Spoiler :

By the Dawn of 1160AD Carthage was the true power of the world though the cursed F8 graph, the latest means of ‘divination’ used by the priest of Carthage, placed Hannibal’s great civilization firmly in the ‘mediocre’ category. This was most unsatisfactory after all the people of Carthage had accomplished.

Three elite bands of cavalry had arrived outside Kanesh: The Knights of the White Mountain, The Dark Brotherhood and the Maggot Makers. These three elite bands faced only one regular formation of Hittite spears – the 33rd 3Ax. The foolish Hittites had once more founded their city on the open grasslands – prefect land for a cavalry charge. The Hittite cities also lacked any defensive works other than what the spear formation could provide.

The Maggot Makers took the honor of the first charge against Kanesh. The Maggot Makers swept around the flank of the spears and easily routed them into the ocean, drowning those that would not surrender. The city was razed and the remaining population, including the surrendering warriors of the spear formation, was pressed into slavery. These slaves became the Hittite09. [Note – somewhere I must have missed noting that Hannibal picked up two other Hittites slaves – I found two unnamed bands that became Hittie07-08???]

1160 AD was also the year that the first reinforcements arrived for POP’s Elite Rangers, the first time they would command more than their own army. The Silver Hawks and the Paladins of the Silver Flame had landed nearby and were prepared to join them. The transport ship was the ICS Kyoto’s Destruction G-01. The galley had been quite busy and would be for some time. At the same time, ICS Battle of Amsterdam CU-01 and ICS Charge of Aabraxan CU-02 were preparing to join G-01 to provide coverage pending their scuttling as the Carthaginian fleet grew. For CU-01 and CU-02 could not carry slaves or troops and thus were schedule for disbanding, all in due time, of course.

POP’s Elite Rangers took advantage of the landing of additional forces to go rampaging through the Hittite lands in 1180 AD, ravaging the land in the Hittite core though their capital city had not yet been found. The Ranger had, however, encountered a band of Hittite knights, a veteran band, the 1st kHCh Formation of knights.

In 1190 AD the great wonder of CommandoBob’s Observatory had been created at Caseyboy97’s Asylum.

1190ADCommandoBobsObservatory.jpg

The Science Advisor appeared before Hannibal’s with a huge smile. Indeed, all of Carthage was in celebration. So pleased were the people at the great honor constructed for CommandoBob that they agreed to add a vaulted ceiling to the throne room. There was no mention of a door to go with the vaulted ceiling.

1190ADVaultedCeiling.jpg

“Great Hannibal! The city of Caseboy97’s Asylum is producing 48 beakers of science all on its own! This means that we are certain to maintain a technological advance over our enemies from this moment forward! Though we may need to trade, the trades should be much to our advantage!”

Hannibal delighted in these words and joined the Science Advisor in the celebration.

It was a good thing that Carthage had constructed the great Observatory because at the same time the Hittites had convinced Leonardo to construct his workshop in Hattusas. This was a horrible coup on the Americans and Mayans who had no great wonder left to construct when their bid for the workshop fell through. This made Hannibal smile with delight.

Interestingly, POP’s Rangers witnessed a struggle between a band of Hittite Longbowmen, the 4th 2Ps Archers and a rank of Mayan Knights – the Jade Knights of Tikai. The Jade Knights prevailed in the combat and then fled back towards Tikai. Hannibal was glad to see these two nations fighting. It would make the conquest of the world much easier if they fought amongst each other and not just against Carthage.

By 1200AD the Sparthaginian Fleet was at sail off the coast of Persia in route to the ESC.

1200ADSparthaginianFleet.jpg

The Carthaginian navy was finally the terror of the high seas!

This was also the year that Hannibal’s Science advisor appeared once more. “Great Hannibal, the Americans have learned the secrets of Gunpowder.”

“This does not sound good.” Hannibal grumbled.

“No, Hannibal, but it is not a huge cause for concern. We should be able to easily trade for this knowledge later. I do not see any reason to be overly worried.”

“This is good.” Hannibal exhaled with relief. The Military Advisor had accompanied the Science Advisor – the two were nearly inseparable these days. “I agree with this, Hannibal. Though it will make conquest more difficult in the future as this knowledge spreads, we still have plenty of units to press the attack on the ESC. If anything it will help us to thin our units to make way for those that are better.”

Hannibal found this to be cold blooded but he understood the need. Carthage could not upgrade its units – even if it had the money there was no easy way to transport units from one location to another for refitting. Carthage’s men would need to fight with the weapons issued and make the best use of them.

Hannibal dismissed his advisors. He prayed that they were right.

In 1210 AD the Trade Advisor recommended two new trades. Persia was to receive Literature for 18 pieces of gold – all they possessed. China was to receive Monotheism for their entire treasury – 39 pieces of gold and tribute of 2 pieces of gold per budget cycle for a total of 40 more gold over 20 cycles.

Then in 1220 AD China come up with an additional 48 pieces of gold and tribute of 4 gold per budget cycle for Theology. Hannibal was beginning to like Mao of the Chinese.

The Americans were so jealous of the new Carthaginian-Chinese trade route that their Ambassador demanded an audience with Hannibal. Hannibal sent for his Trade, Foreign and Military (based on previous experience with the Hittites) Advisors. This was wise for the Ambassador walked into the Carthaginian throne room with great arrogance.

“Weak Hannibal of the insignificant Carthaginian cowards. Lincoln demands that you give us 38 piece of gold as tribute. It is the least you can do in gratitude.”

1220ADAmericanThreat.jpg

Hannibal only thinly concealed his smile. “Gratitude? For what? America is a small backwater nation with little to offer in trade that it did not gain from Carthage first. You owe us tribute of 16 pieces of gold for many more years. So you come to me with threats? This is the height of foolishness. Just look at the Hittites to see what happens when this occurs.”

