"I can/cannot run civ iv on my computer" thread

Working fine here at high graphics levels and 1280x800 resolution.

I have a Toshiba M45 laptop, Pentium 730 processor, 512MB RAM, and a Mobile Intel 915GM with 128MB video RAM (shared).

For some reason, the opening videos did not display at all. I only want to watch the movie once... waaahh. Maybe a reboot and restart will help that, but I'm going to go back to playing with the game for now. It's a very different interface, but I think I will get used to it quickly. Nicely done and very intuitive.

Cheaper to get a desktop, less likely for your parents to say no because of the cost...
I dont want to get a desktop because I hardly use the one I have now, and its nearly 5 years old.

2 Ghrz
1 gig RAM
GE Force MX420 Graphics card with 64MB memory

On startup, the game reported that I had an insufficient graphics card and might experience problems. The game ran fine for about two hours, then crashed back to desktop with no log files created in C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Logs Have restarted and it seems to be working OK again.

10/27 update - The game generally fails with that graphics card every 1 to 2 hours, and always when trying to run a Great Wonder video. The failures come in three types - crash to desktop, lockup and then crash to desktop, and hideous Blue Screen error with a memory addressing problem in nVidia graphics driver. The error happens on a random Great Wonder video, but once it happens you cannot reload the autosave game and try again; it will just crash at the same point. Howver, you can start another game and pass the very same Wonder video and all is well, but then you hang up on another video.

Oh well, I am due for a new video card anyway, so its no big deal.

AMD Athlon2.16GHz, overclocked to 2.7GHz
512MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600

The game runs at a near-steady 15-20fps, sometimes dipping to 10fps, particularly when a savegame is just loaded. It's much slower than I expected it to be, but I'm getting used to the speed. I attempted to turn down the graphics, but the results were the same, so I left it on High. ;)

I hope the first patch, aside from fixing the many problems listed in the Bug Reports section, greatly speeds up the game overall.

Game runs fine on my system....

Pentium D 2.8 GHz, 1 GB Ram, VisionTek XTASY x300 SE 256MB PCI-E card with ATI graphics/Hypermemory.

Bought the video card at Best Buy last night for $99.99, and I think they did have a PCI version availible. Not a bad deal for a 256MB PCI-E card.

is there any news of when/if the mac version is coming out?
I doubt I'l be able to play
my g4 lacks just a little bit in each requirment

i am only posting here to tell the community how relieved i am that
i do not have to post here.

my system:

2.7 gig amd CPU
6800 GT 256MB_RAM agp card
512MB sdram main memory.

all i can say is, it runs like a freaking DREAM.
absolute smooth sailing all the way.

just wonderful!

i do get ONE strange graphics glitch when i alt-tab
in and out sometimes, but it is not game breaking,
and is only a mild annoyance.

Eh, I take it back. No wonder movies, either.

The game seriously bogged down towards the end and finally crashed in the final screens to say who wins. Civ 2 and 3 bogged down too, but this is worse -- well, aside from the fact that you don't get stuck watching a unit move back and forth on a railroad 900 times before the AI is finished with it's turn. *whew*

It seems to be a memory leak, but it may be related to the crash and not any basic software flaw. Firefox and Windows does NOT take up 300-ish MB plus another 250-ish MB of paging file. Rebooted, memory cleared up.

Just for my curiosity : the game will run if I have a good video card ( with pixel shadowing and 128 Mo of memory ), but only ... 128/256 Mo of "normal" RAM memory ?

Thanx in advance

Nicole, I saw the same thing happened.. I had been playing for close to thirty minutes and the game started chugging along, I alt-tab out and notice the civ.exe in task manager is taking up like 400+MB... wow! Is this normal? I rebooted and seemed to work better for the last hour I played.

My system is not the best out there, but not too shabby either. AMD 2400, 128mb Geforce 2 Ti, 512 PC2700 memory.

Anyone else notice the memory leak issue?

You may have just made my day. So you have an Intel 915 like me and you're not getting the blackness/cheshire cat thing?

Hi,

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200, the game loads but everything is black.

Will post if I find a solution.

Yes, I have the same problem, but I can get only 15-20 minutes out of it before CIV4 hits 100% CPU. If I save and reload, it helps for a little while, but I get more playtime if I exit CIV4 and restart it.

What happened to the days when demos would actually be made available before a game is released ?

they could have at least made a non playable demo which gives us a good indication of how it would run.

AMD Duron 1300
384MB RAM
Radeon 9000

It runs! But just BARELY. Reduced to minimum quality of graphics and runs at like 17 fps but it's playable.

Dangerov. . . I did (Dell Inspiron lpatop P4 2.4 mgz 512 Ram 32 meg Radeon 7500 with T&L and the terrain is all black. Unplayable and disappointing.

Ok, My Dell Dimension 8400 has 1 GB of DDR2 Ram, 3.4 GHZ processor, etc.

My computer runs games like Rome: Total War and KOTOR, Pirates! etc.

My graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT, 256 MB.

So, my question is, does my GeForce 6800 GT have T&L etc. to run Civ 4? I just ordered my copy a few days ago, so I hope I can fix any potential issues before I get the game.

Can anyone give me a quick answer? Anyone else have Civ 4 with the Nvidia 6800 GT?

Yes, it's playable. Not perfect, but definately playable. I have the latest video card drivers and am using their version of DirectX.

I will trying reducing the graphics resolution to see if I get Wonder Movies, etc. But first, I have to spend another day at work and have plans this evening (gasp! a life!), so I probably won't get a chance to tinker with it until Friday.
