMedicine.jpg

“If we increase our scientific research we may gain this knowledge in but 24 years! Then we can grow our cities and out research will explode!”

Hannibal prayed that this was a metaphor but he congratulated his Science Advisor anyway. This was good news indeed! In addition, Carthage had begun to trade world maps with the lesser nations regularly. What he had once thought to be worthless was, in fact, not. Somehow the other nations seemed to ‘automatically’ know the location of the all the barbarian camps in the world. This was quite useful knowledge as these tribes continued to hold a regular amount of 25 pieces of gold per camp which made it well worth the while to continue to exterminate them. A lucrative black market was beginning to form around the trading of world maps.

Something I never realized until now – the AI always knows the exact location of every barb camp. Cheaters! But it is handy knowledge in this case!

Hannibal ordered it to be so.

A new flotilla of Portuguese carracks and galleys were seen off the coast, giving the Sparthaginian Fleet something to look forwards to other than their turn in the barrel. It was still too far out to do anything about them but their progress would be dutifully tracked.

The time for the destruction of the Portuguese city of Oporto had arrived, however. Without saltpeter or any knowledge of nationalism, all the Portuguese could offer were 4,000 veteran pikemen for the defense of a half-million citizens. It was a poor offering but the pikes did have the advantage of being entrenched in a ring of natural hills. The Portuguese, it would seem, were not completely stupid.

Old Man Iron decided to start the attack with his supporting heavy cavalry. The Black Guard were once more called upon to open the battle. The elite cavalrymen advanced against the 14th Infantry Regiment of Pikes (part of what was known as the Oporto Division) only to find that the 19th Artillery Regiment (Longbows) were also present and in support of the city. The Black Guard charged hard through a hail of arrows that mostly missed their targets. The struggle was fierce and raged most of the morning but the Guard finally managed to press the 14th Pikes from the battlements at the loss of 30% of their effective fighting strength.

Old Man Iron now realized it was not possible to take the city this year without leaving men exposed to counterattack. No matter which unit took the city, there would be vulnerability. The 15th Pikes and the 19th Longbows were before him at the very least. It was possible there could be other units as well, other artillery or lancers. The Old Man decided to make the next attack with the army to reveal Henry’s hand and to preserve the strength of his men.

The army easily pushed back the 15th Pikes but not without some casualties. This fight confirmed two things. First, a third band of pikes, the 22nd Pikes were being rushed forward. Second, the 19th Longbows were the only artillery present for there was no counterattack to the charge of the army.

Satisfied and facing only army regulars now, the Old Man pushed his attack against the 1,500 pikes of the 22nd Regiment. The 22nd Pikes crumbled and, to everyone’s surprise, the 25th Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry rushed to fill the gap in the city’s defenses. It appeared that Henry was not willing to give up Oporto as easily as his other cities.

The next in the order of battle was the Maggot Makers. After a spectacular beginning, overrunning a full 70% of the 25th Regiment, the Maggot Makers were caught in street-to-street fighting and suffered horrible casualties. Reduced to but a shadow of their strength, the Maggot Makers did not return to the Old Man empty handed. When they returned the held the heads of the commanders of the 25th Regiment. The city defenses had been shattered upon their lances.

This left only artillery in the city. The Hanged Knights made this final attack. The 19th Longbows melted away and the city was captured. The Portuguese40-42 joined the slave train.

At the LoD the Americans had acted rather predictably. The America32 slave band was captured but it was not moved far enough away to protect it from retrieval. In addition the19th Houston Cavalry was joined by the remainder of the 3rd Division, the 21st New York Cavalry and 52nd Seattle Cavalry.

The 19th Houston was given the royal treatment by the batteries of the Snakehead Mountain and was reduced to only 50% combat effectiveness when the Blackened Company hit them. The 19th Houston put a brave fight, killing at least as many knights in the conflict.

This complete, all of the workers on the ESC were rushed to Coil Peak to build a fortress to assist in repelling any attack by the 52nd Seattle Cavalry.