“I do not like your insults, Hannibal. We have heard of your mother and it seems your appetite is as large as hers.” The American ambassador snapped. “Perhaps you think you can win a war against the great American Armada, for we have heard how you had to turn over control of you fleet to those miscreants, the priests of Sparthage. These same priests tried to do this in America as well. As they so liked the water, we drown them all! This is what is meant by ‘separation of church and state’.”

Hannibal tried to keep his anger in check. To insult Hannibal’s mother and the wise priests of Sparthage was unforgivable – something he would not forget. “If it is insults you do not like, then I would suggest you buy Lincoln something to hide his ugly mug. He looks mighty silly with that dumb red hat; one might mistake him for a common street whore. ”

“Base Hannibal, I have been ordered to deliver upon Carthage a Declaration of War if you do not comply. Do not be so foolish!” The Ambassador growled.

Hannibal listened briefly to his Military Advisor. “Great Hannibal, the Americans have little for us to fear and the Mayans and Hittites separate our forces – for now. It is a pitiful offering against our great armies. Send your sons to be slaughtered by Carthaginian lances and swords. It will be our pleasure to give you offerings of blood worth 38 pieces of gold.”

Hannibal turned back to the Ambassador. “Carthage will not be extorted. Where is your Declaration of War?”

The Ambassador visibly paled at this and patted his pockets. “Er . . . I seem to have left it in my other doublet. I will need to get back to you . . .”

The Carthaginians laughed heartily as the American ambassador scurried from the throne room. Hannibal had yet another chuckle when word reached him that a band of Hittite settlers was found wandering the area around Hattusha.

1230ADHittiteSettler.jpg

The band was completely unguarded! Unable to resist, POP’s Elite Ranger quickly snatched them up, creating the Hittite10-11 slave bands.

A new trade became possible with India in 1230AD. Carthage gave Gandhi Theology for 24 pieces of gold and tribute of 5 gold per cycle.

The world was rather peaceful at the close of 1250 AD. Carthage was busy moving its fleet into position for a full assault on the ESC. It was clear to Hannibal that America had to become a target and soon. The secrets of Banking were only 10 years away. Once Carthage had banks it would be possible for Bob and Betty to multiple the money of Carthage with their accounting practices. Hannibal would be mighty pleased to have this new gold flowing into Carthage’s treasury – every city in Carthage was already pre-building structures for their new banks!

The best news of all was that Old Man Iron’s Knight army had finally landed upon the ESC and its relief bands of knights were in route as well.

1250ADOldManIronhasLanded.jpg

Finally, Carthage had but 30 years left on its build of the Pentagon of CommandoBob.

Or will it require us to build the United Nations to get Hannibal his own private potty? :D

The Sistine Chapel is the Crayola Wonder of the World, built in 880AD in New Hannibalopolis. Hannibal would much like to build Bachs as well but he didn’t want to detour to Music to pick it up. He figured he could trade for it from the other, lesser (AI) Civs. As it was not devoted to Sparthage, however, it seems as if he must place Music as a priority so that Sparthage does not get mad at him (not a good situation as they control the entire fleet)! He is currently in the process of building Smiths in Caseboy97’s Asylum. Not sure he can learn Music in the next 17 turns though. :p

Raze one of your cities, then rebuild it with the exact same name.

As CommandoBob noted, this goes against Rule #3. I might entertain the idea if this were not a 5CC game on a huge map. However, this does bring up an interesting topic. I was actually considering disbanding a city and founding a new city on the ESC. The city would probably be hopelessly corrupt and Hannibal can’t even rush the FP because he can’t build it. Perhaps he could if he captured enough cities in one turn (managed through diplomacy like with the armies?) and then rushed it with a MGL? I've never noticed if the FP message comes up after the limit is reached on the following turn. If so, he can never build it. One advantage of this would be to have a port city on the other continent, though it would not be of much use before navigation/magnetism. Otherwise there will be no more luxuries until airports?!?

Any and all Cavalry must be named as such:
Toxic's 1st Cavalry
Toxic's 2nd Cavalry
Toxic's 3rd Cavalry

And so on.

I vote for a space race victory so Hannibal can have the moon for his summer holiday.

I assume this means actually cavalry gained from Military Tradition? Hannibal already has many ancient cavs in the field that have been named. It may also contradict pending Order #1 to rename every unit. I’m okay with naming all of Carthage's cavs this way if it not objectionable to others.

The victory achieved must be conquest.
To add to this;

You cannot achieve victory before you have constructed the SDI defense.

Victory by conquest, I believe, can be accomplished. Space Race or victory held until SDI is probably not likely. If Hannibal cannot win by conquest before SDI, it is likely that it will be resolved by histograph. That may be pessimistic as I’ve never played a 5CC before. Maybe with hospitals, factories, etc. it will be possible accelerate science to the point that Hannibal can achieve this??? Particularly if Hannibal is only left with the Netherlands as a client state ‘under guard’.

I will endeavor to have Hannibal do his best to comply!

And a copy of the most recent save:

Yeah, I meant cavalry from military tradition. As for my SDI order, scrap it and replace it with this:

You may only achieve victory by conquering the Netherlands last.

The Priests of Sparthage object to toxic's last order and request that only the even-numbered unit names be used.

...so that we can all enjoy renaming units.

You can only win after crippling an enemy nation with nuclear weapons (Hitting atleast 50% of their cities with nukes)

This works, right?

You can only win after crippling an enemy nation with nuclear weapons (Hitting atleast 50% of their cities with nukes)

This works, right?

I will certainly endeavor to do my best with this one. Ordinarily I would cheerfully agree. I think Spain would look great in orange. :nuke:

I just don't know that Hannibal will be able to research his way to nukes. :( He'll need to make it to Rocketry and Space Flight - and probably satellites for ICBMs to make this come true. Of course, all He'll need is one nuke sub and one tactical nuke if the civ only has 2 cities. :D But a nuke sub will require Fission. :dunno:

Hannibal will do his best. We are almost halfway through the game and we are still stuck in the Middle Ages. :crazyeye: Hannibal needs to pick up Music, Chem, Metal, Physics, ToG, Mag to close the Middle Ages. Hopefully He"ll get one or two of them from the AI. Then 15 IA techs and if Hannibal use ToE to pick up Space & Sats, then all Hannibal has left to research in the MA is Rocketry. I"ll probably want Sanitation too.

