I cant build factories

I am into the moder age and have about 25 to 30 cities about half of them got factories built now I cant build factories in any more cities. I have Coal but I believe you didnt have to have it to build a factory. Anyone have any clue what is going on?

Have you checked to make sure your are not trying to build factories in cities that already have them? Just kidding.

You need iron to build factories.
right click- industrialization - in the science advisor.

Also note that you only need Iron to start producing your factory. If you lose your Iron resource while the factory is being built, it will finish. I once waged a quick war with the Germans, and captured an Iron producing city right beside his capitol. I knew I'd lose the city soon to culture anyway, so I started building factories in all my cities, then sued for peace and gave Germany her city back. I even got a tech and some gold out of the deal, since they were pretty happy about me giving them a city.

Are you mobilized for war? If you are, you can only build units, barracks, harbor and airport.