Elsewhere Theodora had become active and had produced the 9th Skirmishers. Surprised at her efficiencies, Aabraxan’s Honor Guard took the honors of eliminating the pesky longbows. As a pleasing consequence of this attack a mutual protection pact between France and the Byzantines was activated, resulting in a French Declaration of War.

1776ADMPPByzantinesandFrench.jpg

This greatly pleased Hannibal and a full offensive against the French was ordered to begin immediately! Toxic’s 3rd Cavalry moved first, attacking the 102st Medieval Infantry Regiment of the French Foreign Legion that was moving with a band of French settlers. Hannibal laughed. Again with the Medieval Infantry? The battle was over quickly, the French warriors mauled by the heavy armaments of the Carthaginian cavalry. The 3rd Cavalry only suffered minor damage in the exchange when a band of infantry that faked a surrender suddenly turned on their guards. The French31-32 were added to the slave count.

Toxic’s 3rd Cavalry continued to explore and found that the Fortress of Solitude remained unoccupied. Acting with quick Initiative the Fortress was immediately captured. A massive army was immediately injected into France including 2,200 heavy cavalry, 2,600 knights and 1,100 Toxic Cavalry; thirteen companies in all.

From the Fortress of Solitude it could be seen that only a single band of 1,500 pikemen held the city of Bordeaux, the 14th French Infantry Regiment of Pikes.

It was finally at the end of 1776AD that Hannibal decided to allow William off the hook for being terminally stupid.

1776ADDutchPeace.jpg

William was forced to surrender his world map for the privilege of living. Belatedly William reminded Hannibal that a Right of Passage needed to be signed as well so that his Carthaginian neighbors could continue to hang around.

Part 2
Spoiler :

In 1778AD Hannibal was informed by the Mayans that, because of his invasion of the French, that it was necessary for the Mayans to respond with a declaration of war in spite of the fact that it was the French that had declared the war and Carthage was just defending itself, albeit rather aggressively. Hannibal did not care – this was 400 pieces of gold stolen from Carthage in tribute!

Before overacting to this Hannibal check with his Diplomatic (Foreign) and Trade Advisors. What was discovered was incredible.

Theodora was willing to talk peace and she had plenty of money to talk for her. A quick check revealed she would give Carthage the sum of 1272 pieces of gold and tribute of 230 pieces of gold for the next 20 cycles for the knowledge of medicine!

The Sumerians also wanted out of the war and would pay their world map, 6 pieces of gold and tribute of 14 pieces of gold.

Persia also had money pouring into its coffers and would give a further 104 pieces of gold, their world map and tribute of 34 piece of gold for the knowledge of medicine.

This was incredible. Hannibal was cautious. The straight money from the Byzantines and Persians would give Hannibal enough to expedite his research even if the tribute dried up. But Hannibal was also aware that these new Mutual Protection Pacts were causing problems.

Hannibal decided to take all of these deals but would then establish embassies with the Persians and Byzantines so that no further pacts were violated – at least unintentionally. :D

And embassy with Persia carried a cost of 44 pieces of gold.

1776ADPersianEmbassy.jpg

The scene here was rather pitiful. The idiotic Xerxes was building a Galleon rather than a harbor and he had science set to 100% as if that would help anything. Well, no one said Hannibal’s ‘ally’ needed to be smart to make this work. A quick check revealed that Persia had a pact with the Mayans. Darn. An attack on the Mayans would then trigger a war with the Persians and rob Carthage of its tribute.

The deal with Theodora was struck – peace and Medicine for her world map, 1272 pieces of gold and tribute of 230 pieces of gold. An embassy with the Byzantines cost 110 pieces of gold.

1778ADByzantineEmbassy.jpg

Theodora was also spending all her money on research while building a longbow. Sigh. A quick diplomatic check revealed no MPP entanglements.

Peace was made with the Sumerians and finally Persia as already outlined.

Hannibal ordered that the research on Sanitation be accelerated so that it was due in only 14 more years. This was pushing all income into research (100%) with a deficit of only 2 pieces of gold per cycle! :woohoo:

Hannibal was further visited by the Toxic Priests. Bowing low, for the Toxic Priests had taken particular interest in the working of Carthage as of late, Hannibal greeted them with food and drink.