All told that is 22 techs (maybe a few less) in 270 turns. Currently techs are taking 20+ turns each. It doesn't look good.

Orders Completed this Set:

None.

Once again in two parts. :D
Spoiler :
The year 1255AD began with a whimper. Most of Carthage’s units were moving into place. The final knight for Old Man Iron’s army had arrived and many other units were also being deposited on the ESC. Carthage still had plenty of units on the mainland to control the Indians. When it came time to trade, however, Hannibal paid close attention.

“Great Hannibal. It would seem that luck is in our favor.” The Trade Advisor said with a grant, sweeping gesture. “The foolish Americans have been selling their knowledge of Gunpowder making it nearly valueless. The Mayans will agree to a straight trade – Astrology for Gunpowder. As we will learn Banking in by 5 more years, we will still be well positioned to bargain with all of the lesser nations.”

Hannibal nodded, for this made good sense. Astrology was also well known now. Carthage had to seize any opportunity it could to profit from its research. But it was marked that both the Mayans and the Americans were in sore need of pillaging to keep them in their place. Hannibal was also greatly satisfied that once more the citizens of Carthage were working faster – by nearly one hundred percent! Orders and developments that once took 10 years to complete now took but 5 years to complete. Hannibal was greatly pleased with his people and the wisdom of the gods.

As Old Man Iron’s Army (OMIA) was forming, POP’s Elite Rangers ventured forth once more to cause damage in the land of the Hittites.

Thus it was in 1260 AD that the Portuguese Ambassador invited himself for a visit with Hannibal. Annoyed, Hannibal called for his advisors and his guards. Then he made the ambassador wait for another 30 minutes before motioning for the guards to let him enter. Thus far ambassadors had only made him unhappy. He was beginning to question the wisdom of allowing these lazy diplomats to spend time enjoying the comforts of Smilin’ Bob and its little blue pills.

“Greatings from Carthage to Portugal. What is it that I, the Great Hannibal of the Godly Carthaginians can do for you today, emissary of Henry the Wise?” Hannibal asked pleasantly.

“Henry is indeed wise and you would do well not to disregard his demands.” The Portuguese ambassador said briskly.

Hannibal sat back and smiled. His military advisor leaned down to whisper. “The Portuguese ‘army’, if that is what you wish to call it, is a ragged band of mercenaries and swordsmen. They are hardly even a concern for us, Great Hannibal.”

Hannibal waited for another few minutes, pretending to consult with this Military Advisor. In truth they were talking about the best way to boil Henry in his own arrogance. Seeing the ambassador become impatient, Hannibal finally turned back.

“And what are these demands?” Hannibal asked sweetly.

“Do not toy with Portugal, dullard Hannibal. We have heard that your mother consumes everything around her, including your attention. But you should listen closely to this.” The ambassador said dismissively. “Give us the knowledge of Chivalry and we shall allow to your remain upon this globe. The transfer must begin immediately. Any delay could put you in the unfortunate position of facing Henry’s wrath!”

1260ADPortugalDemands.jpg

Hannibal laughed good-heartedly though his eyes narrowed at the mention of his mother. “Is that all that you want? Knowledge of Chivalry? Done! You shall have it forthwith I shall send my armies to Henry to show him what a knight looks like up close. Then he may decided if he really wishes to know any more!”

The entire Carthaginian council chortled as the ambassador stood dumbfounded. Hannibal jabbed a finger at the arrogant bastard. “Just give me your Declaration of War and we shall commence this learning exercise!”

“Um . . . when I said wrath, I meant his verbal rebuke at your lack of manners! Have you no wish to be good neighbors?” The ambassador back peddled.

“Perhaps you did not notice the fence around . . . ALL OF CARTHAGE! Stay out of our yard and we shall get along just fine. Now, if you do not have a Declaration of War kindly remove your miserable self before I find a dungeon for you to rot in!”

The council continued to laugh as the Portuguese ambassador ran for the door, tail tucked firmly between his legs. Once they were alone the Science Advisor turned to Hannibal to announce that Carthage had learned the secrets of banking. All pre-builds were now being converted to banks.

“And what shall we research next?” Hannibal wondered.

“Goodly Hannibal, I would recommend Economics. With this skill we can build a Trade Company that is run by a man with wooden leg named Smith.”

“Smith? What’s the name of his other leg?” Hannibal inquired.

“Er . . . no, lord. The man is named Smith. His leg doesn’t have a name.” The Domestic Advisor said hastily. “If we can attract Smith to our lands, he will build a great Trade Network that will support – with no coast to Carthage – improvements such as markets, banks and harbors and perhaps a great deal more.”

“And if we research this knowledge, we can simply trade for Chemistry once it is known.” The Science Advisor amended.

“Then let it be, if all are in favor?” Hannibal inquired.

There was unanimous consent and so Carthage’s path was chosen.

Things began to get interesting again in 1265AD. The attack on the Hittites was ready to begin afresh.

1265ADAttackontheHittites.jpg

The intent was not to deprive the Hittites of many cities – for Hannibal did not wish to increase the power of another civilization that would need to be dealt with later. Instead, the focus would be upon pillaging them to slow them down.

Even so, the herd needed to be culled a little. The first victim would be the city of Hattusha. Finally the Hittites were fielding units worthy of battle. A well armored band of pikes – the 1st 4Ax Formation of Pikes guarded the city. Old Man Iron took the honor of the first attack on the city, sending is army of knights to encircle the city, attacking the line of pikes from every direction. The attack was flawless – OMIA easily cut down the pikes to reveal a ‘second line of defense’, the 13th 3Ax Formation of Spears. These were left for the Maggot Makers. Likewise the charge was nearly flawless, the Maggot Makers suffering only minor wounds as they crossed over the pitiful earthen battlements created by the frantic spear formation. Hattusha was razed to the ground. A band of spice workers were caught in the city. They, along with the survivors of the destroyed city, made the Hittite12-13 slave bands.