These things were not of much interest to the Toxic Priests. “Pious Hannibal, we have long meditated on the plight of the Netherlanders and it concerns us that they have no knowledge of polytheism. They are still stuck worshipping their corrupt and diseased mystics and wearing silly fur hats like Davy Crockett.”

Hannibal snickered. William's hat was certainly ridiculous. “I agree that the Netherlanders are despicable, but I do not know what can be done. They are so backward that they can’t even ride horses. Not that they have horses to ride, of couse.”

“Fortunately, shortsighted Hannibal, we have the answer.” The Toxic Priests assured Hannibal. “It is the will – and the command of Toxicman007 that they be free given knowledge of Polytheism so that they may properly learn to worship the gods of Carthage!”

Hannibal bowed low to the Toxic Priest. “Your wisdom is, of course, undeniable. I shall see to this trade at once!”

And so it was that the Netherlands learned of the existence of gods. And they deeply mourned their fate as the eternal subjects of Carthage, trembling before the might of the Carthaginian gods though they were not, perhaps, as fear inspiring as Hannibal’s mother. Hannibal greatly enjoyed the new cries of suffering and woe from the city of his old enemy, relishing their misery. The Toxic Priests were wise indeed!

1778ADDutchGiftofSuffering.jpg

At the LoD the Mayans, Americans and Chinese had made a real mess of things.

1778ADLoDmess.jpg

The Mayan Pearl Rifles of Palenque were escorting a band of settlers to the age old ruins of Hattusas. But the Chiense People’s 3rd Spears were also rushing to the same location. The Mayans had also landed a sacrificial regiment of cavalry with a second band of settlers, which was done after they had declared war. :crazyeye: Finally, two waves of American cavalry had once more assaulted Mongoose Mountain. The US 13th Reconnaissance Cavalry heraldry the arrival of the 1st Division of the IV Corps. The 52nd Seattle Cavalry Cavalry charged and killed the Knights of Earth in cowardly attack while the knights were burying the dead of the and 42nd Seattle Muskets (mostly so that they didn’t stink up the place). The 52nd Seattle Cavalry did not escape unscathed and it was the intentions of the Carthaginian army that they never be given a chance to rest until they reached the next life. Finally the 21st New York Cavalry cut across the roads and rails to once more attempt an approach on Snakehead Mountain.

The first order of business was to destroy the 21st New York Cavalry to allow the retreat of Snakehead Mountain’s Batteries from the open plain. Toxic’s 6th Cavalry used the fortress at Snakehead to ambush the 21st New York as they prepared to fall upon the crusaders and batteries of the fort. The battle was brief, mere hours, as modern rifles and cavalry fought across the open plain. But the attacking 6th Cavalry had the advantage of surprise and the 21st New York Cavalry were easily routed from the field. The survivors were released only after they surrendered their mounts and weapons.

The Wild Geese took issue with the murderous 52nd Seattle Cavalry and a heroic charge down Mongoose Mountain clashed with the disorganized Americans. The dishonorable American soldiers were caught looting the bodies of the fallen Carthaginians for it appeared the Lincoln was running low on food and was having a hard time feeding his military now that the Defenders were tearing a destructive swath through their lands and sowing the ground with salt.

In one of the first tests of modern cavalry against rifles, the elite Toxic’s 1st Cavalry contested the movement of the (Mayan) Pearl Rifles of Palenque. The outcome was inconclusive. Though the Toxic 1st Cavalry carried the day, it was a hard fought battle. The Mayan rifles kept up a steady fire and caused serious damage to the Carthaginian cavalrymen. The Mayan50-51 slaves were sent to Mongoose Mountain to help with the construction of the fort. In fact, with the road open, all of the ESC slaves were sent to Mongoose to construct the fort and additional garrisons were placed on the mountain to hold it pending its completion.