Though a joyous occasion and a first ‘win’ over the Hittite core, there was also sad news. The Science Advisor reported that America too had learned the secrets of Banking, just a step behind Carthage. Something had to done about America.

In 1270AD the people rejoiced as Amsterdam’s influence grew to encompass the nearby horses, making that resource secure for Carthage forever more. The new problem was saltpeter. Unfortunately there were no nearby sources for Carthage. The closest ones were in old Japanese/Ottoman lands. A Numindian Mercenary would be sent immediately to guard the new resource as the workers made a trade road for its use.

The people of Carthage were so happy that they offered to build a third level to the palace.

This would include a nice view and a place to relax with close guests. It was not fit for receiving formal guests – that would remain in the Great Hall (that was STILL without a door). Even so, it held a pool table and a wet bar, so Hannibal did not complain.

1270 AD was comprised mostly of units on the move. OMIA’s caught the 7th 2Ps Formation of Longbows in the open and trampled them with ease. More units including some of the captured catapults were transferred to the ESC. They would not be needed on the mainland.

The first bank of Carthage was constructed in Amsterdam in 1275AD. Bob from Account Temps immediately set to work within the financial institution to increase the income in the city treasury from 28 gold every budgeting cycle to 38 gold. This was a huge boon for Carthage. With this new income Carthage could sustain its scientific research at a much lower deficit.

In 1280AD a great event occurred. The five sided wonder of the world, the CommandoBob Pentagon, had been constructed.

1280ADPentagonbuild.jpg

This building would house all of Carthage’s war memorials and memorabilia. This build would also house additional strategic military planners that would allow the massive armies of Carthage to add an additional unit to their strength, making them mighty and powerful.

Hannibal now had a decision to make regarding the war on the ESC. Many of Carthage’ units were on the ESC now but more were coming. Carthage was nearly ready to start mass producing units to throw into action. The roads had been completed. But how to proceed? Hannibal and his Military Advisor took a long time to consider. The war against the Hittites would need to resolve itself soon to maintain the balance until it was time to purge the ESC. Carthage actually held an important strip of land – a narrow slice 300 miles long.

1280ADBattlePlan.jpg

By fortifying this line, Carthage could divide the ESC and eliminate enemies on either side without the hassle of a two front war to prevent resettlement. There would be encroachment, of course, but minimal and only by boat. Such colonies would be easy pickings without reinforcement by land. At the same time the fortresses would allow his units a place to rest, heal, and defend. With OMIA and the POP Elite Rangers pillaging all of the roads leading to the defensive positions, Carthage could execute its wars without challenge. OMIA would continue to pillage the Hittites until they would bend their knee and give something worth the 66 pieces of gold they owed to Carthage. Then Old Man Iron would command his army in the lands of the Mayans, destroying their infrastructure. After a brief stint there, he would do great damage in America. By the time this was done the war against the Byzantines and Sumerians should be concluded – they would either be destroyed or mere client states.

The Hittites had begun to mobilize but it was already too late. The 12th & 7th 2Ps Formations of Longbows were seen close at hand. In addition, the 5th Mayan Spears that were under the direction of the Halach Uinic of Tikal were observed by POP’s Elite rangers as they moved along a nearby mountain ridge, masking a small band of Mayan settlers, no doubt in route to their claim new land left open by the war. They, of course, would be easy victims in but a few short years. After pillaging a nearby road, POP’s Elite Rangers struck the 5th Pikes.

The 7th Longbows fell pray to OMIA as it pillaged the area around Hattusas. During the battle, which was a complete slaughter more than a fight, a veteran band of Hittite knights was identified in the far field – it was the 1st kHCh Formation of knights again, this time protecting the 9th Longbows.

In 1285AD POP’s Elite Rangers were on the outskirts of Haran, a large city with much Hittite potential. The Hittites were hard pressed from their war with the Mayans and the pillaging of the Carthaginian knights. So much so that there were only two defending units – the 14th and 22nd 3Ax Formations of Spears. The Rangers made a frontal assault against the city. The defenders had no walls and the land was flat, the approaches open. The Rangers enveloped the city, denying the formations their strongest defense – the phalanx. Rather, the spearmen were forced to ring the city and fight one-on-one with the much better armed and armored swordsmen of the Rangers. By the end of a long day of fighting the 14th and 22nd had ceased to exist as fighting units. The survivors had withdrawn into the city itself and recruited additional men from the city’s population to stand with them.

Hannibal’s larger plan was also beginning to come into focus. The Byzantines, Mayans and Americans were all moving settlers to the available land. This, of course, could not be allowed. It would soon be time for the Hittites to have a rest. The Mayan’s would become victims in a few more years. For the Byzantines, the time was now. The 4th Regiments of Comitatenses Spears had been seen on a nearby hill with a group of settlers. Did Theodora actually think she would push Carthage off the land it had cleared by right of war?

First Hannibal requested an audience with none other than Spannibal. If war was to be declared against the Byzantines their powerful Dromons would need to be destroyed. Theodora’s powerful fleet would be difficult for the Sparthaginian navy.

“Great Hannibal, we are prepared for this great contest.” The priests of Sparthage declared. “In fact we yearn to show the people of Carthage that their faith is just. Nearly our entire fleet is in the area and ICS Battle of Amsterdam CU-01 and ICS Charge of Aabraxan CU-02 are both scheduled to be scuttled anyway. If they fall in battle it will be to the glory of Carthage and we have enough ships in the area to rescue the sailors.”

Hannibal was much pleased with this. And he knew that it would not take long for the land units of Carthage to overrun the northern provinces of the Byzantines – a prerequisite for a new Declaration of war against the Sumerians.

Hannibal summoned the Byzantine ambassador. The ambassador, much the inferior of Carthage, bowed low in his presence. “Powerful Hannibal, what would you have of our mistress Theodora? We have not knowledge or gold to give Carthage.”

“That is well, for I need not either of these from the Byzantines.” Hannibal said mildly. “All that I require is that the entire Byzantine Empire bends its knee in the service of Carthage. That is the price for stealing what Carthage owns.”

“We have stolen nothing, Hannibal.” The ambassador bristled. So the man had a backbone? Hannibal liked strength, though foolishness was not a good companion. “You must be mistaken.”

“I am not mistaken. Did we not destroy Ceullo of the Sumerians and now the city of Sardica has sprung up like a weed?” Hannibal said, eyes narrowing. “No, there is no mistake. You have stolen land that the people of Carthage won by right of conquest. It was to be a golf course for our citizens. Now we have another city that must be razed. So be it. You have our declaration of war.”

1285ADDOWonByz.jpg

The ambassador was sent scurrying in fear while Hannibal and his advisors chuckled. Hannibal sent word to the church of Sparthage so that the naval engagements could begin on Carthage’s terms. Almost immediately word arrived that ICS Battle of Amsterdam CU-01 had engaged the Dromon fleet known as Theodora’s Pride. The flotilla advanced, Greek fire leaping from the dragon-like maws carved in the bow. The small Carthaginian Curraghs were smaller and more maneuverable, slipping into the ranks so that the horrid fire of the Greeks – a people unknown to Hannibal, perhaps another fictitious people like the Romans no doubt – spread amongst the Byzantine dromons rather than the Carthaginian ships. Well placed arrows slew helmsmen and Captains and the fleet, burning and wounded, fell into disarray. The defeat of the dromons was a shock to Theodora and the Byzantines. It was only the beginning, Hannibal smiled, congratulating Spannibal and giving full praise to Sparthage’s wisdom.

Next the Knights of Flowers hunted down the 4th Regiments of Comitatenses Spears. The spears hadn’t the time to entrench in the foot hills before the knights struck. The charge of the Knights was perfect in all respects. The untested 4th Spears fought valiantly to protect the settlers. A veteran band, the spears tried to give the Byzantine citizens a chance to escape. Their efforts honorable, they were never able to form a strong line. The Knights strung the defenders out over a long area and while the knights remained fresh upon their horses. The spears began to lose strength. Footsore and weary, the spears were isolated in small bands. Then the knights attacked, defeating the straggling infantry in detail. Not a single knight lay wounded at the end. The Byzantine settlers were rounded into two new slave bands: Byzantine01-02.

So great was the victory that the commander of the Knights was given the title Lord of Flowers, another Great Leader for the people of Carthage.

1285ADLordofFlowers.jpg

Invading the Byzantine lands around Trebizong, the Knights of Cold Steel quickly encountered two additional units – the 10th Regiments of Comitatenses Spears, a band of regulars, and an elite band of forging warriors known as Theodora’s Servants. These pitiful men would not stand between Carthage and victory. Cold Steel charged the 10th Regiment, hacking down the arrogant spearmen with great courage but with poor judgment. Their rage up, the knights would not withdraw and the end result was a casualty toll equaling nearly 40% of their numbers in horses and men. The way cleared, Aabraxan’s Honor Guard overran Theodora’s Servants as if they were little more than a speed bump.

Very quickly Aabraxan was met by the Dark Brotherhood, The Knights of the White Mountain, And the Knights of the Chalice, assembling in the fields overlooking Trebizong.

A decision also had to be made regarding Persia. Hannibal drew his council together so that the fate of Xerxes’ pitiful people could be decided.

“Great Hannibal, it appears as if they cannot grow much if at all.” The Domestic Advisor said. Hannibal trusted her above all others, for she was wise and had enabled Carthage to grow powerful in spite of its small number of cities and many golf courses. “The city has scarce resources of food. It will take a very long time before they can produce anything more. Our attention should be placed on Gandhi and India. We should once more reduce them and push them into the jungle they so love.”

“We can also use them as an additional source of income, Great Hannibal.” The Trade Advisor reminded them all. “We can plunder their treasury for our own gains to maintain our research. They’ll never be a threat again. As we cannot yet transport the defenders from the island anyway, we might as well continue to hunt down barbarians and keep an eye on Xerxes.”

All of the advisors of Carthage agreed. Newly produced units would be directed towards India with an eye on removing them from the continent, though this would take some time to accomplish.

Xerxes was offered currency for all of Persia’s treasury: 24 pieces of gold. They would also be required to pay an additional 20 pieces of gold by tribute of 1 piece of gold for every budgeting cycle – every 5 years for the next 100 years.

Part 2

Spoiler :
In 1290AD the Bank of New Crobuzon was built. Bob from Account Temps, Betty at his side, quickly went to work with this new resources and transformed an income of 52 pieces of gold into 64 pieces of gold, increasing the gold flowing into the treasure and what could be spent on science.

Reconnaissance by the Carthaginian armies revealed a small, straggling Hittite army on the move. The 1st kHCh Formation of knights was now within range, leaving the 9th Longbows to trail behind. A new group of longbows had appeared to the Northeast of Carthage’s massed military – the 14th Longbows. OMIA reported another band, the 5th Longbows near their lines – more fodder for the powerful army. At the same time, Old Man Iron also reported a band of French setters protected by the 2nd Spear Regiment of the French Foreign Legion.

Before anything else could be done, POP’s Elite Rangers had to finish the assault upon Harran. The 22nd 3Ax Formations of Spears had reconstituted its ranks by absorbing the battered men of the 14th to fill their companies and pressing the citizens of Harran to fill the remaining gaps. The Rangers captured the city but only after some substantial losses. The swordsmen rushed the city, spirits high but this was an error. The 22nd fought better than expected and only the experienced commanders of the Pointy Stick regiment carried the day, earning the laurels of an elite band for the service of their men.