The Batteries of the Snakehead were transferred to the command of the Left Boot of templar_x to shell the sacrificial Mayan cavalry. Even the Sparthaginian Navy got into the action. In a heretofore unseen land-naval cooperative effort ICS Honor of Civinator FR-04 assisted with the artillery bombardment. By the end of the shellacking, the Mayan cavalry were so scrambled that Second Knights (formed by the survivors of the First Knights and a new influx of the sons of rich Carthaginian merchants) accepted their surrender. The survivors and the settler band became the Mayan52-53 slaves and were sent to build a fortress in the western mountains.

Taking stock of the war with Portugal the conclusion of the struggle was evident. But Hannibal had more pressing concerns at the moment and so decided to let Henry off light. Henry was willing to give Carthage half of its remaining cities: Rio Janerio, Alcacer do Sal and Leiria along with his world map. This would free OMIA to assist with the depopulating of the central band of the eastern ESC that had come to be colonized by a ragged patchwork of Chinese and Mayan cities. In 100 years (if not sooner) Hannibal could return to dispatch the Portuguese with ease. Another of Carthage’s enemies had fallen by the wayside. The added benefit was that Carthage once more had a friendly port so that coal and iron could be imported to construct railroads on the ESC.

The easy things out of the way, Carthage pursued its war aims in France. The Knights of the Order of the Oak were sent to destroy the 14th French Infantry Regiment of Pikes in fledgling Bordeaux. The slaughter of the cities inexperienced 1,500 pikemen was a simple matter. Though the city itself was too small to use for slave labor a band of fur trappers and a band of settlers were also captured when the city fell. :D These made the French33-35 slave bands. The slaves were immediately sent into the French-built fort at the base of the Fortress of Solitude, which was ironically crowded at the moment. The army was mostly moved into the fort to hold it until the slaves could build a road to make movement easier. Two band of crusaders were also sent towards the Fortress of Solitude to assist with the defense and to free other units to attack the French.

With everything going splendidly, Hannibal once more considered the luckless Hittites. But as Hannibal began to plan the destruction of his hated foe Mursilis he was visited by the Toxic Priests once more. Hannibal immediately bowed low to the priests of Toxicman007, for this god had been particularly interested in the working of Carthage as of late.

“Wise Toxic Priest, what may I do in the service of the gods today?” Hannibal inquired.

“Great Hannibal, it would seem that a mistake has been made; an unfortunate mix-up in the Toxic labs.” The Toxic Priests said. Though the words sounded like an apology the intonation as definitely not.

“What error?” Hannibal inquired. And why did he care?

“Godly Hannibal, when we rescued you from the poison at Amsterdam before it became the holy city of Toxic’s Café, we told you that the poison was of Mayan origin. The assassin never confessed but we assumed we knew enough.” The Toxic Priests explained. “The test results were quickly matched against the Mayan civ color and that was that.”

This sounded reasonable to Hannibal. “What was the problem, then?”

“It seems that the Hittites share a color very much like the Mayans. And for that matter, so do the Americans and they all live in the same general region.” The Toxic Priest continued. Hannibal nodded in agreement. He remembered thinking much the same thing only a short time before. “Now that we have looked at the results a little closer it would seem that it was not the Mayans that attempted to assassinate you but the Hittites.”

Hannibal slammed his fist down. “It is a good thing our peace deal has expired so I can remove them from the world once and for all!”

“Hold, Hannibal.” The Toxic Priests said patiently. “This can be done but now we must make reparations to the Mayans. As we destroyed three of their cities - Coba, Mayapan, Kaminaljuyu – we must give them three cities in return. And because it was through Hittite deceit that this occurred, it is the will of Toxicman007 that the cities be that of the Hittites.”

Hannibal did not like the idea of giving cities to the Mayans but it was the will of the gods. He knew taking back these cities would be difficult. It was then that the priest of the wise Elephantium once more came into the presence of Hannibal. What had he done to earn such recognition today?

“Oh wise priest of Elephantium, what news do you bring from your great god?” Hannibal beseeched the priests.