When word of the victory reached Hannibal it came with other news. The Great Lighthouse of the Hittites was to be found in Harran and Carthage now controlled this great wonder.

1290ADGLH.jpg

But it could not be held. The command of pi4t were explicit. The city had to be burned and burn it did. The citizens were rounded up into the Hittite14-15 work bands. These workers and the Rangers began their withdrawn towards the Carthaginian LZ.

It was unlucky for the 14th 2Ps Longbows that they were unsupported in their advance against Carthage’s main army. Both the 2nd and 3rd Catapult Batteries were well positioned in the woods and the 1st Battery was being moved into a support role. The 2nd and 3rd Batteries opened up as soon as the 14th came into range. While the 2nd missed its mark the 3rd was more fortunate, its massive rocks falling squarely into the ranks of bowmen, killing more then 30% of their numbers. The slaughter was appalling.

It was then time for men of Carthage to pay in blood. The Maggot Makers were dispatched to finish the reeling 14th. Their destruction was complete though the Maggots suffered more wounds than might e expected, taking over 30% casualties as the strength of Hittite longbows took their toll on the weaker armor of the ancient cavalry.

The solid Paladins of the Silver Flame were called to attack the 1st kHCh Formation of knights. This would be a hard contest. The 1st kHCh were a veteran band, well armored and armed. The Paladins were an elite band of ancient cavalry. It was nearly an even match. Unfortunately the odds were not as favorable as they seemed. The honorable Paladins charged by the crafty 1st Knights absorbed the attack, suffering more than 50% casualties. Then, with amazing bravery the knights broke through the center of the Paladins. The elite band held firm but it was not enough. Their back broken and many of their commanders dead upon the field, the men broke.

The Regulators followed the charge and suffered at the tough core of veteran knights that had destroyed the Paladins. The Hittites made a serious accounting of themselves in the battle. Nearly 70% of the Regulators were dead or without a mount. This made the band combat ineffective and vulnerable. The Regulators had, however, liberated the captured remains of the Paladins. They were quickly given passage back to Carthage to form the cohort to a new band of cavalry. This band was reconstituted as the Paladins of the Silver Ash.

After the severe punishment the Carthaginians had suffered at the LZ, it was time for OMIA to make up the loss. Pillaging their way through the land of the Hittites, the army brushed aside the 5th 2Ps Longbows without a single loss.

The Battle with the Hittites was nearly complete and it was a good thing. The Mayan settlers needed to be soon addressed. But the Battle with the Byzantines was just getting hot. Carthage’s cavalry were on the outskirts of Trebizond. Before then, arrayed for battle were the 24th and 21st Regiments of Comitatenses Spears, men hastily assembled and given only rudimentary training. They knew which end of the spear had a point but not much else.

The Knights of the Chalice led the attack on Trebizond while Aabraxan’s Honor Guard, the Dark Brotherhood and The Knights of the White Mountain sorted their ranks for attack. The Byzantine spears struggled to get into position but the unfortunate 24th Regiment was crushed before it could draw into a phalanx formation. The attack did not come from the Knights of the Chalice as planned, however (somehow I selected the wrong unit when I made the attack :crazyeye:). The knights had once more been in their cups and had begun to lead their horses in great circles around the city like great fools. Instead, the Dark Brotherhood, moving under the shroud of confusion caused by the drunk Knights of the Chalice, masked their drunken companions, breaking formation only at the last moment to strike the flank of the confused spear formation.

The spread of Carthaginian cavalry made it impossible for either of the spear formations to anticipate a line of battle – the exact confusion the attacking commanders wished to foster amongst their ranks. Aabraxan’s Honor Guard had the honor or overrunning the remaining defenders, routing the 21st into the city and setting it ablaze and rounding up the Byzantine03 work band. A nearby band of spice miners were also rounded up by the Knights of the Chalice once the commanders finally got them sorted out, sobered and back into formation. This became the Byzantine04.

ICS Cunning of Ivriz CA-02 and ICS Curse of the Black Hand C-01 dropped four invading ancient cavalry beside Chalcedon, terrifying the 29th and 32nd Regiments of Comitatenses Spears. The invading units were comprised of the Scourge of Amsterdam, the Black Guard*, the Dark Knights, and the Iron Lances*.

In 1295AD it was finally time to turn the attack against the Mayans. They had moved settlers into place too close to the Carthaginian lines to ignore any further. But first peace with the Hittites was in order. Hannibal ordered the Hittite ambassador retrieved from this imprisonment. The man looked ragged and horrorstruck.

“I pray, for your sake, that Mursilis is willing to repay the debt owed to Carthage?” Hannibal asked sweetly.

“What is it you wish of the Hittites, merciful Hannibal.” The Ambassador spoke with great humility for he knew the Hittites were but a shadow of their former glory. Never again would they have such power.

“Just this – you will give all 35 pieces of gold in your treasury.” The Foreign Advisor intoned, following the script agreed upon. “That will satisfy half of your debt. We have also enslaved enough of your people to form 15 bands of workers. These we shall keep. But this is not all. You must also give us the cities of Tulum and Karhuyuk which we fully intend to burn, slaying every citizen in each city as a warning to the rest of the Hittites.”

The ambassador spread his hands in defeat. “Great Hannibal, how can we say anything but yes? Please take these things and leave us in peace.”

So a peace, at least tentatively, was struck. The ambassador paused at the door.

“Have you more for us to consider?” Hannibal demanded of the defeated Hittite.

“Great Hannibal. Our sale of Tulum and Karhuyuk leaves us with five additional bands of workers that are now without tasks. As you value slave so highly, perhaps you would consider a trade?”

Hannibal thought on this. “And what would you like in return?”

“The secrets of banking, kind lord.” The ambassador said.

Hannibal quickly conferred with his advisors. “The technology is certainly worth more, Lord Hannibal.” The science advisor said.