“Just this, obedient Hannibal,” The priest said in a loud voice. “We cannot intervene in the wishes of another god, but you have other commitments to the gods to fulfill. Gifting cities to enemy civilizations is not in alignment with these commitments. After the traitorous Mayans receive their cities Carthage will never again bequeath a city to an enemy civilization.”

These words were fair to Hannibal but his dream nagged at him that something was not right. He would obey Elephantium, however, until he better understood his vision.

Of more immediate concern was summoning the Hittite ambassador to his throne room. The Hittites attempted to be pleasant and to give the impression that they had done nothing wrong. Hannibal dismissed this façade and had the ambassador fed to his mother by dropping the man through a craftily constructed trap door into a pit below where his mother had her lair. Hannibal also noted in his ledger that the Hittites were being released from total tribute in the amount of 167 pieces of gold but it seemed to be gold well spent to Hannibal.

The difficult of the situation, of course, was that the Mayans had declared war on Carthage and thus no Hittite cities could currently be gifted to them. Hannibal decided to move POP’s Rangers through the Hittite lands, pillaging as they went until peace could be made with the Mayans.

In 1780AD, in spite of the belief that Carthage and the Byzantines had entered into a cordial relationship, Theodora signed and embargo with Joan against Carthage. Stupid embargos. :p

With the arrival of the Crusaders at the Fortress of solitude it was decided that the offensive in France should continue. Toxic’s 4th Cavalry led the attack on Strasbourg. Quickly covering the distance it was found that the city was held but a mere 4,000 spearmen. The 400 cavalrymen of Carthage could not believe their luck. The attack was immediately ordered. The long range fire of rifled muskets could not completely remove the stubborn spears of 9th French Infantry Regiment of Spears and when the troopers entered the trenches the French descended upon them as a mob, killing 50 men and wounding many more men and beasts.

The grisly deed finally complete, the 4th Cavalry set the city afire and collect a band of fur trappers caught in the area when the assault began. These were the French36 slave bands and were sent back towards the Fortress of Solitude and Beaver Fort.

OMIA began its withdrawal towards France and its new duties while POP’s Elite Rangers began their rampage through the Hittite Lands.

Otherwise 1780AD was quiet. 1782AD was shaping up a bit different. China had sent the Peoples 43rd Riders to establish an outpost on Carthage’s Mainland.

1782ADChineseInvasin.jpg

This, of course, was unacceptable. The newly formed Toxic’s 11th cavalry was sent to handle the invasion. To the great surprise of Carthage the 43rd Riders proved a tough nut to crack and the cocky 11th Cavalry ran into disaster. The Riders, anticipating this response, placed half of their men in ambush position at the sides of the roads. When the 11th Cavalry approached the Riders fell upon from all side. Cut off from retreat, the 11th Cavalry fought to the bitter end. The Riders, now recognized for an elite band, had suffered 60% casualties in the battle. Unfortunately for them, Carthage was well railed and relief troops were but a click away.

The Black Hats answered the summons to battle and immediately pressed the attack on the 43rd Riders before they could consolidate their gains. They were not so lucky against the black hats and the Chinese15-16 slave bands were formed from the Chinese supply train.

Against the French the next move was against Bayonne. 1,100 heavy cavalry, 800 knights and 800 Toxic cavalry were dispatched to take the city. Upon arrival they discovered the 25th French Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry holding the city. Exhausted by their long march, the Carthaginian army invested the city and rested their troops for the coming assault.

The annoying Chinese had settled the city of Shantung on the outskirts of the Snake Mountains –they were just begging to be killed. But the Mayans sent a relief force of 800 cavalry to keep the Carthaginian occupied, giving the Chinese a respite. The batteries of Mongoose Mountain took careful aim at the Obsidian and Ruby Cavalry of Uaxactun.

The regular mixture of rocks and steel shot dropped amidst the Mayan Cavalrymen, spooking horses and killing a few men outright. The damage done, the Jagged Knights took the lead attack against the Ruby Cavalry. Already reduced to 75% combat effectiveness the Ruby Cavalry put up quite a scrap, their riffled barrels ripping countless men from their saddles before the heavy cavalry could lower their lances and charge. Once the combat became a matter of hand-to-hand battle the Ruby Cavalry quickly folded and dissolved.