“But we should carefully consider this.” The Domestic Advisor countered. “Depriving them of these workers will prevent them from repairing the damage we have caused. These slaves will be delivered to Amsterdam via Hittite merchant vessels. We know how valuable our own workers are to our greatness. This will be a severe blow to their nation.”

“Banking is also a known tech, Great Hannibal. Its proliferation will not cause us damage. No nation can afford to pay us the price we deserve. Five slaves will be worth much gold to us.” The Trade Advisor said.

“I agree, Lord Hannibal.” The Military Advisor added. “Without infrastructure they will be vulnerable when we reopen hostilities in a few hundred years.”

Thus it was the deal was struck and the Hittite16-20 were formed in Amsterdam.

This business concluded Hannibal ordered that the ambassador of the Mayans be brought before him. The guards brought the ambassador quickly. The arrogant man had a pipe firmly clenched in his teeth, rancid smoke filling the air.

“What does Carthage want of the great Mayan people, Hannibal?”

It was well known that the Mayans were furious with Carthage. Hannibal smiled inside. They would have far more reasons to be unhappy in a moment.

“The Mayan people have angered the might of Carthage. We tried to make an example of the Byzantines, but you have not learned this lesson. Lands cleared by Carthaginian armies belongs to Carthage. Your warriors and settlers have violated our land and now they must pay for this transgression.” Hannibal said with a savage grin.

“You must be sick, Hannibal.” The ambassador said dismissively. “You are fighting a war with the Byzantines and the Hittites. You cannot afford another war. This land is ours for the claiming and you cannot stop the might of the Mayans. For we have seen the future and our great people will live until the year 2012. Our priests and astrologers have proclaimed it.”

“Until 2012? How did you decide that?” Hannibal asked, curiosity getting the better of him.

“We could not pay our scribes to make a calendar that extended beyond 2012. After reviewing our coffers it was decided that there was not enough in the budget for that and tobacco. Unfotunate, perhaps, but we’ll probably all be dead from cancer before 2012 anyway.” The ambassador said, once more dismissive.

“It should be some comfort to you,” Hannibal replied, “That you will not die from cancer. At least, not all of you.”

The ambassador tilted his head. “Why is that, Hannibal?”

“Because many of you will die by fire and steel much sooner.” With that Hannibal gave the ambassador the Carthaginian declaration of war.

OMIA immediately crossed into Mayan lands and entered the lands around Copan. Two worker bands were caught in the open but slightly beyond the reach even of Old Man Iron. The Halach Uinic of Copan had dispatched the 2nd Mayan Pike and 30th Mayan Longbows from the city for some maneuvers while the 101st Mayan Javelins held the city. In the west the Jade Knights of Tikai, under the command of the Halach Uinic of Tikai were also observed by scout of OMIA.

Of immediate concern was the 6th Mayan Pikes guarding a band of settlers. These were under the nominal command of the Halach Uinic of Tikai at least until they could found a city of their own and be assigned their own general. That, of course, would never happen. The Knights of Flowers* fell upon the traveling band without warning, tearing apart the formation of pikes before they could form and taking the settlers as slaves – the Mayan01-02.

Thus far 1295AD had proved fruitful. Now was the time for the attack on Chalcedon. The 29th and 32nd Regiments of Comitatenses Spears had little time to dig in to the dry sand around the city. The heavy cavalry spread out around the city while the people panicked. The spearmen huddled in their trenches, not even bothering to form into phalanxes that would be easily flanked and thus destroyed. What little chances they had would be taken behind the frail earthworks hastily thrown up around the city. The Byzantine spears made a good accounting of themselves in the battle. The Dark Knights, Iron Lances and the Black Guard all took severe losses before the spears were overrun. Though ‘regulars’ they fought to the last man. The Courage of Byzantium would be added to the rolls of the Sparthaginian navy to honor them. In the meantime, the Byzantine05 slave force was created from the city survivors.

The final military move of 1295AD was the danger transfer at sea of Phaedo’s Pride and The Black Company from ICS Massacre of Bangalore G-03 to ICS Curse of the Black Hand C-01. The transfer was made without incident and the skillful sailors of the Sparthaginian fleet were given great credit, for the transfer allowed the horsemen of Carthage to make their way from the coast of the mainland to the ESC in 10 short years. All of the men and equipment were landed near Heraclea where they were joined by the Scourge of Amsterdam. All of the Byzantine objections would be taken by 1300AD, a startling blitzkrieg. Thereafter Hannibal would send his ambassadors to make peace with Theodora, taking as much as the cowards would give for peace.

The Year 1300AD was fateful. For some insane reason (or something he was smoking), Smoking Jaguar left one the Mayan’s most valuable cities open to attack. The Ajaw of Copan was striped of his strong defenders and while pikes, settlers, spears and knights streamed by OMIA, none stopped to assist the beleaguered city!
The bait was too tempting to pass. Old Man Iron ordered the attack. The 11th spears fell to the encircling knights without any harm to the command of the Old Man. Next were the frail 101st Javelins whom put up a much better fight but died nonetheless. Finally the 122nd Javelins were overrun and the city was captured along with 2 bands of spice miners.

1300ADMayanCopan.jpg

It was a horrible blow against the Mayans and a huge victory for Carthage! The city was put to the torch and 5 additional slave bands were formed, the Mayan 03-09.

The destruction of Copan changed the nature of the Mayan war. Already the damage to these weak people was done. The loss of such a major city would be devastating to the Mayans. OMAI would escort the slaves back to the front lines and hand them off to POP’s Rangers. Together they would assault and destroy Tikal before OMAI continued towards America.

The final assault against the Byzantine Northern Empire was also under way.

1300ADByzantineNorthernEmpire.jpg

The remnants of the Northern Empire consisted of Sardica in the east and Heraclea in the west. Calvary and knights were posted outside of both cities, preparing for the assault.