Though the next attacked belonged to the Hessian Company the knight of the Wild Geese could not be restrained and they attacked.

In 1784AD the French attempted a counterattack with some limited success. Two Medieval Infantry assaulted the combined forces outside of Bayonne, driving off the elite Shadow Knights. The 25th French Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry pursued their retreat, finally slaying them on the open plain but suffering extensive wound. Meanwhile the 37th French Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry assaulted Beaver Fort and failed in the assault upon the sturdy fortifications, their amateur attempts repulsed by the Snow Knights who, after defending the wall of the fort, bravely sallied out to destroy the arrogant Infantry.

The People’s 82nd Riders attempted to run past the Mongoose Fortress and several of the Chinese knights were cut down by the fort defenders without the fort ever coming under attack. In addition, a band of riders was still on the lose on the mainland, hunting barbarians by New Crobuzon. This was, of course, unacceptable.

Hannibal was also pleased to see that the trade embargo agreed upon by the Byzantines and Mayans had come to an end though realistically this had no practical effect on Carthage’s ability to trade.

Hannibal immediately ordered up the three elite bands of knight stationed outside of Smilin’ Bob to deal with this new threat. The commanders of the Carrot and the Stick were tasked with the immediate job. Having gained their recognition as barbarian hunters, this was the first real action seen by this company of knights. Taking advantage of the advanced railways of Carthage, the Carrot and the Stick snuck up on the 110th Riders as they lay in camp, enjoying the spoils gained from their barbarian hunting. The Carthaginian knights, fighting for their homeland, quickly overran the lax Chinese unit, capturing its battle standard for CommandoBob’s Pentagon.

The 82nd Riders also had a rough time. After losing 25% of their strength to the defenders of Fort Mongoose they lost another 50% to the catapult and trebuchet batteries fortified in the mountain fortress. The riders, limping and disorientated were finished by a charge by Lady Isabella. This earned the Lady and her men the status of an elite band. This was an award that was a long time in coming and well deserved.

Further scouting along the railway constructed on the ESC revealed the People’s 44th Pikes attempting to place a city along Carthage’s supply route. Toxic’s 2nd Cavalry was sent to correct this minor problem and the 2,000 pikes had no where to go – they were trapped in the wide open desert. The 2nd Cavalry made extremely short work of the pikes, easily gunning them down at long range, and claiming the Chinese18-19 slave bands.

The French had also committed a serious blunder Though the 25th French Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry had managed to slay the Shadow Knights they had also left the city of Bayonne garrisoned with only the 3,000 spears of the 36th French Infantry Regiment of Spears. The knights of the Order of the Dragon was committed to the assault upon the city. The spears, though dedicated to the defense of the city, were quickly overpowered by the better equipped Dragoons. The Dragons, fully expecting to ride into the city as conquerors were quickly repulsed by the 29th French Infantry Regiment of Medieval Infantry, the same men that had driven off the Shadow Knights before the 25th Regiment slew them without mercy. Their ire raised, the Toxic Knights charged the 29th Regiment. The men of the 29th Regiment, still binding their wounds from their scrap with the Shadow Knights, valiantly attempted to hold the city gates, driving off the Toxic Knights in close quarter combat.

The blood of the Carthaginians was now up. The Green Knights were sent on the attack, the lances of the heavy cavalry would not help in the close confines of the city but, rather, they dismounted and attacked as heavy foot infantry. This accomplished the task and the Green Knights set fire to the city, gathering a band of gold miners that had taken refuge in the city. These were the French37.

The newly arrived Toxic’s 8th Cavalry put down the 25th Regiment, avenging the Shadow Knights and capturing their battle standards.

1786AD was a new year and it brought new embargos. This time America had signed up the Portuguese. Hannibal disregarded the Trade Advisor’s hyperventilating. Carthage was an island unto itself.

Then Persia and the Mayans signed an embargo. Hannibal oversaw the Trade Advisor while she was given oxygen but otherwise was not distressed.

Reports from the ESC confirmed that the annoying People’s 5th Riders ambushed the Swords for Hire while they were protecting a company of Toxic Cavalry and workers trying to lay rails to the Fortress of Solitude. The crusaders were not caught off guard however and a fierce battle ensued. The Riders, over confident, rushed the crusaders believing they were defeated. In close combat the superb combat skills of the crusaders won out and the 5th Riders were slain. :D

The Trade Advisor, regaining her composure, was pleased that at least some deals could be made. The Portuguese, for example, were willing to give their world map, 9 pieces of gold and tribute of 4 pieces of gold for Carthage’s world map. The deal was made and Carthage continued to accumulate wealth.

No counterattacks were mounted by Carthage’s enemies so the carnage continued into 1788AD. OMIA had finally reached the Fortress of Solitude and the Old Man’s escorts began the healing process. The column of 16 new slaves were nearly back into Carthage’s territory. Toxic’s 9th & 10th Cavalry along with the Knights of Old Blood and Guts and the Heavy Cavalry of the Wolf Pack descended upon the French city of Brest.

The Wolf Pack, the weakest of the advance units, scouted the city and found the city garrisoned with the 7,000 pikes of the 45th and 53rd French Infantry Regiment. The Toxic Cavalry were called forward. The 9th Cavalry struck as the pikes of the 45th rushed into position. The traditional phalanx formation was virtually useless against the long range rifle of the Toxic Cavalry so the pikes made themselves small targets in their trenches. Confident of victory the 9th Cavalry pressed the attack but the tides quickly turned when it came to hand-to-hand. The heavily armored pikemen fought hard and brutalized the Carthaginian Cavalry. In the end the 45th Regiment broke ranks but it was a narrow margin of victory – far closer than would have been guessed.

The 53rd Regiment, seeing their compatriots break quickly pressed forward and Toxic’s 9th Cavalry could not press the attack, nor was it necessarily to do so. Toxic’s 10th Cavalry was right on their heels and prepared for battle. The 53rd, however, was a small band of pikes, number only 3,000 compared to the much stronger and better trained 4,000 men of the 45th Regiment. The fighting was still intense with the pikemen making a good accounting of themselves. But undersupplied and outclassed the pikes eventually surrendered rather than be slaughtered. The French38 Slave band was formed, 2 pieces of gold were seized from the city treasury and the city itself was destroyed.

Old Blood and Guts and the Wolf Pack moved to cover their wounded companions and the new slaves.

In a simultaneous effort the combined men of Toxic’s 5th, 7th, and 8th Cavalry descended upon Marseilles. The heavy cavalry of Green Knights were also in support but could not reasonable be brought to bare against the city. The city was garrisoned much the same as Brest with the 7,000 pikes of the 57th and 20th French Infantry Regiments of Pikes. The 8th Cavalry made the first run at the city trenches. Once more the fighting was fierce, for the French commanders had learned how to minimize themselves in their trenches to force the superior Carthaginians to engage them in hand-to-hand. The 8th finally pushed the 57th Pikes out of the trenches when the 20th ‘regular’ Pikes came crashing down on them, forcing them back out with their reserves.

Not to be outdone, the 5th Cavalry pressed the next attack and in some of the bloodiest moments in the Cartho-French war, the 5th Cavalry forced the 20th Pikes into the city. The battle all but over the remaining pikes refused to give up and were shot in the streets. The able bodied citizens were gathered into the French39 work crew. All of the units gathered and entrenched on a nearby mountain while the Toxic 3rd and 4th Cavalry joined the survivors so that the next attacks could be planned.

Finally, the 39th Houston Cavalry had occupied the hill below Coil Peak. Too afraid to attack the mountain itself, they intended to go after the ‘softer’ units protecting the rail line between the LoD and the mountain fortress. The elite Toxic’s 1st Cavalry repelled the invader, clearing the hill and forcing the 39th Houston to surrender their weapons.