At Sardica the assault was left to three bands of cavalry – all elite units. The Knights of the Chalice, sober once more, the Knights of the White Mountain and the Dark Brotherhood. The elite knights of Cold Steel were close but could not provide assistance in the assault. Likewise Aabraxan’s Honor Guard were still resting and training replacements after the destruction of Trebizond. They could not support the attack.

Scouting at Sardica was sparse at the beginning of 1300AD. The local farmers readily gave the foraging Carthaginians knowledge of the area but all they could supply regarding military strength were rumors. If they could be believed, the heavy cavalry were facing the 3rd and 8th Regiments of Comitatenses Spear, handpicked units sent north from the homeland of Theodora with the command to seize and hold this area for the Byzantine empire. When the Knights of the Chalice drew near to the city the rumors were confirmed. The banners of the 3rd Regiment flew from the lead phalanx assembling outside the city. A support Regiment was also drawing up outside the city. The Knights, denied their liquor after the last debacle, were sent into the forming ranks.

Unfortunately the lack of drink also resulted in a lack of fortitude. The Knights failed in a flanking maneuver as the 8th rushed to the support of the 3rd Regiment and the Knights were pinched between the two units. The Knights crumbled and fled, less than one man in five escaping the trap. The Dark Brotherhood, seeing the engagement, circled to the east, exploiting a narrow defile between the city and the sea. The 3rd, still engaged in the battle with the Knights of the Chalice, were unable to turn enough men to be effective. The unit was overrun and the men began to flee through the ranks of the 8th Regiment and into the city causing mass panic.

The 8th Regiment had problems of its own. The commanding officer of the Knights of the White Mountain recognized that the destruction of the 3rd Regiment and even the defeat of the Chalice could be exploited. Many of the spears of the 8th were fouled on the dead bodies of the men of the Chalice and were hampered in their attempts to withdraw by the number of men running through their lines from the now non-existent 3rd Regiment. The Knights of the White Mountain used the confusion to circle the formation and attack the rear ranks of the 8th Regiment.

What followed was a slaughter but it was not as complete as the commanders had hoped. The hardened 8th put up a horrible struggle. The fleeing men of the 3rd Regiment regained some courage and joined the men of the 8th Regiment, an action that was quite surprising. Suddenly the Knights of the White Mountain were facing a reconstituted band of spearmen. In the end more than half of the Knights of the White Mountain were wounded or without mounts. The commanders of the 8th Regiment were captured alive as much as possible and sent back to Carthage as prisoners so that their command skills could be analyzed and, if possible, utilized by Carthage. The 8th Regiment was informally known to their comrades as the Red Devils. The city, of course, was burned to the ground.

As luck would have it, the destruction of Sardica revealed a band of stinking Sumerian settlers guarded by their barbaric Enkidu warriors. Looking to continue the exploits of the Byzantine war, the knights of Cold Steel were sent to support the leaning units in the area so that the war against Sumeria could begin on the right note.

News of the battle of Sardica was cause for celebration in Carthage. The Byzantine bid for an Empire had failed. All that was left was the destruction of Heraclea. The commanders outside of Heraclea had a different idea in regards to the attack. They had been able to scout the lands around the city and identify their enemies. The fragile regulars of the 39th and 27th Regiments of Comitatenses Spear faced them across the open plains. The Carthaginians had built their attack around a hardened center, the Black Company – a band of veteran knights. Added to this were the elite band the Scourge of Amsterdam and the Veteran band of Phaedo’s Pride – both companies of heavy cavalry.

Heraclea, though exposed to the front by desert and open grassland, was well fortified on its flanks by the ocean to the northwest and the hills to the southeast. The attack would, of necessity, be frontal. The green Phaedo’s Pride lead the attack against the phalanx of the 39th Regiment. The frontal attack was a route. The men of the Pride flung themselves upon the spears of the 39th but the men would not break. Only the cool heads of their commanders saved the company from complete disaster. A belated withdrawal left the company with less than 20% of this strength, the remainder were casualties, either dead or wounded, or without mounts. A great many horses had been lost in the attack. But the men had been bloodied now and they would do better next time.

Unable to leave the field to the Byzantines the Scourge of Amsterdam followed the attack, hitting the 27th Regiment while the lines were attempting to recover. The Scourge attacked and would not relent, driving the men of the 27th before them. There was nowhere to escape, however. The hills were to their backs. Only a handful of men managed to make it back to the city or flee into the hills. The supporting companies of the Scourge suffered heavy casualties, however, depleted to nearly 30% strength. It would take a long time for Carthage to recover from the offensive.

The final attack was for the Black Company. The only remaining opposition was the wounded men of the 39th Regiment, bravely clinging to spear, fortified in their phalanx. The Black Company suffered 50% casualties but the 39th was overrun. Without support or the possibility of escape, the city of Heraclea fell, it citizens enslaved into the Byzantine06.

The destruction of the city revealed a new threat, however. A band of Byzantine archers had be caught out of position in a nearby forest, scouting for enemy units. The 11th Regiments of Skirmishers were unable to support the city during the attack but they were in position to harass the wounded Carthaginian units. The commanders gave the order to retreat from their current gains and consolidate for healing. There now existed six Carthaginian companies on Sumeria’s western flank.

By the end of 1300AD Carthage’s supremacy had secured it against another civilization and potentially two. Of the remaining Civilizations, the Netherlands and Persians were client states, never to be anything more. India was on the rise again but would be tackled again soon. The Byzantines were subdued, as were the Hittites, though both would need to be sheered again. The Mayans had suffered a horrible (and somewhat amazing) loss early in the war, one of their most productive cities falling to Carthage. Spain, Portugal, France, and China were all too weak to threaten Carthage, at least for now. Sumeria was also on the list to be destroyed. France was advancing a settler and would need to brief declaration to clean that up.

The only true enemy remaining to Carthage was America. Hannibal knew that Carthage and America were heading towards a horrible conflict that would leave many dead on both sides.