In 1790AD the Byzantines and Portugal signed a mutual suicide pact. Too bad for Portugal that Carthage would not harm the Byzantines so long as they remained a cash cow.

But the people of Carthage were so impressed by the butt kicking being delivered to the French that they offered to add second tier to the Palace’s east wing. This way it was possible to travel from the informal ‘game room’ to the restrooms without a great deal of running up and down stairs past the open palace doorway. This would make it so that the public did not need to see Hannibal and his advisors sloppy drunk.

With no counterattack by the French, all of the wounded Carthaginian units began to retreat back to the Fortress of Solitude and the protection of OMIA. The healthy core, however, pressed the attack. Toxic’s 3rd Cavalry found Chartres with the same sad protection – 8,000 veteran pikes arranged into two Regiments of pikes; standard French defense. The 9th and 13th Pikes marched out of the city in fine form. The 3rd and 4th Cavalry attacked, unable to believe the pikes would be foolish enough to offer open combat. The Cavalry maintained their distance, knocking down row after row of pikemen. Only a final charge managed to threaten the 3rd Cavalry. A hand-to-hand skirmish broke out between the massed pikes and the 3rd Cavalry but the Carthaginians kept their heads and quickly extended their lines and retreated. The total cost was 50 dead and thrice that wounded or dismounted. The French loses were nearly the entire 8,000 men, the city of Chartres, 300,000 citizens that slaughtered as they resisted (no slave bands from a size 4 city?), 5 pieces of gold from the treasury and a fleet of galleys that were in the city harbor.

The final battle of 1790AD the Wild Geese took issue with the 43rd San Diego Regiment of Longbows that were snooping around Fort Mongoose. The Irishmen slipped out of the fort at night and found the 43rd Regiment bedded down for the night. Their guards were too lax and by the time sentries realized what was happening the Wild Geese were in the camp, swords to their throats. The 43rd Longbows surrendered without firing a shot. The captured men were used in a prisoner exchange and thus were not available for enslavement.

In a nice deal with the Sumerians the Trade Advisor recommended selling the secrets of medicine (which was now widely known) for the Sumerian world map, 58 pieces of gold and the tribute of 41 pieces of gold for 20 cycles. This was excellent. After a diplomatic check it was determined that there were no entanglements with Carthage’s current wars and the deal was struck.

By the end of 1790AD things were looking brighter for Carthage. Carthage’s treasury was a robust 1904 pieces of gold. Sanitation would be learned in only 2 years and Carthage was going to reap on income of 284 pieces of gold in the same time span until new research began. Total Tribute to Carthage was at an all time high of 383 pieces of gold every cycle, and though this windfall was not expected to continue it was very good news.

As for civilizations:
Eliminated: Japan, Ottomans, Korea, India
Client States: Dutch, Persians, Byzantines and Sumerians.
Defeated: France, Portugal, Hittites
Enemies: Mayan, Chinese, Spain
Nemesis: America

Jesus, I didn't realise the Dutch were that backward. Good thing they can build the Temple of Artemis now, right?
I laughed when supply depots were mentioned. I'm a heavy StarCraft II gamer, and supply depots are a building for the Terran(human) race. I couldn't help but think the Americans would appear on Hannibal's continent to put down some of these:

Jesus, I didn't realize the Dutch were that backward. Good thing they can build the Temple of Artemis now, right?

Well they could if I hadn't built it already. Yeah, I guess imprisoning a warlord AI in a tundra actively prevents them from researching anything for the remaining 500 turns of the game. Oh, and until recently they didn't know anyone other than me, Xerxes and maybe Mursilis. William might have known the Japanese, he likely never knew we shared (in the loosest sense of the word :p) a continent with India, Korea or the Ottomans!

If the supply depots will help with my units costs then I'll work on building a few. :D

POST 200!

All odd numbered cavalry units must be named after characters from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. In your stories, the pony the unit is named after must be the leader of that unit, they must act as they would in the show (many of them have wikia articles, don't worry). As to how the ponies get there, I'd suggest something involving them coming from the heavens as a blessing from Sparthage to his favorite people. (Move to Static Orders)
